Brief Title Form and writing Brief A collaborative brief with Joe and Yafet. Continuing on from the previous module in which we branded Form and writing and produced our first font. The brief is to continue to create fonts based on pre-determined themes, along with accompanying material such as font specimens and publications. This time we will focus our efforts on the creation of a more comprehensive typeface allowing for more experimentation in its development as well as with accompanying printed ephemera. We will also continue to look at the branding and focus more of our efforts onto the blog as a growing resource and log of our development. Background / Considerations We found out from the creation of the last font that it is much more of an undertaking than we had anticipated. We need to work on what we learnt on the last module and continue to build as a group. We need to take into account much more effectively, the idea of delegation, as this was something that we put aside last time. We also need to consider the web presence much more thoroughly as it forms the basis of what Form and writing is.
Mandatory Requirements Much more time to be spent on the development of a bespoke, comprehensive typeface and supporting printed material. The blog needs to be considered as a much more comprehensive element to this brief.
Deliverables Online resource – blog Comprehensive typeface(s) Type specimens - Publication - Posters

Brief Title Ben Harris Identity – Brief 2 Brief Create a bespoke and professional identity for Ben Harris (BPM Harris photography) This includes the creation of all that would be necessary for a photographer to operate professionally. As well as providing opportunities to promote his photography with both screen and print delivery. The identity should reflect the nature of Benʼs photography, with a grounding in landscape, but more currently leaning towards sports photography. In order to gain him potential work and have an identity that stands out. Background / Considerations Professional photography, just like graphic design, is a very competitive field. Creating an identity for Ben that stands out is important to him achieving his goals in industry. Ben is a diverse photographer currently working predominantly in sports photography because of his love for sport, despite a solid grounding in landscape and portraiture. It is important not to pigeon hole Ben as a sports photographer as he is eager to work across all areas of photography and does not want to narrow his potential clientele by branding himself a sports photographer. This means that his identity needs to portray a multi faceted practice, showing his strengths in all areas. Mandatory Requirements Needs to be a cohesive identity with strong and recognisable visuals that should allow Ben a solid platform for development as a professional photographer. Potential clients need something that will set him apart from others, as well as points of contact that are readily available.
Deliverables Logo Book / publication Stationary - Letterhead - Compliment slip - Business cards - Invoice Refreshed Web presence.

Brief Title Re-designing Music – Brief 4 Brief A collaborative brief with Charlotte Bourke. Re-design notoriously bad, album artwork and collateral using solely type to communicate the same meaning. Looking specifically at musical eras as a form of categorising the artworks and allowing for links to be made between the various records. Ideally the re-designs should take into account the original artworks intended message/meaning, if any, and simply create artwork that communicates more simply and efficiently. Background / Considerations Music is intrinsically linked with the design and trends of an era, and has played a huge part in shaping the design culture of the eras in which it exists. We should consider different and experimental formats, as well as those prominent from different eras, and how they can be used along with the re-designs. For example, whether a vinyl would be more fitting to a particular redesign etc. Consider how the use of solely type can affect artwork, and use this try and retain the same original intended meaning of the piece.
Mandatory Requirements Exploit the process of applying designs, specifically typographic designs, to a number of in order to communicate originally and effectively.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
SOUND BITES British Library Sounds presents over 50,000 recordings that cover a vast range of themes – from music, drama and literature, to oral history, wildlife and environmental sounds. Categories in the collection include: Accents and Dialects; Arts, Literature and Performance; Classical Music; Environment and Nature; Jazz and Popular Music; Oral History; Sound Recording History; World and Traditional Music; Sound Maps. We want you to focus on the Accents and Dialects category of the collection by going to the following link: http://sounds.bl.uk/information/public-collections Ensure that you select only the following categories under ‘Public Collections’ – • Number 4 BBC Voices and/or • Number 40 Survey of English Dialects As in countries around the world, the United Kingdom is made up of a rich tapestry of accents and dialects, from Buchan Doric to the Scouse of ‘The Boys from The Blackstuff’ (‘gie’s a job’) … from ‘Rab C Nesbitt’ to ‘Gavin and Stacey’ … from ‘Eastenders’ to ‘Emmerdale’. Accents are important – they characterise us as individuals and communities, reflect our urban and rural identities and, undoubtedly, act as a mark of social status – think of the Received Pronunciation that still defines Radio 4. An accent can be a transient thing, depending on where we move to and how our lives change. The Brief You are required to design a submission that investigates sound recordings selected from the British Library Sounds digital collections. This brief presents you with the opportunity to express the essence and spirit of your chosen sound recordings. You may wish to edit and select appropriate ‘sound
bites’ from these audio clips or use transcripts for your text matter. Consider the juxtaposition of your chosen recordings – do they have anything in common? Do they address similar issues/themes? Are they opposites? Or simply celebrate the emotions that are aroused by your chosen words. Consider the way that different accents may suggest particular fonts – some bolder, some softer, sharp, distressed, condensed, thin, fat, serif/sans serif etc. You decide – the possibilities are endless. Use whatever methods and media you consider appropriate to convey your solution effectively – as long as you express a solid idea, inform us and show us your typographic skills. Make sure that you incorporate typographically detailed text matter that expresses an information hierarchy. Remember that words and language are our collateral and that your submission should be essentially typographic. Target Market Educationalists, social historians, design professionals and a discerning public Submission Guidance/Requirements Your project submission should include sufficient appropriate material to show that you have addressed the brief comprehensively and clearly expressed your design and typographic skills. It must include: • • • • •
Strategy Research and design development! Specifications/Grid(s) Final outcomes Disc showing development and presentation images of your project

Brief Title Good News Paper – Brief 6 Brief Our society is full of awful stories and the vast majority of new covered is bad. We are bombarded with bad new through various new organisations and media groups, the phrase ʻNo new is good newsʼ is one that could be all too readily used in todayʼs new coverage. However there is such a thing as good new, it is just not readily available. Our job is to make it so, by creating a printed newspaper that outlines, much in the same way as any other paper, all that is good in the news around the world. Background / Considerations There is an abundance of online, mainly independent, news organisations that promote only good news on their websites. However none have a physical printed paper. Using these as a source of information we will explore the possibilities of the good news paper. Consider the audience in the delivery of the news, and also consider that this needs to be designed in a way that makes the stories interesting to read. It may involve a certain amount of going against what a lot of newspapers go for in their design.
Mandatory Requirements Create a printed publication with the core idea being ʻgood newsʼ. The publication should be innovative and eye catching to separate itself from the other newspapers and tabloids available. It should be evident that this is not your average, gloomy newspaper.

Brief Title Carriage Works Re-brand – Brief 7 Brief Refresh the branding / create an entirely new identity for the Carriage Works in Leeds. A venue for productions and various cultural and musical events. The identity created should be current and striking and should be an all-encompassing identity. Providing material for both professional and public contact. Like any other established cultural or theatre like venue, there is always something to design for, and changing timetables etc. The identity should have a system that will allow it to move forwards for updating programmes and event timetabling and also for the promotional material for up and coming shows. Background / Considerations Carriage Works is a fairly established cultural venue in Leeds. So the identity and collateral will have to reflect this, as well as provide the chance for the venue to grow. The current identity does not reflect the venue as a quality establishment for productions and events which I need to consider in the development of the identity and collateral.
Mandatory Requirements A professional and bespoke identity, which should reflect the carriage works more effectively than the current identity. It should take into account the surroundings and type of productions in order to create a fitting identity.
Deliverables Identity Stationary – Letterheads, business cards, compliment slip, pencils, pens, Programme Event promotion – Poster, flyers, tickets.

Brief Title Form Follows Function – Brief 8 Brief Create a publication looking at modernist design culture based around the ideas and principles of ʻFunction over formʼ. This was a very prominent factor in the development and overall aesthetic of modernist graphic design, where visuals are a direct result of the job that the product is to perform. Create a comprehensive design culture publication, with identity and accompanying promotional material. Background / Considerations Consider all areas of design within the publication, from architecture, product design and graphic design. This will allow for much more in-depth research into modernist design ideas, as well as a more rounded publication overall, having considered modernism from all angles. Would be beneficial to consider the time periods and positioning internationally of where certain ideas may have spawned.
Mandatory Requirements Content should come from a body of informed research allowing for experimentation with ideas from modernism within the design of the publication itself.
Deliverables Identity Publication Accompanying collateral - Web presence - Posters - Prints - Launch material

UNSUNG HEROES AND HEROINES ‘The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.’ Benjamin Disraeli on heroes and heroism
‘There are two kinds of heroes. Heroes who shine in the face of great adversity, who perform an amazing feat in a difficult situation. And heroes who live among us, who do their work unceremoniously, unnoticed by many of us, but who make a difference in the lives of others.’ Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono President of Indonesia
‘I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs.’
The Brief Create an informative typographic experience that brings your chosen ‘Unsung Heroes and Heroines’ to life in a submission supported by high quality research and intellectual rigour.

Target Market Define your market, and how you will target it, in your Strategy.
Introduction Media produce constant articles and programmes on the rich and famous – tracing their life stories and celebrating their achievements. But what about ordinary people whose lives go unwritten – your gran’ or grandfather who lived through a war … the old immigrant gentleman who came as a young man to be a doctor … the group of friends who have travelled abroad to build homes for the poor … the charity workers who save lives in disaster zones … or perhaps the woman who beat breast cancer despite the odds… . People such as these continue to achieve great success with little or no recognition.
Submission Guidance/Requirements Your project submission should include sufficient appropriate material to show that you have addressed the brief comprehensively and clearly expressed your design and typographic skills. It must include:
Let’s look for fresh and effective ways to celebrate these often un-recognised heroes and heroines.
