You may be confused as to which way to go, I will try to clarify the difference between IP cameras or Network cameras and Analog cameras. Both work the same way as they use a sensor to convert the light into a signal much the way the retina in your eye works but that's where it ends. Analog cameras display video like a TV in TV Lines, the more TV lines the clearer the image, our systems use 540TVL and greater, most inexpensive system you may see at the box stores are 380 to 420 TVL. IP cmaeras convert the signal to data, there is a small computer in an IP camera. Standard resolution is 640 x 480 pixels, we only sell Mega Pixel IP cameras where the resolution is 1280 x 1024 pixels, the clarity is amazing, the image is so dense that you can zoom into the image after it has been recorded. IP systems are more complex, they run on a computer network (LAN) and the images are recorded on a computer called an NVR, most of the time they are Windows based PCs. These PCs use specialized disks designed for surveillance, when you have 10 cameras streaming images of 1280 x 1024 at 7 frames a second you have a lot of traffic to deal with, the disk is constantly running and needs to be a heavy duty drive. In most of our restaurant applications analog works perfectly and keeps costs down. Analog uses an appliance called a DVR to record the images, it is simple and requires no user intervention for the most part. Restaurant operators have enough systems to deal with, adding another complex one can be difficult for the operator. We use Mega Pixel in high volume restaurants that require that clarity, especially exterior is needed. One of our clients uses carhops on skates, the food service is all outside, they need this clarity. A Mega Pixel system is roughly twice the cost of our analog systems. Analog Pros: 1. Cost, analog systems are half the cost of a megapixel IP system 2. Compatibility, most cameras and DVR's work well together 3. Variety, there are many styles of analog cameras from box type with interchangable lenses, InfraRed for night time, domes and cubes - all of various quality and resolution. We use high quality 540+ TVL cameras mostly with adjustable Vari Focal lenses. Analog Cons: 1. They don't have many features that IP / Megapixel cameras have such as digital zoom and a
wide range of video settings. 2. Difficult and expensive to use them in a wireless environment. 3. Good clarity but not that of a MegaPixel camera. IP Pros: 1. the images are data and can be routed on a network may it be woreless or wired with Cat5 cable. 2. Image density allows for digital zoom, the clarity is amazing 3. Flexibility IP Cons: 1. Expensive, requires a PC and NVR software, a computer network just for the cameras. 2. More complex to operate and maintain 3. High Bandwidth usage, streaming 10 cameras at 7 frames a second generate a tremendous amount of data 4. Compatibility, some cameras may work with one brand of software but not another. Requires more design considerations. We also have the option of designing a hybrid system using both IP and analog.
