COMPANY OVERVIEW
Innovative Minds…Exceptional Quality Innovation and quality… Although the BH Electronics story began in 1967, we are a company pointed toward the future. Our advanced products and capabilities meet the growing demand for High Frequency Magnetics. BH has developed a series of standard and custom products - ranging from 20 KHz to 1 GHz - that meet the needs of many of the world’s leading high-tech companies. Our engineering expertise, manufacturing capabilities and quality performance make BH Electronics a leader in the field of High Frequency Magnetics. BH Electronics was named after the BH magnetization or hysteresis curve. The BH curve shows the relationship between flux density (B) and flux intensity (H). The curves help to quantify the basic properties of ferromagnetic materials. The permeability of a magnetic material is the ratio of B to H. Understanding the BH Curve is critical in the design of transformers, inductors and other electronic components.
Engineering – Your magnetics experts BH Electronics has a solid technical understanding of High Frequency Magnetics. Our design engineers are experts in designing magnetic components and have a broad based understanding of end-use applications. BH participates in industry standards committees and we can assist in designing to meet agency approval requirements. Our engineering and technical staff routinely: • Consults with customers in defining specifications • Designs complete devices from electrical and mechanical specifications • Develops package configurations • Recommends modifications or design alternatives based on manufacturability, enhanced performance, cost-effectiveness and product availability

Variations: QTR-PakTM, 8th-PakTM and Mini-PakTM
Common Threads: SMT; Space Efficiency; Reliability Turns ratio of 1 to whatever Standard Pak families are 1:1 transformers / dual inductors but there is no reason this ratio could not be incrementally varied to meet your specific need - quickly and efficiently. Whether you need a variation on the standard 1:1 ratio for a SEPIC dual inductor or flyback transformer, we can do that for you - quickly and efficiently. If your 1:1 application could benefit from lower DCR on one side of the circuit than the other - we can do that as well.
MIL-PRF-27F, for Level M, Grade 5, Class S
Contact BH regarding your specific requirement.
Many standard PakTM inductors and their variations have been modified on a custom part number basis to meet the following specifications:
Flyback Transformers; Different Cores?
Life tests performed for 1,000 hours at 130˚ C. Thermal shock, mechanical shock and vibration. Vibration tests that include a 20G peak varied logarithmically between 10-2,000Hz, scanned in + X, Y and Z directions at 20 minutes per frequency cycle for a total of approximately 12 hours. QTR-Paks and 8th-Paks have completed tests. Mini-Paks are in process but not yet approved for MIL-PFR-27. Such tests are possible only because of the SMT structure that is sound in its design: Reliable.
Contact BH and talk with one of our engineers.
Current Sense Transformers? See the Current Sense transformers section of this catalog. Magnetics put into Pak SMT structures provide space efficiency as well as reliability. Contact BH for a N/C sample.
Contact BH with your requirement.
100 a year or 100,000 a Month?
Up to 4,000V isolation
BH Electronics has the multiple capabilities of small or large volume manufacture.
Perhaps you have an application that needs the inductance of one from the standard Pak list of specifications but needs a higher isolation voltage. We can do that. Contact BH Electronics.
18
Would your application benefit from a different core such as Kool-MU® or other?
Whether “custom” or standard, BH is able to quickly respond to your requirement. If SMT size, performance and reliability are critical to your application - large or small. Check us out.

Product Selection Choosing the transformer
Finding the right transformer for any particular application doesn't need to be a matter of trial and error. Using basic application concepts can reduce the field of options to a few likely items. The main thing to keep in mind is that the transformer should be chosen based upon its published parameters without regard to its original design application. Often a part described as a network isolation transformer, for example, can be used in an unrelated application such as a MOSFET driver circuit. The first step is to determine the isolation voltage and turns ratio of the transformer required. Isolation voltage is published as hi-pot test voltage. This is a short term high voltage test. If a continuous winding-to-winding or winding-to-core isolation over 600 volts RMS is required we suggest contacting BH engineering for assistance. Transformer size is determined by the ET constant. This is the maximum amount of energy over time that will pass through the transformer without saturating the core. It is sometimes called the "volt-microsecond product" or volt-microsecond constant. It is the product of the pulse amplitude in volts, multiplied by the duration of the longest expected pulse width in microseconds. The following examples illustrate this concept: t
The next step is to characterize the shape of the waveform as it passes through the transformer. The result of this process is a compromise between three different transformer parameters. The leading edge of the pulse, the top of the pulse and the trailing edge of the pulse each require different performance characteristics. The rising pulse is controlled mainly by leakage inductance (LL) of the component. Higher leakage inductance indicates slower rise time. Distributed capacitance and resistance also affect rise time in some circuits, but for purposes of selecting a small range of products from a catalog, we suggest using the leakage inductance specifications. The top of the pulse is effected primarily by the open circuit inductance (OCL) of the transformer. Higher OCL values will result in less droop. The slope of the trailing edge of the pulse is effected by the total capacitance as seen by the primary. Lower load capacitance will result in shorter pulse decay times. Backswing is a function of the magnetizing current. Larger and/or less efficient transformers will have more backswing. To limit backswing and internal capacitance it is suggested that the designer avoid transformers substantially larger than the application requires.

RL should be selected at the load ip impedance into which the transformer will work in actual operation. R1 and R2 should be selected so that the pulse generator sees an impedance approximately equal to its internal impedance and so that the OSCILLOSCOPE transformer input sees an impedance equal to RL times the turns ratio squared. The oscilloscope should have at least a 50 MHz capability. Figure 2. Pulse transformer dynamic parameter measurement circuit.

Application Notes The pulse duration and pulse amplitude can be measured by opening the primary current lead to the current probe and reconnecting it so that the primary current does not flow through the current probe. The voltage applied to the primary can be measured by placing an oscilloscope voltage probe across the transformer primary. If the pulse duration is gradually

The operation of the circuit of Figure 2 depends upon the balancing of the opposing primary and secondary currents flowing through the current probe. For 1:1 turns ratio transformers, this is accomplished automatically. For transformer turns ratios other than 1:1, it is necessary to wind the same ratio of turns on the current probe as the transformer ratio in order to have the primary current balanced by the secondary current.

SECONDARY CURRENT MIRROR IMAGE OF PRIMARY CURRENT
Figure 3. Primary and secondary current waveforms as seen by the current probe in the circuit of Figure 2. When the primary and secondary ampere-turns are balanced, the two currents have the shape shown in Figure 3. For comparison purposes, the mirror image of the primary current is shown in dashed lines. Also shown as a dotted line in Figure 3 is the difference current between the primary and secondary currents. This difference current waveform appears on the oscilloscope face. This difference current waveform is redrawn in Figure 4 with the dynamic parameters of the transformer noted. The derivation of the parameters indicated can be seen by studying Figure 3 and remembering that these dynamic parameters are a measure of how much the transformer degrades a pulse. If the pulse were not changed by the transformer, the output pulse would be the same as the input pulse and the difference current waveform would be a straight horizontal line. If the polarity of the windings is incorrect, the primary and secondary currents will add instead of cancel each other DROOP CURRENT AMPLITUDE I

increased, the core will eventually saturate. At saturation, the output voltage decreases and the droop characteristic as measured by the circuit of Figure 2 looks like that shown in Figure 6. The transformer volt-microsecond product is the voltage applied multiplied by the time to saturate as shown in Figure 6.

TIME TO SATURATE
Figure 6. Difference current waveform when core is saturated. When a pulse transformer is inserted into a circuit, the transformer degrades any pulse which passes through it. The dynamic parameters of a pulse transformer are defined by the ways in which a "perfect" pulse is degraded. For example, the rise time of a pulse transformer is defined as the rise time of an output pulse when a zero rise time pulse is applied to the input. With this concept in mind, refer to Figure 7 which is the typical output pulse of a pulse transformer when a perfect no rise or fall time, flat top, no over or undershoot pulse is applied to the input.

Application Notes open circuit inductance
Open circuit inductance of a winding is measured across the winding with all other windings open circuited. The measurement must be made with a drive low enough to keep the core in the initial permeability region and at a frequency one tenth or less than the coil self resonant frequency. Check to see that the drive is not too high by varying drive level. If the LOC reading varies with drive level the drive is too high. A measurement frequency below 150 KHz is usually satisfactory.
amount of voltage for a long time. If only unidirectional pulses are applied, the flux density can only move between the saturation level and the residual level and the device will support a relatively small volt-microsecond product.
leakage inductance
Leakage inductance is measured most easily with a HP 4192A meter connected across the winding to be measured with another winding short-circuited with as short a path as possible.
COUPLING CAPACITance
Suitable instruments for measuring open circuit inductance are following: Tektronix, Model 130 LC meter; HewlettPackard 4192A impedance analyzer; ESI, Model 250-DA impedance bridge; Wayne – Kerr.
Coupling capacitance is read easily with a HP 4192A meter connected between the two windings of interest with both windings short-circuited. Use short leads to avoid errors in measurement due to capacitance between leads.
exciting current
Distributed CAPACITance
A certain amount of coercive force is required before a flux change is generated in a core. This amount of coercive force is called excitation. For a given number of turns on a core, a certain current is required to produce the excitation. This current is called exciting current and is represented by the symbol/ex . This exciting current must be satisfied before the transformer can do any work so that no output is obtained until more than the exciting current is supplied to the primary.
volt-microsecond product
The flux density level in a transformer core is directly proportional to the product of the voltage applied to a winding and the time that this voltage is applied. When the flux density reaches the saturation level, the inductance decreases rapidly to a low value. If pulses of opposite polarity are alternately applied to a transformer, the flux density can swing from the positive saturation level to the negative saturation level and the device will support a relatively large
Distributed capacitance is measured with a Hewlett-Packard 4192A. The Q is low at the self resonant frequency in some transformers making this measurement difficult or impossible to perform. A Network Analyzer may also be used to make this measurement.
winding resistance
Winding resistance is measured with a resistance bridge such as the Fluke 88424A. Care should be taken to avoid reading errors caused by heating of the wire of the winding during the measurement.
natural resonant frequency
Natural resonant frequency can be measured with the Hewlett-Packard 4192A but the same difficulties previously mentioned may be encountered.
insulation resistance The insulation resistance between windings is measured with a dc megohmeter.
Specification Be cautious when specifying materials or construction methods to prevent:
actual circuit performance and since they can be measured accurately and quickly.
• unnecessary engineering time to perform the design effort without the aid of special pulse transformer measuring equipment
Normally it is not adequate to only specify dynamic parameters as factors such as average current rating, insulation resistance and coupling capacity are also important.
• making the buyer rather than the seller responsible for transformer performance, and • higher cost for the transformers. BH engineers are current with all of the latest advances to increase performance at lower cost and in smaller packages. A specification which attempts to tie down a transformer's performance in two different ways is redundant. For example, if rise time is specified, leakage inductance and distributed capacity normally need not be. If droop is specified, open circuit inductance need not be. A redundant specification frequently leads to nuisance rejections during receiving inspection because the transformer satisfies a given requirement in one way but not in another way specified. In most instances, it is probably best to specify the requirements for a pulse transformer primarily in terms of its dynamic parameters since these parameters control
36
Where possible, always specify minimum or maximum values for parameters instead of a range as this may reduce cost by eliminating operations from the manufacturing process. Always specify the measurement circuit, method and equipment to be used to minimize any correlation difficulties. BH Electronics will provide correlation samples with readings for checking purposes. Consider the application for the transformer before deciding which parameters to specify. Avoid requiring parameters that are unnecessary for the application. For example, in applications such as common mode chokes and interstage transformers, the required volt-microsecond product is normally so small that the value need not be specified.
