Into Deadly Storms

by Judi Daykin

Detective Sara Hirst returns in this crackling, twisty thriller set in the mysterious beauty of North Norfolk. Author Judi Daykin lives in North Norfolk and was determined that her stories would be set in the countryside around her own home.

“I’ve lived in Norfolk for over forty years, and I love the countryside on the north coast. I love the big skies and the patchwork of small villages, the seaside resorts, the wide beaches and the network of back lanes. It has such a strong identity that I knew it could be a major factor in the crimes that I wanted to write about. People often think of Norfolk as the pleasant holiday destination they remember from childhood or a family day out by the sea. But it also has its dark side, and policing in rural communities presents very different challenges to those in a city.”

Judi’s stories are gritty police procedurals which refl ect the idea that great beauty can sometimes conceal great violence. Into Deadly Storms is the second Norfolk murder for DS Sara Hirst to solve, and it’s a tough one. She is trying to get justice for a teenager in care by following a web of leads that seem to go nowhere. Add in a London criminal on the run, and the problems multiply. Rumour has it that the third installment may be coming later this year. Judi said “I Judi's fi rst novel was over the moon Under when Joffe Books Violent Skies wanted to publish has been my books. They are longlisted for the helping me develop Crime Writers a series of novels, Association and all will feature John Creasey the glorious Norfolk (New Blood) countryside.” Dagger Award

With over 40 mythical creatures to read about you are certain to be entertained; you will even learn which historical fi gure claimed to have ridden on a unicorn and whose unearthed skeleton reached a monstrous 40 feet in length!

Tam, who also works as a researcher for fi lm and television her recent work includes Judi Dench's Wild Borneo Adventure, said "Since I was little I've always loved fantastical animals, old history and a good myth or legend. I adored the mythical creatures in the Tomb Raider series and wanted to be Lara Croft when I grew up… some things don't change! This book was the perfect chance to combine all of these loves into one exciting writing adventure."

The Ranworth Maltsters

Boasting a large terrace and a beautiful garden overlooking Malthouse Broad, this family-run pub also had a heated undercover area built in preparation for its reopening in April, so there are options whatever the weather. Peckish? Choose from a variety of pub classics or made-to-order pizza from Milson’s Pizza Den, which has its own hut in the beer garden.

King’s Head, Letheringsett

Situated just outside Holt, The Kings Head offers an enclosed country garden surrounded by parkland – the perfect place to enjoy a tipple or two. A marquee, kid’s play area, real ales on tap and food available all day from The Shack outdoor serving hatch – what more could you need on a bright summer’s day?

DID YOU KNOW?

Although now popular in many countries throughout the world, beer gardens originated in Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria, in the 19th century and remain common in southern Germany.

Ye Olde Cross Keys, Aldeburgh

Rich history dating back to 1540? Check. Beachfront seating area offering views of the sun, sea and sand? Check. Serving a range of Adnams beers and a spring menu featuring mouthwatering homecooked dishes (‘Long Horn’ pulled beef brisket chilli con carne is on our hit list), every box here is ticked.

The Ramsholt Arms

Being the only south facing pub on the river Deben, the Ramsholt Arms beer garden boasts a front row seat to some spectacular sunsets, not to mention its neighbouring beach and crab fi shing jetty. The menu consists of fresh locally caught seafood, sharing platters and traditional pub grub. Tables are currently operating on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis, so get one while you can!

King’s Arms, Shouldham

Set on Shouldham’s pretty village green, this historic pub is a must-visit for beer lovers, having won the West Norfolk CAMRA Pub of the Year for four years running. Real ales are served straight from the cask and the menu is packed with Norfolk produce. There’s also undercover seating for the British summer’s inevitable drizzly days.
