Do-It-Yourself (DIY) or Professional (PRO)? DIY systems are designed for consumers who want a quick and easy surveillance solution. These systems do still have advanced features such as night vision and motion detection, but are easy to install and understand. Most cameras use CMOS image sensors, which allow for a smaller camera and use less power than more advanced CCD sensors. For situations where a higher level of security is required, a more advanced PRO system may be necessary. PRO systems often have more night vision capability and larger cameras made with heavy-duty metal housings making them ideal for businesses in higher crime areas. These cameras usually use a CCD image sensor that provides higher quality video footage than does CMOS and aids in the identification of suspects caught on camera. They may also have picture correction and enhancement features. Other advanced features include built-in heater, wipers for cameras exposed to weather, and pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) capabilities. Indoor or Outdoor Cameras? Indoor cameras are, in general, not as expensive as outdoor cameras as they are not weatherproof. These cameras are ideal for baby and child monitoring, indoor, and covert surveillance. Outdoor cameras can be placed either indoors or outdoors. It's important to buy one outdoor camera even if you only plan to use it outside some of the time. This protects the circuit against the weather elements. These cameras are ideal for the monitoring of your property including your driveway, pool, and entrances to your home or business. You can also monitor sites around your business like parking lots, areas subject to vandalism, and entrance ways. Black & White or Color? Black and White, or monochrome, cameras offer home and business surveillance at a lower price. Additionally, they make the best image in low-light settings such as restaurants and outdoor nighttime surveillance. However, retail stores should have at least one color camera on the grounds to monitor areas where money transactions take place, safes, and other sensitive locations as they are ideal for positive identification of suspect (color of clothes, hair, etc) and offer a better image in well-lit areas. Wired or Wireless? Wireless systems offer more freedom and flexibility when installing your security system and are ideal for video monitoring of babies. They are easy to install and provide portability since you can
monitor from anywhere within range without wires. Most wireless systems use the 2.4GHz or the 900MHz frequencies, which pass through walls and offer a superior range. Wireless cameras are useful in business settings because of their portability. If you suspect theft in an uncontrolled environment, you can move the camera to that location without having to run wires. Wired systems generally cost less than wireless systems and are recommended for commercial applications where 24 hour surveillance is necessary. Since they're not affected by radio signals, they provide clear and consistent video footage. Additionally, wired systems are recommended if you plan to record for long periods of time. Live Feed or Recording? Deciding on having a live feed or recording of your footage, as with anything, depends on the application. For child or patient monitoring, recording may not be necessary. Live feed, however, is important in this application as it allows you to respond quickly to a situation. Many systems have alerts and display camera feeds on a monitor when motion or sound is detected allowing you to respond quickly should the need arise. For business surveillance, recording your footage is highly recommended. Many security systems come equipped with video output connectors that allow you to connect to a VCR for recording. However, a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is a much more efficient recording device. DVRs capture video from multiple cameras simultaneously and digitally record and store the footage as files on a hard drive or in flash memory. This gives you the ability to easily search and playback the recorded images by time and date. Depending on the size of the hard drive and how many cameras you are recording, DVRs offer days to weeks of continuous recording. You can also put them in motion detection mode (if supported), which saves disk space and records only relevant footage. Some DVR systems support internet access allowing you to view your footage live in realtime from any internet connected computer or smart phone from anywhere in the world!
