Why Advertise in The Plains Producer 1. Target Market Regional newspapers provide access to a large, valuable and diverse market • All Plains Producers are distributed in your target market • Every one counts • You don’t necessarily want to promote your business in Mt. Gambier or Ceduna. That’s a waste of money • Keeps you at least abreast of your competitors, often ahead, but never behind. • Make your local patch your own
2. Popularity The Plains Producer enjoys a 90% penetration rate in Balaklava and surrounding areas. • This means nine out of every ten families buy the paper. • It also means around 7000 people read the Producer.
3. Local Involvement The Plains Producer is where people turn for local information. Country people love where they live. They are vitally interested in finding out what’s happening around them, so they will always turn to their local newspaper for news and views. It’s the way they get involved in their community.

JENNY Francis, who helps run the Balaklava Goodyear Autocare store with husband Roly and store manager Rob, says mums and young adults embarking on road trips over Easter need good quality tyres to cope with the miles for those Easter and school holiday trips. “If you venture out on the road on poorly maintained tyres you’re not only jeopardising yourself, but other road users as well,” Jenny said. “Under-inflated tyres generate excess heat, and with road surface temperatures and conditions changing, they can overheat or fail with catastrophic results. For anyone and everyone CHAP EVOLVES TO EXPAND SERVICES AND CHOICE AFTER 24 years of meeting the essential health and well being needs of rural residents, the Country Home Advocacy Project (CHAP), has changed its name to Country Home Services. Country Home Services CEO, Erik Moen said the organisation had grown and matured to become a critical part of regional community service delivery, over more than two decades. “We started with the vision that country people should receive the same level of home service as city people,” Erik said. “Now we have more than 1000 clients across the Lower North, Wakefield Plains, Barossa, Gawler and Yorke Peninsula. “We also have 30 employees across three offices in Nuriootpa, Clare and Maitland and 240 contractors.” Mr Moen said the name was a reflection of the maturity of the organisation and a “coming of age”. “I want to assure all our current clients that nothing else will change, only get better,” Erik said. “The name change demonstrates our ability to adapt within the health care sector. “We will continue to offer personalised, flexible home services for people seeking subsidised support. “But the big improvement is that we are now expanding our services to everyone and anyone in the community,
THE Country Home Services team (from left) Lucy McFadyen, Erik Moen, Joyce Fisher, Vonny Edwards, Tammy Judd, Kaye Klingner, Caroline Leaney, Gaby Lengyel and Janine Joy. regardless of age or ability, who needs extra help around the home.” The new business model will allow Country Home Services to offer clients more choice, helping to improve the quality of life in regional South Australia. Services available include, but are not limited to, domestic jobs such as
gardening and cleaning, to personal grooming, home maintenance and seasonal chores. Country Home Services will also continue to offer its unique brokering model, matching clients with locally based independent contractors. “These people understand and support our clients’ right to live in their own
homes in their chosen community,” Moen said. “At the core of our business we are country people and will continue to support our community how and where we can.” 4 For more information about Country Home Services’ new packages call 1300 773 202.

Kimberly’s Date Loaf delicious Balaklava’s Kimberly Brownlie has won numerous prizes at Balaklava Show, and is known around the district as a master sweets chef. But has she won us over with her Date Loaf? That would be a YES! Kimberly brought her warm loaf to the Producer, straight from the oven, with the delicious smell wafting through the office. The tried and tested favourite family recipe was sliced up, with each piece smothered in margarine. The mix made quite a wide log cake, and had a very even texture, making it easy to cut. It tasted a bit like it had golden syrup in it, but it hasn’t. And for those who aren’t fond of dates, it actually wasn’t too “datey!” As we like a hot date, this cake has our seal of approval.

Now the heavy lifting takes place
ASSEMBLING the mighty wind turbines for the Snowtown Stage 2 wind farm is not that complicated, says TrustPower’s project manager, Jim Pearson. “It’s just like a big Meccano set,” he says. “You just have to bolt it together.” Well, it’s some Meccano set, with a lot of very big bolts: a total of 160 – 80 inside and the same outside, for each of the three tower sections. And then it requires the biggest and strongest mobile crane in the world to lift all the parts into place – the Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 all-terrain mobile crane, capable of lifting up to 1200 tonnes, supported by a “small” 500 tonne crane for the lighter bits and pieces. There will be a lot of lifting carried out over the next 12 months before Snowtown Stage 2 is completed, with 90 towers to erect and a turbine hub height of 80 metres. First the actual towers must be bolted
together and installed. The base tower weighs 74 tonnes, the mid section is 51 tonnes and the top section 23 tonnes. Next step is to lift the 73 tonne turbine nacelle into position at the top of the tower. Mr Pearson explains the three 10.2 tonne blades (which are either 49m or 53m long) are then attached to a 29.4 tonne rotor hub and the whole assembly, now totalling around 60 tonnes, is lifted as one unit and fitted to the nacelles. Unlike Meccano, this is delicate and tricky work that requires two teams of specialist construction workers, each team comprising around 10 men. “Once we get rolling we’ll be able to construct about three turbines a week,” Pearson adds, “depending on the weather. If winds go above 12m/ second – that’s around 42km/h – we have to halt lifting operations.” All going well, he expects all the turbines will be in place by July next year.

Child care a priority
HAMLEY Bridge Medical Centre is focusing on families, and in particular, kids! Staff will always see young children with urgent medical problems, and are happy to bulk bill children under the age of 16. Parents should be aware of recent changes to the Childhood National Immunisation Program (CNIP). According to the CNIP, children are due for immunisation at birth, two months (this can be given as early as six weeks), four months, six months, 12 months, 18 months and four years of age (this can be given at 3 ½ years). A new combination vaccine has been introduced, Menitorix , which reduces the number of injections required at 12 months from three to two. Also, a combination MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella) vaccine at 18 months has been incorporated to the schedule, providing full measles, mumps and rubella protection at an earlier age (the second dose was previously given at four years of age). This means children turning 18 months now, will only require one in-
jection when they turn four to complete their vaccination schedule. Immunisation is the safest and most effective way of protecting children and adults against harmful diseases before they come into contact with them in the community. Immunisation uses the body’s natural defence mechanism to build resistance to specific infections, not only protecting individuals, but increasing the community’s level of immunity. For information about lactose intolerance, food, fitness and dairy nutrients, call in to the centre for a Dairy Australia “Kids Good Health Recipe Book” and any Dairy SA brochures. Brochures are designed to assist with the right mix of fuel and nutrients for growing bodies. Well nourished children have more energy, greater concentration and less illness. n For any health concerns or to make an appointment, please contact Jenny, Jo or Lisa at the centre on 8528 2070. The Medical Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, starting consulting at 10am, and new patients are welcome.

MAIN BENEFITS Wakefield Pipeline opening to boost local economy
A $17 million upgrade to water supplies in and around the Wakefield Regional Council area has been completed, delivering a significant boost to the local economy. Work on a new 43-kilometre pipeline stretching from Auburn to Port Wakefield has
now been completed, offering the capacity to provide an additional 11.4 million litres of drinking water a day to the region. Minister for Water, Ian Hunter, said the supply upgrade was aimed at delivering a secure local water supply. “The Wakefield area is

American made, Quadra-Fre wood fires are the most efficient on the Australin market. With an efficiency rating o 79-82% this equates to substantial wood savings. Whilst the brand boasts of incredible efficiency, Quadra-Fire wood fires also warm your home without warming the planet. A recent Australian Greenhouse Office report has found that burning sustainable wood through an approved heater such as the Kemlan Bioburn range of heater is better for the environment than all other sources of home heating energy such as fossil fuel generated electricity, oil & gas, They also have the potential to reduce carbond dioxide emissions because an amount of carbon dioxide is released when the firewood is burnt.
