Weeds of the Rockies
Presentation By: Tyler Plain
What are Noxious Weeds? •
Noxious weeds are plant species that are non-native to an environment. • Dominate and crowd out native vegetation • Aggressive and spread very rapidly • “Noxious” means the plant is on a state, federal, or local list that mandates management. 1. weed n. – A plant considered undesirable, unattractive, or troublesome, especially one growing where it is not wanted, as in a garden. – Rank growth of such plants.
2. The leaves or stems of a plant as distinguished from the seeds: dill weed. 3. Something useless, detrimental, or worthless, especially an animal unfit for breeding.
How do weeds spread? • Enter an environment with little to no natural biological control. • Transported by multiple activities: -motor vehicles -animals -wind, rain, natural hydrology -people - etc.
Why are weeds bad? • Invasive • Can kill animals and sometimes humans if injested -Russian Knapweed
-Poison Hemlock
• Negative impact on daily recreational activities • Eye sore

• Russian Knapweed -Ditches, banks, waste areas

• Purple Loosestrife -Stream banks, shorelines of shallow ponds
• Musk Thistle -land waste areas, areas of moist bottom soil

Houndstongue
Death from houndstongue poisoning is due to severe, irreversible liver failure. This poisoning often occurs in horse pastures when the plant is abundant or adequate forage is not available. It is potentially toxic when it is mixed with hay.

Green Cestrum www.northwestweeds.nsw.gov.au
Green cestrum can be toxic to animals including sheep, horses, pigs, poultry but ESPECIALLY CATTLE! According to "Noxious Plants of Australia" by Parsons & Cuthbertson (Inkata Press) it does not take much plant material to affect animals, which become feverish with poor appetites and increased thirst, are excited and sometimes scour before developing a general paralysis. Death usually occurs within hours of the first signs of symptoms so animals are often found dead without any symptoms being seen. Post-mortem examination shows general hemorrhaging throughout the body tissues, a large amount of blood in the bowel.
