Ag Fact: Right now there are no nationally recognized definitions for the terms “pasture-raised” or “grass fed;” which can make it hard to know if the food you buy spends all of its life on pasture, or is eventually sent to a confinement facility. The best way to ensure you are buying true pastureraised or grass-fed products is to get to know the farm – and farmer – you buy from.

Life at Fox Fire Farms is ever varied and always busy, but rarely hectic. Although a Farmer’s chores are never done, producing true free range, organic, food is good work that we truly enjoy. It’s fulfilling to create a kind, ethical environment for animals and to see them thriving on the pasture.
Fish, ski, stroll our walking trails, or just relax and enjoy your stay at Fox Fire Farms. The star-gazing is awesome and the farm is a soothing place to rest your spirit and reconnect with nature. Sample our exceptional cuisine during your stay. Taste test our products, dine on our fine meats and eggs, and have your favorites shipped home.
The foundation of our work is grass and soil management. Our animals spend their whole lives eating the nutritionally rich diet that nature provides, and we foster, in our lush pastures. Ruminants like cattle, sheep and goats are designed to live with grassland ecosystems so they are able to harvest their own diet in a well-managed pasture. Basically, we raise great grass and the animals do the rest, naturally.

come stay awhile at Fox Fire Farms Ag Fact: Farmers working large-scale confinement operations often suffer from dangerous respiratory conditions due to high levels of dust, ammonia, and carbon dioxide in the air. In contrast, farmers on grass farms are outside, breathing easy while they work alongside the animals in the open pasture. Like the stock they husband, pasture-based farmers suffer from less stress and less respiratory illness. Grass-fed farms are truly a haven for everyone on the farm.
From 1908, when it was built, until the 1930s the Lower Spring Creek schoolhouse was an important part of Parry family life. Grandmother Parry and her sister, Evelyn, attended school there as girls and Evelyn grew up to become a teacher there. Like most rural schools, Lower Creek Spring School was used for community meetings, celebrations and gatherings and was an important part of country life for all the residents in the area Today, the old one-room school house has been newly restored for tours and serves as a guest house for visitors. This quiet, secluded retreat has a complete kitchen stocked with Fox Fire Farm’s homegrown meats and eggs and all the usual ammenities.
One of the most important management techniques we employ at Fox Fire Farms is rotational grazing; which means we move our animals from pasture-to-pasture regularly, allowing the grass to recover. Since each species forages for a different diet in the pasture – and leaves a different fertilizer – the soil is continuously improved without requiring chemical additives. Over time, our grass management has improved the soil on the farm and we now grow a healthful “pasture salad” that nourishes our livestock and has increased the number of wild birds and animals on the farm. In turn, our livestock nourish us, physically and emotionally, and we are able to be confident that the food we are eating is the tastiest, safest, and most healthful nature has to offer.

Dining on Fox Fire Farm meats? May we suggest wines...
Fox Fire Farms tour: beef Ag Fact: Meat, eggs and dairy products raised on pasture grass are healthier for you. They contain higher levels of vitamins A, D, E and K and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They also have more of the cancer fighting agent conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs). In addition, pasture-based farms allow their animals to grow at a natural rate instead of using growth hormones to force weight gain.
The first animals to enter a pasture in the Fox Fire Farms grazing rotation are cattle. Unlike most cattle raised in the U.S. today, our cattle are never fed grain. Instead, they forage the pasture for grasses, legumes, and other plants they favor. Cattle eat a lot, so they are moved to another section of the farm after several days to avoid overgrazing. Grass-fed Mothers produce nutritionally rich milk and are able to suckle and rear their young in the pasture. It’s best for the calf and the first step in producing the savory cuts of meat our beef is known for.

Fox Fire Farms tour: wine and table grapes Ag Fact: Like wine, the flavor of grass-fed meat and dairy products offer unique flavors and characteristics dependent on the soil, landscape and climate where the animal was raised, and the expertise of the farmer. Meat is extraordinarily rich, succulent and tender; eggs have savory, firm, dark yokes. Your Grandparents probably remember food tasting this good from the days before factory farming, but if you’re new to grass-fed food; you’re in for a delightful surprise.
16
Since we use rotational grazing, we’re able to stay in close contact with our livestock and constantly monitor their health and well-being; which means we don’t have to rely on constant doses of low-level antibiotics to protect the health of our animals.
Grapes grown on conventional farms are heavily sprayed with chemicals, which are absorbed through the skin of the fruit and the root system of the vine. This chemical bath is devastating to the soil and surrounding environment. At Fox Fire Farms, we grow grapes like we grow everything else – without chemicals and with a passion for creating the highest quality products sustainably.
Organic grass fed and grass finished beef is healthier eating too. It’s higher in omega-3 acids, vitamin E, conjugated linoleic acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid.
Organic vineyards are particularly beautiful because they are home to an array of insects, bees, birds, and bats that exist in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship with the grapevines.

Fox Fire Farms tour: pork Ag Fact: Large-scale factory farms are notorious for polluting the environment because of the large amounts of manure that build up in surrounding area, overloading the soil with nutrients and fouling the ground water. Manure contaminants have been linked to algal blooms, massive fish-kills, and a variety of human diseases, some of which are deadly. On a grass-based farm manure is spread over a large area, providing fertilizer for pastures and helping to create a healthy “pasture salad.”
Farmers tend to be a thrifty bunch, loathe to waste anything “someone can get some good out of” and at Fox Fire Farms, we are no exception. Our 100% organic orchards produce beautiful apples – but we’re not currently in the apple business. So, we bought some pigs! Feeding our USDA certified organic apples to our pigs means we are able to offer one of the rarest and most sought-after flavors in the pork industry: apple fed pork.
Our young, hand-caught halibut are more expensive than what you find in a grocery store, because it takes the captain the same amount of energy to catch a 60 pound fish as it does to catch an older, 300 pound fish. But older fish are susceptible parasites and mercury accumulation. We’re just not willing to eat or sell that kind of fish. The captain takes great pride in the catch and is very concerned with quality.

Ag Fact: Pasture-based farming is one of the most important things human do for the welfare of wildlife. The lush farm environment attracts and fosters a wide range of birds and other wild animals. Grass farms are a refuge for many species that are being crowded out of their natural habitat as formerly wild areas are developed for human use. In return, wild species benefit the farm by controlling pests and increasing pollination. It’s a winwin relationship for everybody.

The exquisite, almost sweet, taste of this pasture raised, apple fed pork is something you have to experience to believe – but order right away because we’ve had a waiting list ever since we announced Fox Fire Farms is raising this pork.
Copper River one of the only sustainable fishery in the United States and Fox Fire Farms is proud to offer their Sushi grade and #1 grade fish. We buy from a small operation, the captain and his small crew, that carefully hand selects for us the 10% of the catch that is #1 quality. The fish is processed at sea, flash frozen within hours, which ensures it tastes and stays fresh. To remain a sustainable fishery, the Copper River has some of the strictest commercial fishing regulations in the country. It’s an honor to fish the Copper River commercially, because very few permits are issued each year, even though the Salmon are highly prized for their dark red meat - a result of the diet available only in the Copper River.

Does an apple a day keep the veterinarian away? Judging from the health of our pigs, we suspect so. Just as important, pork raised on an organic, chemical-free diet is healthful for people and an excellent source of protein as well as essential vitamins and minerals.

Fox Fire Farms tour: eggs Ag Fact: Did you know most eggs labeled “free range” come from chickens that never go outside? Eggs can be labeled free-range if there is a chicken door in the coop – even if the chickens never use it. The fact is, there are so many misconceptions – and so little oversight – about free range food, it’s difficult to know what you are getting unless you buy from a farm that raises all their animals on wellmanaged pastures.
8
Goats love an eclectic diet of flowers, herbs shrubs, grass and tree bark. They are fantastic for gobbling up weeds, which gives pasture grass grazed by goats an advantage over less desirable plants. Since our goats do such a good job of keeping invasive weeds at bay, we are spared the expense and danger of using chemical herbicides in Fox Fire Farms pastures.
Fox Fire Farms chickens are raised outdoors on a natural, soy-free, organic diet – which means lots of grass, leaves, seeds, and bugs - just like Nature intends. In the pasture, chickens also eat small rocks, which help them digest their food and provide them with important trace elements. We do not use any soy feed, because soy is harmful to the chicken’s reproductive systems, and can have damaging effects on the human body too.

Fox Fire Farms tour: goat Ag Fact: Large-scale factory farms force livestock to live in dark, crowded conditions where they may never be allowed to go outside, exercise, or practice their natural behaviors, and they cannot escape the stench of their own manure. Animals are fed processed foods made up mostly of grain and soy and “supplemented” with by-products animals should not ever eat. These conditions make stock much more susceptible to stress and disease. It’s no way for any creature to be forced to live.

Goat is a heart-friendly meat and absolutely delicious when raised on grass pastures. The flavor is often compared to lamb, but it is much sweeter and very tender. In fact, goat is the most consumed meat in the world and has less fat and cholesterol, and more iron, than beef, pork, or even skinless chicken. Goat is also a rich source of conjugated linoleic acid. If you’ve been searching for an earth-friendly, nutrientrich source of protein, try Fox Fire Farms organic goat. It’s especially good in Indian and Caribbean dishes.
Our flock moves over nearly 1,000 acres of pasture every 60 days, enriching the farm’s soil and controlling pests as they go. The coops are on wheels so we can move the chickens from pasture to pasture in the livestock rotation. Better than fences, our Great Pyrenees dogs guard Fox Fire Farms chickens from predators and keep them from straying too far. The dogs are raised from puppyhood alongside our flocks so they grow up dedicated to the health and welfare of our chickens.

Fox Fire Farms tour: lamb Ag Fact: Some farms raise their animals on grass and label their meat grass-fed or grass-finished, but use chemical fertilizers and pesticides on their pastures. Many of these artificial fertilizers contain acids, which raise the acidity of the soil, kill beneficial organisms that live in the ground, and ultimately interfere with plant growth. Worse, chemicals in the grass means chemicals in your food. To make sure you’re eating clean, healthy food, make sure you buy from an organic farm.

At 9 to 12 months of age, our lambs are processed at a certified USDA processing plant in Colorado.
Let’s be honest, a lot of lamb tastes distinctly gamey. And strong. But our lamb, raised on organic grass has a delicate, delicious taste that needs very little seasoning to create an elegant feast everyone will enjoy.
Grass-fed lamb has less fat and more protein than grain-fed lamb and is an excellent source of vitamin B-12, vitamin E, beta-carotene, niacin, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. Bet you didn’t know lamb was such a healthy choice… It’s the grass.
Like all our animals, Fox Fire Farms lambs are raised entirely on organic grass and never receive growth hormones, “preventative” antibiotics, or grain-based feed.

It’s best for the calf and the first step in producing the savory cuts of meat our beef is known for.

come stay awhile at Fox Fire Farms Ag Fact: Farmers working large-scale confinement operations often suffer from dangerous respiratory conditions due to high levels of dust, ammonia, and carbon dioxide in the air.
“We cannot thank you enough for your customer service. You have a customer for life and we will certainly tell everyone we know about your farm.” Jeff Dodge - Arizona

Fox Fire Farms tour: pastures
Ag Fact: Right now there are no nationally recognized definitions for the terms “pasture-raised” or “grass fed;” which can make it hard to know if the food you buy spends all of its life on pasture, or is eventually sent to a confinement facility. The best way to ensure you are buying true pastureraised or grass-fed products is to get to know the farm – and farmer – you buy from.
