Before storing your vehicle it is a good idea to hand wash it to remove any deposits or fallout. Whilst doing this, you'll get a very good idea of the condition of the bodywork. It gives you the chance to make a note of any scuffs, scratches or blemishes which you may not have noticed before. Wheels These can be washed with car shampoo and then rinsed off. However if there are a lot of black deposits on the wheels, this is most likely to be baked on brake dust. This will need to be pre soaked with an alloy wheel cleaner and agitated with a brush and then rinsed off straight away. After going to all this trouble it's generally a good idea to wax your wheels. This prevents any dirt and brake dust bonding to the surface of the wheel, enabling it to be washed off much easier next time you wash your wheels with only soapy water. Bodywork - Two bucket technique This is a very simple and effective eight step method to reduce scratching your car whist washing it. Recognised by the trade as 'best practice' but not known by many. As the name suggests you'll need two good-sized buckets. Rinse the car from top to bottom (all body work, bumpers and glass). This will allow any lose dirt to be rinsed off the car to reduce the risk of scratching. Place a small amount of a good quality car shampoo into one of the buckets and fill both with warm or cold water. Don't be tempted to use washing up liquid as these have a high salt content which will strip all the wax from the paintwork leaving it unprotected and more likely to deteriorate. Use a microfiber or lambswool wash-mitt instead of a sponge. Mitts have a deep pile enabling any grit to be drawn away from the paintwork. A sponge typically traps the grit between the paintwork and sponge causing scratching. Soak the wash-mitt in the soapy water bucket. Start at the top of the car and wash each area in sections, moving the mitt over the panel in parallel lines, not circles. (This will help in not putting 'swirls' in the paintwork). Rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket after each section, rinse any grit from it, squeeze and then replenish with suds from the soapy bucket. This allows each section of the car to become as clean as the first, instead of smearing dirt over the car. The sequence in which Windrush Car Storage prefer to wash each section of a car is as follows: roof, bonnet, glass, upper doors, front bumper, lower section of the doors, sills and rear bumper last.
It is a good idea to use a separate mitt or sponge to wash the lower part of the doors, bumpers and sills so that you don't contaminate your 'good' mitt with a lot of grit. Rinse the car with a hose starting at the top working down the car in a uniform, methodical manner. You should now have a sparkling clean car!
