The number one item on your list for keeping your car looking good is to keep the exterior clean. Your car is going to attract dirt and grit, dust and grime just sitting in the driveway. Dirt and such will scratch the paint on your car if you try to wipe it off with a cloth. Invest in the Original California Car Duster or some other equal. This duster lift's the dirt off the car and doesn't drag it along the paint. It doesn't require a spray or any other cleaning application to remove dirt and dust. I know a few car care fanatics that dust their car on a daily basis, weather permitting. Washing your car is the next car care step. Use a mild soap such as dish detergent or bubble bath. Neither will scratch the paint and it will get out most anything that befalls your car's exterior. Use a soft brush or cloth for washing. If you find bug splattering difficult to remove, consider using a product such as a bug juice remover. "Simple Green" mixed with water in a 1 to 1 ratio is very effective in removing bug remains from the windshield and body of the car. Spray it on and leave for a few minutes before rinsing it off with clear water. There are other bug removers on the market but if you know a motorcyclists, ask them what they use to wash the windshield of their motorcycle or the face shield of their helmet. Choose a brush that has soft and pliable bristles is sturdy and holds a lot of water. The bristles should easily release dirt into the water rather than rubbing it into the paint surface. After you have given your beauty a bath, there are several ways to dry your car. One way is to use a leaf blower or air hose. This method makes the water evaporate so there is no wiping involved and no chance to scratch the paint surface. This method also obliterates the water drops that hide around the lights, mirrors and such. Or you can wipe the car down with a micro fiber towel. They will not scratch the paint surface but you may not be able to get into the little nooks and crannies where water droplets may hide. Once your car has been washed and dried, it is now time for the polish and wax. The polish is what will make your vehicle shine and sparkle like Elizabeth Taylor's best diamond. The wax will protect the shine from the environment. The polish is applied before the wax. Abrasive free polish is preferred. Polish will fill in light scratches or abrasions. Make sure the car is dry and cool to the touch. If it is a nice sunny day, polish and wax your car in a shady area if possible. For best results follow the manufacturer's directions when applying the product. The second step is to apply the wax. Wax can be applied by hand or mechanically. Let the wax dry then buff. The wax protects the paint and the shine of your vehicle. If you do these things on a regular basis, you car will always look show room new.
