Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server Exchange 2003 is the aspirant for centralization and consolidation of all these messaging platforms nationally. This document analyzes the existing messaging infrastructure and describes the hardware requirements for the archive solution from Quest Software that will be deployed, in order to successfully have an archiving messaging solution for the existing messaging environment. Iteam has been invited to participate in COMPANY_X formal health check procedures. This document also describes iteam’s approach in conducting this activity with its Exchange Reporting Tool (MessageStats). The document also provides guidelines and narrative to indicate how iteam along with Quest Software can assist COMPANY_X given its specific challenges.

Server Volume and Traffic Flow Understanding and capturing overall server volumes and trends in usage can help COMPANY_X improve its Exchange operation. These reports provide diagnostic information on average server loads and trending data to anticipate peaks before problems happen. They also provide valuable message flow information required for system design and tuning. Using this base information can also assist in other messaging initiatives including capacity and archiving planning.
serverX
The above graph shows at a high level the number of sent/received messages and the average size of each. This information is very useful in determining at a high level the number of messages flowing through your Exchange environment as well as the volume of messages being sent and received.
The Server Summary report presents the physical messages a server handles, and compares the mailboxgenerated activity with system-generated activity. Report architects and administrators can determine the percentage of time consumed by user activity compared to the percentage of time used for system overhead work. The comparison can then be used to balance services throughout the Exchange organization.
p6
Exchange Capacity Summary The Exchange Capacity Executive Summary report provides composite information about the components of an Exchange environment that impacts storage, including mailbox metrics and quota metrics. An overview of system capacity is critical to ensuring service level expectations are met. Exchange Storage

Local Message Delivery In addition to understanding overall message flow, it is useful to determine which messages are delivered to local mail recipients vs. external mail recipients. MessageStats provides detailed information around the number and volume of messages that remain on a specific server or are delivered to mailboxes on a separate Exchange Server. The Server Internal vs. External report presents Exchange server activity from a server perspective. It details the effects the mailbox activity has on the server and allows administrators to determine the number of mail messages created and received by each mailbox on a particular server. The reports break down the server activity into quantity and volume of internal traffic, and quantity and volume of external traffic.
The collected data reveals that SERVERX sent 3 pieces of mail at a total of 0MB of data to internal recipients during our collection dates. It also reveals that the majority of processing on this Exchange server is to external mailboxes since 431 messages were sent external to this server.
We can also see that SERVERX was responsible for receiving and delivering 558 pieces of email at a total of 82MB from external sources. p9
Mailbox Resources and User Traffic Due to the rising costs of supporting messaging in messaging environments, most companies have a stated mailbox limit of 50 MB and the use of email for business purposes only. MessageStats can collect and analyze each of the resource users of your messaging system. Usage patterns include heaviest users, largest mailboxes and external Internet domains that send or receive the most traffic. Many organizations have used this information as an information base to support cost allocation for messaging resource use.
Mailbox Quotas provides a list of mailbox quotas across an entire Exchange organization. The information in this report comes directly from Exchange mailbox statistics. It is not gathered through the tracking logs of MessageStats.
Looking at a graphical representation of the observed data, one can see the top 10 mailbox sizes. In addition to mailbox size MessageStats also gathers the number of messages stored.
p 10
Message Size In order to better estimate the appropriate use of bandwidth Exchange needs and currently uses it is important to know the size of individual messages flowing through your Exchange environment. Armed with this information, Exchange Administrator can better define Exchange 2003 routing groups, estimated delivery times, and the needed bandwidth between new and existing Exchange Sites.
p 11
Distribution of Message Sizes The Sent Distribution report provides a breakdown of the distribution of message sizes sent by Exchange Mailboxes and summarizes this information at the Mailbox level. This report answers the question, ''On average, what size messages do my users send?'' Sent Distribution of Message Sizes Organization: COMPANY_X
