In a post-industrial culture that romanticises the ‘do it yourself’ movement, Ministry of Handmade founder Julie Hillier has built the perfect platform for creativity.


Can you tell us about your studios in Bridgeman Downs?

Your recent Maker’s Escape retreat got rave reviews. Tell us about it.

Our studios are in our family home where we have lived for nearly 25 years. With three grown children who have flown the nest, we have lots of space to devote to Ministry of Handmade.

In May this year we hosted three days of creative workshops in Montville in the Sunshine Coast hinterlands. This event included creative embroidery, woodblock printing, resin jewellery, botanical watercolour, brush script lettering, lampshade making, crochet and more. It was a fully catered event with fabulous food, country hospitality and entertainment. It provided a wonderful opportunity for people to disconnect from their everyday life, relax, make new friends and discover new creative activities. It was a brilliant success and we are doing it again next year on the third weekend in May.

Set on a 1/3 acre block that adjoins a park and bushland you would never know we are only 12km from Brisbane CBD. You could be forgiven for thinking we were in the a rural setting, our outlook is trees, trees and more trees, a veggie garden, a chook yard and an elevated games lawn. It's such a peaceful and relaxing environment to get creative! From small beginnings in 2012, we now have three light airy studio spaces brimming with textiles and creative inspiration.

Places Magazine recently spoke to Julie Hillier about her craft, the Ministry of Handmade’s project-based workshops and her creative studios in Bridgeman Downs, Brisbane.

Our treetop deck and fire pit area are favourite spots when we need to spread out for workshops such as basket coiling, shibori dyeing and printing.

What led you to create the Ministry of Handmade? We started Ministry of Handmade five years ago as I was looking for a change in direction. I had seen some similar types of creative businesses overseas and thought “I could do that!” I studied design when I first left school and have always been passionate about making and creating. This combined with experience in training and marketing seemed like a good mix to start a business teaching handmade skills.

What handmade items do you specialise in? Most of the workshops we teach revolve around textiles: lampshades, ottomans, soft furnishings, clothing, shibori dyeing and crochet. We also invite other tutors to visit to teach things like wood block printing, screen printing, basket coiling and resin jewellery.

‘Do it yourself’, it’s a concept we often hear about. How easy can it be? The DIY ethos is gathering great momentum around the globe. I think this is in reaction to the proliferation of mass produced cheap goods flooding our stores, goods that have no soul and no story. Making something for ourselves allows us to connect with that part of our being that longs to move at a slower pace, to reconnect with how life used to be. In my opinion, as life becomes faster, the need for people to find quiet creative spaces will become stronger.

We saw that you have been chosen to make the lampshades for Halcyon House. Tell us about this opportunity. Halcyon House is a boutique hotel in Cabarita on the NSW north coast. We've been chosen to make 90 lampshades for their new luxurious day spa opening soon. The fabrics, all stunning linens, have started arriving and we have been busy creating the shades.
