SHARP SHOOTERS A focus on property Irish born photographer, Stuart Murray has been an integral part of the Places Magazine team since the first edition hit the press in 2004. His keen eye and undeniable talent has helped the agency set new benchmarks in the way residential property is marketed. How long have you been a photographer?
What do you look for when you’re composing a hero shot?
What makes properties in Brisbane different to shoot than in other cities?
I began taking pictures as an amateur photographer in the mid 90’s. Back then I worked in the travel industry, and my job took me to many exotic locations. My travels afforded me an opportunity to build a great photographic portfolio which I used to get into Art College. I chose photography because I wanted to be my own boss and work in a field I love.
I always to try create three points of interest to keep the viewer engaged. Photography is all about threes: the rule of thirds in composition, interest in the foreground and background, and a point of interest to tie them together. The viewer needs to be engaged and feel comfortable in what they are seeing.
Our weather, we have these amazing and powerful summer storms which can create chaos on hot summer days but usually pass by day’s end, leaving us with beautifully coloured dusks. The colours can be quite amazing.
Describe your photographic style. My style is clean and classic. A good image is created in camera and needs very little processing. I was shooting for many years before the advent of digital cameras so I know the importance of getting it right in camera.
What do you enjoy most about your work? I enjoy the relationships most. I have some great clients who I love catching up with socially. We are friends as well as colleagues. I am invested in their success and pride myself on being an asset to them. I also feel privileged to be invited into so many great homes and meet some great people, their families, and their pets.
What’s been the most challenging space you’ve been asked to shoot? I took a last minute job a few months ago to photograph a large hair salon… while it was open! The images needed to be photographed and delivered the same afternoon to make the deadline. The salon was packed and it was all rather chaotic. Ladies were being shoved from room to room mid cuts and colour to cater for us. We had to style and shoot spaces in a matter of minutes - it felt like an episode of Fawlty Towers! But fortunately we managed to get some great shots and the client was really happy.
Do you have a favourite architect? There are so many great architects but I’m a big fan of local architect, Robert Riddel. I got to photograph the “Water Tank” home on Balmoral hill which he reinvented. It is an amazing home. Absolutely unique. He is renowned for reusing existing buildings, which I really admire.
Where do you look for inspiration? I feel most inspired when I get out of the city. I grew up in rural Ireland and I love the countryside. I am inspired by nature and take whatever opportunity I can to visit some of the great regional areas we have in South-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Which iconic Brisbane building would you love to photograph? I would love to get into the inner sanctum of City Hall. I am sure there would be some great hidden spaces or little old rooms that would reveal some history.
