The concept behind wireless cameras is indeed very good but in reality there are several factors that can make their use a little problematic. Many wireless cameras transmit on 2.4 GHz and this frequency is highly used by other technologies this means that sometimes your wireless camera signal can suffer from interference from other products in the vicinity. For example, wireless networking also uses the 2.4 GHz frequency range, it's not unusual for wireless cameras that are operating in the same environment as a wireless network to suffer some form of wireless interference. It's also possible for the wireless network to be affected by the wireless camera. If your requirement is for a single wireless camera the chances are you will find some space in the 2.4 GHz frequency range, where the camera can operate without interference. However, it's not unusual for people to have a requirement for several wireless cameras in the same vicinity, when this is the case there is a good chance that one or more of your cameras will suffer some wireless interference. That said, there are situations where the use of a wireless camera can be invaluable this is especially the case when there is no physical way to lay cable between the camera and where you wish to monitor or record the incoming footage. An example of this might be where there is a road between two buildings and the only way to receive a video signal from one building to another without using a wireless camera, would be to dig a trench across the road between the two buildings. This would probably involve council approval and probably make the installation cost prohibitive. Wireless cameras are also very useful in covert situations the lack of any wires makes hiding the camera far easier. Some wireless cameras are now so small they can be hidden, together with their power supply, in a space no bigger than a matchbox. Some wireless cameras can now be found fabricated into everyday items such as alarm clocks, pens, tissue boxes etc. This means set up can be carried out on the fly, so when you're involved in an installation where time is of the essence the camera can be put in place in no time at all, this is known as rapid deployment CCTV.
