Llama letter hoax
LAST week’s edition of the Plains Producer featured a letter published referring to llamas “Not a lot of llama love out there”, supposedly from D. Crawford. The Plains Producer received an email allegedly from Mr Crawford and upon requesting more information, the sender confirmed his name as Duncan Crawford, of Balaklava. It has since been proven to be a hoax. We wish to apologise to Duncan Crawford, of Halbury, as it appears the letter writer was attempting to have some fun at his expense.

Hercules planes wow locals THE next crop of Air Force’s Hercules transport pilots and loadmasters were training in local skies last week and over the weekend. Working from RAAF Base Edinburgh, the training involved two C-130J-30 Hercules transport aircraft operating to airfields in Minlaton, Whyalla and Loxton. The training also included airdrop activity at Balaklava and Murray Bridge airfields. Commanding Officer of No 285 Squadron, Wing Commander (W/Cdr) Nick Hogan, said one C-130J flew to Balaklava airfield twice on Friday afternoon, dropping four light equipment loads on each occasion. This was followed by a night airdrop on Saturday evening. The Plains Producer received word of the exercises from an ‘old’ Balaklava High School student (1960-61), Colin Coyne. Mr Coyne is an ex RAAF No 37 Squadron Hercules transport aircraft Loadmaster (1981-1990) and current President of the No 37 Squadron (RAAF) Association, now based in Queensland. His mother, Jean Coyne, only recently moved out of Port Wakefield. Flight Lieutenant (Fl Lt) Adrian Willey is one of the qualified flying instructors from No 285 Squadron who worked with three C-130J-30 pilots during the training course. “The missions involved a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from airdrop to formation flying, to low-level flying on night vision goggles,” Flight Lieutenant Willey said. “These students have completed over 100 hours of simulation, as well as validation flights around the country to prepare them for this exercise. “Bringing these students to train in South Australia requires them to

Air Force operates a fleet of 12 C-130J Hercules, with each aircraft being able to carry more than 120
passengers or up to 20 tonnes of cargo. Alternatively, it can carry 92 paratroops or an assortment of cargo that can be delivered by parachute. “The Hercules provides a tactical airlift capability which is essential for the Australian Defence Force,” Fl Lt Willey said. “The skills practiced by these students over South Australia will no
doubt be applied on missions around the globe.” Various models of the C-130 Hercules have been transport workhorses for Defence since the introduction of the C-130A in December 1958. Today’s C-130J-30 Hercules features modern avionics and communications systems, carrying a crew of two pilots and a loadmaster.

Grass control crucial for croppers KEEPING on top of grass weeds has been a constant game of chess for Yorke Peninsula and Lower North croppers and they have had to remain proactive in their operations to continue making effective weed control moves. Chris Davey, agriservices agronomist with YP AG at Kadina, said annual ryegrass was the major problem for growers. It has thrived in the environment of mainly sandy loam to clay loam, high calcareous soils and 300-400 millimetres of annual rainfall. The region’s soil types also feature non-wetting sands through to waterlogged clays and sheet rock. Chris well recalls the different weed control moves over many years of continuous cropping. “In the 70s and 80s we were using Glean and Logran, to which weeds, including annual ryegrass, developed resistance. Trifluralin was continuously used year-after-year and by the late 90s, testing showed full resistance. Group A ‘fops’ resistance was also prevalent in the late 90s. Group D, B and Group A ‘fops’ were all fast becoming useless,’’ Chris said. “The traditional strategy was a pre-sowing application of trifluralin or trifluralin/Avadex Xtra and then relying post-emergent on ‘fops’. Achieve and Hussar were also used in the cereal rotation, but as they were battling Group A ‘dim’ and Group B resistance, they struggled for consistent ryegrass control. “Break crops are commonly used, with Select becoming popular in

Boxer Gold arrived and assisted with ryegrass control by bringing a new mode of action chemical into the rotation.’’ He said other grass control strategies, including non-chemical control methods, have also been employed. Chris said the ryegrass problem, together with brome grass and wild
oats in numerous cases, was reducing yields by 0.5-1 tonne per hectare – but then came the introduction of the Group K pre-emergent herbicide, Sakura 850 WG, and it has since been widely adopted. Containing the active ingredient, pyroxasulfone, Sakura is a highly concentrated granule from Bayer and has a low use rate of 118 g/ha. It controls annual ryegrass, barley grass, silver grass, annual phalaris and toad rush and provides suppression of wild oats and great
brome in wheat (not durum wheat), triticale, chickpea, lupin and field pea crops. “Growers are largely using Boxer Gold in barley and Sakura in wheat and some are now cutting out other applications. They are not coming back with second sprays because there is no confidence in the postemergent products available due to the resistance measured,’’ Chris said. He said the length of control shown by Sakura since its first year of application had been outstanding. “It provides control for up to 10 weeks after sowing, whereas Boxer Gold was observed to offer up to six weeks control.’’ “Sakura is mostly applied within a few hours to a few days before sowing and also has the added benefit of providing good control of barley grass, shallow germinating brome grass and wild oats. In worst case scenarios, Avadex (Xtra) is included as a tank-mix partner to aid ryegrass control and to provide better brome grass control.’’ While the latest moves have been effective, the chess game is set to continue and Chris said, due to the current reliance on pre-emergent herbicides, growers should be alert to rotating their chemical modes of action. Heath Ward, agronomist with AW Vater & Co at Saddleworth, has been working in the Lower North for the past six years and said it was a similar story with grass control in the largely mixed farming region, which receives 450mm plus annual rainfall and features predominantly
heavy clay soils. Heath said annual ryegrass control was the number one concern, with populations and resistance increasing and, as a result, influencing operational decisions. “Growers realised they needed something else to help Boxer Gold rotationally and Sakura also provided longer residual control,” he said. He said there was a rapid uptake of Sakura and it was now preferred for wheat, while Boxer Gold was used in barley. Heath said he had not seen any activity issues with the herbicide however, and, due to the longer residual control, growers generally did not have to carry out further grass sprays. “Sakura has definitely returned paddocks back to good cropping paddocks. Good country has only been improved by Sakura,” he said. “Growers who used to walk through paddocks riddled with ryegrass now find that they are relatively clean.’’ He said Sakura had also shown relatively good control of wild oats, otherwise it was generally costeffective to undertake later wild oat control. It also provided good suppression of shallow germinations of brome grass, which was an up and coming threat for growers. Heath said Sakura was also an extremely valuable control option in high trash situations. “I’ve seen it in a paddock with above 50 per cent trash and it has done a good job.’’

Tayla takes on the big guns HUMMOCKS A1 netballer, Tayla Williams, has been selected to play for the Secondary School Sports South Australia 15 & Under netball team, which will be playing matches against state league teams Contax and Matrics in the coming weeks. All city girls had trialled previously and the girls selected then came together with the country girls and trials were held on May 3 at Netball SA Stadium, Mile End. From this a squad was selected for a final trial on May 10. Tayla made it through the selection process and is currently attending weekly training sessions which are held at Henley Beach Primary School and St Michaels Secondary College. Tayla will be attending a
two day camp in the second week of the school holidays in Adelaide. The team attended the Mid Hills Carnival on Sunday May 24, where it competed in the senior competition and won the Grand Final against St Mary’s. A great effort by the girls as this was the first time they had played a game with each other. Tayla is training in the positions of C, GD & WD. The team consists of some country girls from Loxton, Mount Gambier and Mid Hills, the rest being from the city. Tayla and her family will be travelling to Sydney from August 22-28, where she will play at Olympic Park, Homebush. Tayla is the second daughter of Kirsty and Anthony Williams of Balaklava.

MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION Paint your front door in a vibrant red or classic black lacquer to punch up your curb appeal for a welcoming entryway. TAKE IT INSIDE During the cold months, an indoor garden is the best way to enjoy foliage all year long (right). Liven up the corners of a room by adding plants. Grow herbs in small pots near a kitchen window or fill planters with colourful blooms to flank your front door. CHALK IT UP One of the easiest, most inexpensive ways to add a custom look to a space is to cover a surface with chalkboard paint. Whether used for a grocery list on the inside of a cabinet or an impromptu art center for kids, chalkboard paint is a fun addition to any space. HARK THE TILE Sometimes, just changing out your back splash adds a whole new feel to your kitchen. Splurging on stainless steel can create a stylish
look, but using an inexpensive material can also add visual interest. Try magnetic paint, tin ceiling tiles, wallpaper or wooden beadboard for creative, affordable options. SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND Brighten counter tops and cabinets by adding light. Small batterypowered LED puck lights are inexpensive and easy to install under and inside cabinets to bring light into your kitchen
Lawn tips: Slow the mow WITH winter on the horizon it is important to adjust your lawn care regime to suit the shorter and colder days. Your lawn will slow its growth but regular lawn maintenance can ensure it doesn’t lose its vitality. Australian turf grower and President of Turf Australia, Anthony Muscat says winter can be a great time to embrace the crisp air and prepare your lawn for a growth spurt in spring. Here are Anthony Muscat’s top five winter lawn care tips: 1) Aerate With the lawn in less use during winter, you get a good chance to aerate, relieving it of any compacting that occurred over summer and autumn. Aerating the lawn allows oxygen to flow freely to the lawn roots and water to penetrate the soil. After you aerate, fill the holes with gypsum, which opens the soil to allow faster drainage. Unsure if you need to aerate? Try to push a screwdriver into the soil. If it doesn’t go in easily you need to aerate. Do this by pushing a garden fork into the soil about 7-10cm, rocking it back and forth and repeating at 20cm
intervals. For larger lawns you may wish to hire an aerating machine. 2) Slow the Mow Remember to continue mowing your lawn throughout winter so that the thatch layer doesn’t build up. However, as cool weather stunts grass growth, you can raise your cutting height to 2.5cm and reduce mowing frequency. 3) Weeding As our lawns become more dormant in the winter, unwelcome weeds are given the opportunity to creep in. Importantly, mowing your grass higher helps prevent them becoming prominent. If there are only a small number of weeds, dig them out by hand. There are many herbicides available to target the various weed species. Some turf varieties are sensitive to particular herbicides so it is important to buy one to suit your turf type and target the right

If so, visit your local turf supplier and pick up some turf rolls to fill in the gaps or alternatively top dressing with a nice clean sandy soil can do the job too. 5) Clear the leaves Where possible it is advisable to try to minimise the leaf litter on your lawn throughout winter to ensure good light penetration to your grass. In the last week of winter, do a sweep of the garden and clear up the last of any leaves. This will give your lawn the oxygen and sunlight it needs to prepare for a spring revival.

Jared, 26, runs and manages a mixed enterprise of cropping and livestock over 2000 hectares at Mallala, Lower Light and Long Plains with father, Dean. His wife of two and a half years, Ashyka, a country girl from Kangaroo Island, is also part of the picture. Jared said they sowed some feed on April 5 and started cropping oat hay on April 28. “We’re about 10 days earlier than we were last year and it’s looking really good,” he said. “A bit more rain wouldn’t hurt but it’s not too dry at the moment. “We had a good start already, some of the feed is up and getting hay in after Anzac Day has resulted in good germination as well.” The Curnows have put in a mix of canola, oats, beans, lentils, peas, wheat and barley. “We sort of do a bit of everything and spread the risk a bit,” Jared laughed. The start is similar to last season, although the dry finish
