Director’s note City Increases Access to Services and Information for Citizens With the leadership and support of Reno City Council, City staff has implemented several programs, services, initiatives and projects to assist in the City of Reno citizen’s improved access to City Services. The goals have been to provide improved, timely and accurate information on the City’s website, relocation of all City services to City Hall to consolidate service delivery, and development of city financial information in easy to understand formats. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has been part of this effort by relocating its primary Administration and Customer Services operation to City Hall, at 1 East First Street, on the 11th Floor. In addition, the Department maintains three other “portals of service” that provide services such as recreation program registration, response to general questions about the City’s park system and information regarding the Department’s activities. These sites are located at existing community or recreation centers in geographic locations that cover the four sections of the Reno community. They include: Central: City Hall - 1 East First Street Northeast: Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center - 1301 Valley Road West: McKinley Arts and Culture Center - 925 Riverside Drive South: Neil Road Recreation Center - 3925 Neil Road In addition, if citizens wish to track specific city related topics, they can sign up for the City’s Reno Connect program. Reno Connect is a free subscription notification service that allows citizens to receive automatic information alerts via e-mail, telephone, cell phone and/or fax on a variety of topics. To sign up, visit www.reno.gov. So, however you wish to be informed, advised, involved or included in City activities, information, or to learn about Parks, Recreation and Community Services programs, you have lots of options. Feel free to contact us at www.reno.gov/parksandrec or at 334-2260.

URBAN FORESTRY

Our urban forest encompasses trees and vegetation on both public and private property within the city limits. A dedicated staff of Arborists and a professional Urban Forester maintain over 24,000 publicly owned trees in city parks and along public streets. Their work is vital to both public safety and tree preservation. Reno’s Arborists are concerned about trees that appear to be dead, dying, or diseased, that have large broken limbs, low limbs, or limbs blocking traffic signs, signals or intersection sight lines. To report concerns about trees causing a public hazard call Reno Direct at 334-INFO. For Information about all programs Call the Park Office at 334-2270 Firewood Sales Reno Urban Forestry sells firewood to the general public. The wood yard located at 190 Telegraph is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for wood cutting. The wood is in log form and requires people to saw their own rounds for splitting. The cost is $75 per cord. Customers must first sign a waiver of liability and pay in advance at the Park Maintenance Office, 2055 Idlewild Drive. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday, excluding holidays. Payment by cash or check only.

Beaumont Park (formally Northgate Golf Course) Master Plan The City of Reno’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has applied for a planning assistance grant from the National Park Service to begin the process of converting the closed golf course into the City’s first Regional Park. Under the grant, park planning and landscape architectural staff from the National Park Service will act as the City’s consultant through a public process to develop a plan to guide future development and restoration of the site into a regional park and trails system. If received, the anticipated 18-month planning process will likely begin in November or December 2012. The City has also applied to Nevada State Parks for a Recreational Trails Grant to begin building a functional non-motorized trail system through the park, pending the outcome of the planning process. Watch for more information soon!
