Another Great Opportunity

s the end of another school year quickly approaches, it’s gratifying to take a moment and reflect on all of the incredible opportunities provided for our students beyond the classroom. This time of the year, I can hardly go anywhere after school without seeing a team of Girls on the Run practicing for their big event. Now that the weather is cooperating, every afternoon is filled with spring sports, including our Renaissance High School softball program which grows each year. And I can’t overlook the annual high school musical and Collage concert as well as the elementary and middle school performances that fill the last few months of the year. While participation in extracurricular activities is the goal, it’s even sweeter when the students excel such as the Cooper Battle of the Books team who brought the Championship Trophy home and our new Middle School Robotics team who placed so well at Regionals that they competed at the state level in their very first year! This list of opportunities is far from exhaustive and each provides an avenue for

students to learn, grow and gain new confidence. If your child has not participated in an extra-curricular activity, encourage him or her to do so. The research is clear – students who participate in activities outside the classroom experience more success inside the classroom. Here are some opportunities for you and your child to consider... The Times Are Changing... In the area of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, I cannot recall a time of such rapid change and increasing expectations. Of the many activities and changes taking place in Plainwell Schools allow me to share just one of those changes with you.

QUANTUM LEARNING

ast August, thirty Plainwell teachers participated in a workshop called Quantum Learning. The workshop was so powerful and effective that we will be offering it again this August to as many teachers as can attend. Quantum Learning came to us from Chase Mielke, a high school English and Positive Psychology teacher who has had advanced training in this method and has traveled across the county doing a student version of this called Super Camp. He is an approved Quantum Learning trainer and will be running our workshops for us. So what is Quantum Learning? According to the Quantum Learning Network, it is “a powerful research-based educational method-

ology that increases teacher effectiveness and improves student performance through the orchestration of five core components: Foundation, Atmosphere, Environment, Design, and Delivery. It is a simple yet effective model for creating an all-encompassing culture of academic and personal excellence. This powerful results-oriented methodology increases leadership and teacher effectiveness and improves student success with the Common Core. With the Quantum Learning System, teachers develop a comprehensive approach leading to greater student participation, comprehension, and critical thinking. They learn to create a supportive classroom environment and a positive, safe atmosphere.” Having seen this training, I can attest that

Quantum Learning is a perfect fit for our goals to promote student character and wise decision making; build strong, positive relationships with students; and provide rigorous and engaging instruction. I could easily write of many other new activities and changes happening here...from 1 to 1 iPads at the high school to new interventions for struggling students at the middle school to our highly-successful new kindergarten readiness program. As I said in the opening, things have never been busier or filled with more change. Plainwell teachers and principals are stepping up to these challenges and opportunities, working harder than ever for the benefit of our students. The community should be proud of their efforts. n

s we were going to press with this issue of School Matters, we were notified by the media that Plainwell High School was chosen as one of Newsweek Magazine’s America’s Best High Schools for 2013! Newsweek and The Daily Beast rank and highlight the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation—those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP course (5 percent). CLASS OF 2013 Top Academic Students Elizabeth Anderson is the daughter of Rich and Kristin Anderson. Elizabeth will be attending the University of Michigan this fall and will be majoring in Civil Engineering. While at Plainwell High School, Elizabeth volunteered as a Big Sister to a Starr Elementary student, was on the Principal’s Student Advisory Committee and is a National Honor Society member and an AP Scholar. Seth Anderson is the son of Curt and Amy Anderson. This fall Seth will be studying Biology at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. Seth was a member of the PHS men’s soccer team for four years and is an AP Scholar. Tori Bergman is the daughter of Brian and Tamara Bergman. Tori will become a Spartan at Michigan State University where she will study Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine and continue her studies to become a doctor of Equine Medicine. Tori was a member of the PHS Cross Country team and the PHS Women’s Basketball team. She is a National Society Member as well as a Red Cross Club member. Elizabeth Bingham is the daughter of Jim and Lynn Bingham and Dolores Bingham. Ellie will major in Finance at Western Michigan University this fall. During her years at PHS, Ellie was a National Honor Society member and tutored students in French. Luke Boulter is the son of Jon and Lisa Boulter. Luke will be attending Kettering University where he will major in Mechanical Engineering. Luke has been a member of the PHS Cross Country and Track teams where he earned All Region and All Conference honors. He also participated in Quiz Bowl and is a member of the National Honor Society. Luke served on the Plainwell Captain’s Council and is a PAL. Molly Boylan is the daughter of Mike and Libby Boylan. Molly will be attending Michigan State University this fall where she will be studying Pre-Medical sciences. Molly has been a 4 year member of the PHS Women’s Swim team, 3 year member of the PHS Women’s Tennis team, as well as participating in Quiz Bowl and French Club. Molly is also the Yearbook Co-Editor in Chief and a member of the National Honor Society. Rachel Colyer is the daughter of Angela Colyer and Andrew Colyer. This fall, Rachel will become a Wolverine at the University of Michigan. She has not declared a major at this time. Rachel is the Senior class treasurer as well as a National Honor Society member and has been on the Quiz Bowl team and part of the Red Cross Club. Kelsey Ernst is the daughter of Brian and Jenny Ernst. Kelsey is attending the University of Michigan and will study Molecular Biology and BioMedical Engineering. Kelsey was a member of the PHS Swim team, a 4 year member of the PHS Band, a member of the Twin Cities Rhythm Drumline and also serves as the Vice President of the PHS National Honor Society. Kelsey has been honored as a National Merit Finalist this year.

Samantha Hover is the daughter of Steve and Patty Hover. Samantha is planning to attend Western Michigan University to study Biology. During her years at at PHS, Samantha was in Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band and the Jazz Band. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Adam Licavoli is the son of Don and Kim Licavoli. Adam will study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. Adam swam 4 years for the PHS Swim team where he earned the Academic All American award. He also is a 4 year member of the Cross Country and Track teams. Adam is a member of the National Honor Society, Red Cross Club and participated in Quiz Bowl. William “Burt” Murgittroyd is the son of Rose Mary Murgittroyd and the late Michael Murgittroyd. Burt will be attending Michigan State University this fall and major in Biomedical Engineering. While at PHS Burt has participated in Track, Football and played 4 years of basketball. Sarah Nuyen is the daughter of Kenrick and Jacquline Nuyen. Sarah plans to attend the University of Michigan where she will major in Biology and minor in French. Sarah is a member of the Student Senate, French Club and National Honors Society. She also was on the Quiz Bowl team and the PHS Women’s tennis team and was selected as Plainwell High School’s DAR Good Citizen Nominee. Ryan Pell is the son of Ken and Toni Pell. This fall, Ryan will enroll at Western Michigan University to study Finance. Ryan was part of the PHS Men’s Soccer team as well as the PHS Basketball team. Zach Rush is the son of Cindy Rush and Greg Rush. This coming year, Zach will be attending Western Michigan University to study Aeronautical Engineering. Zach is a member of the National Honor Society and was a 4 year member of the PHS Men’s soccer team. Alison Seiler is the daughter of Greg and Dawn Seiler. Ally is attending Michigan State University this year to major in Communications and Business. Ally has been a member of the Varsity swim team and Varsity tennis team as well as National Honor Society. She was a concert choir student and participated in the musicals and also wrote for the Trojan Torch. Sabian Taylor is the daughter of Ken Taylor and Ronda Taylor. Sabian will attend the University of Michigan this fall where she will be a Microbiology and Pre-Med major. Sabian ran Cross Country and Track in high school and played for the JV soccer team. She is a National Honor Society member, Red Cross Club member, been in the PHS Marching Band and Wind Ensemble and is the Senior Class president.

Max Tustin is the son of Jeff and Katie Tustin. Max will be attending Hope College this fall where he will be pursuing a degree in Education. While at Plainwell High school, Max was a member of the PHS Band, Concert Choir, National Honor Society and Red Cross Club. He also played Varsity Tennis and ran Track. Max played the lead in this year’s musical, “Crazy For You.” Audrey VanderBoon is the daughter of John and Katy VanderBoon. This fall, Audrey will attend Warren Wilson College in North Carolina where she will major in Outdoor Leadership and Spanish and swim for their swim team. Audrey has been a 4 year member of the PHS Swim/Dive team and played soccer and tennis as well. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Red Cross Club and a PAL. She participated in Quiz Bowl and the high school musicals. Megan VanderBoon is the daughter of John and Katy VanderBoon. Megan will be pursuing a degree in Communications and Business in the Honor’s program at KVCC. Megan earned an All American Academic award while swimming for the PHS Swim/Dive team as well as All-State, All-County and All Conference honors. She also played soccer and tennis for the high school. Megan is a member of the National Honor Society, French Club, Quiz Bowl and a PAL. Brittany VanHaitsma is the daughter of Debra Doest. Brittany will begin her college career at KVCC and then transfer to the Pharmacy school at Ferris State University. Brittany is involved with the Red Cross Club and is a member of the National Honor Society. Tyler White is the son of Brian and Ronda White. Tyler will be playing Football for the Fighting Illini at the University of Illinois this fall and majoring in Engineering. Tyler has been a 4 year member of both the PHS Football and Basketball teams as well as a 3 year Track member. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Michael Yarzebinski is the son of Sue Kuhr and Don Yarzebinski. Mike will be pursuing a degree in Physics at Michigan State University. Mike has run both Cross Country and Track for PHS as well as playing Football and Basketball. Mike is a member of the National Honor Society, Red Cross Club and is a PAL. Grant Zamora is the son of Mike and Lori Zamora. Grant will be attending the University of Michigan this fall but is still unsure of what he will be majoring in. While at PHS, Grant was a member of the PHS Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band and Jazz Band. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Hannah Zerbel is the daughter of Jim and Wendy Zerbel. Hannah will be attending Hope College and will pursue a degree in Engineering. Hannah played for the PHS Women’s basketball team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Red Cross Club and is a PAL.

Renaissance Students Honor Local Man on Arbor Day

ceremony honoring Larry Green, the only known man killed at the Plainwell Paper Mill, was held on Arbor Day, Friday, April 26, 2013 at the new Public Safety building in Plainwell. Students from Renaissance High School performed a skit based on Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. PHS Marching Band Descends on Disney World The PHS Marching Band was honored this year by earning a place to perform in the Magic Kingdom Main Street Electric Parade at Disney World over spring break. The Drum Majors pictured at right are Lucy LaVoy, Abbie Porter and Olivia Deal. Carrying the American Flag is Spencer Brignall, and carrying the PHS Banner is Micah Edwards. The students did an amazing job during the performance and represented our community proudly!

Middle School Announces STEM Summer Academy

lainwell Middle School will host a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Summer Academy, July 8 through July 12 from 9 am to 4 pm. This summer’s theme is “Superstorm Solutions,” so students should be ready for a deep dive into inventing new ways to help people cope with natural threats like hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions! At the academy, students will learn how to analyze real world issues, and research and design solutions in a team setting. The academy will also include LEGO® robotics instruction, hands-on applications of new presentation software, and the chance to meet engineers and scientists in STEM areas. Tuition is $50 for in-district students and $75 for out-of-district students, and will include lunch and a daily swim. The Block Kids Building Program Held at Gilkey!

ilkey Elementary was host to the National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC) Annual “Block Kids” Building Program with assistance from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Southwest Michigan Branch. The Block Kids Building Program is a national building competition that introduces students to the construction and engineering industries, as a way to pique their interest in possible careers, and is supported by the NAWIC Education Foundation. The program is open to all elementary schools students in 1st through 6th grades. Each student has one hour and is provided with 100 “Lego”type building blocks with the option to choose three other items (rock, string, aluminum foil or poster board) to incorporate into their structure. Volunteer judges from the construction and engineering industry view each student’s project and discuss with them what they have constructed with evaluations being recorded on a point system. A total of 125 students participated, 42 judges from the community volunteered, and eight parent volunteers assisted. In addition, 40 companies donated goodies, gift certificates, aprons, refreshments, and cash to make the event a success! n

gain this year, art students from Cooper, Gilkey and Starr Elementary Schools participated in the China Art Exchange, which is sponsored by the 4-H Extension through Michigan State University. Ten students’ artwork has been forwarded to Michigan State to be evaluated and selected to represent Plainwell and be sent to China. The schools will in turn receive art from the students in the Shangdong province at the end of the school year. Each building will have several pieces to add to the growing collection of art from China. The finalists whose work will be chosen will be notified in a few weeks. Get Involved This Spring Season!

pring is an exciting time of year and for many, including myself, a favorite season. The frogs croaking in our backyard swamp, or the robins chirping as the sun rises to melt the frost on the grass, are signs that warm weather is approaching. With that warm weather comes the opportunity to get outside and enjoy those long awaited outdoor activities. Spring is also an exciting time for our recreation department! Outdoor activities including summer youth ball and golf lessons at Lake Doster will be kicking off and I hope you can find a way to become involved. Whether as a coach, an assistant, a team parent or a participant, volunteer opportunities await you. And, as always, we couldn’t run our programs without you. Thank you for being involved! We are always interested in new ideas for programs and appreciate your feedback. If you have suggestions, please contact me. I welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Trip Was Out-Of-This-World!

n Saturday, March 9, at 5:15 p.m. four school busses full of moms and sons slowly rolled away from the bus garage on Starr Road and headed north toward Grand Rapids. We took the “long” way around so we could pass by the home of Officer Varren Davis, who had recently returned home from Afghanistan. We lowered our windows, cheered, whistled and sounded the bus horns as our procession passed. It was a wonderful way to start a great night. At Van Andel Arena, the Plainwell mothers and sons descended upon “Star Wars Night” with their tickets, food vouchers and cameras ready. Our section of the arena was alive with hearty cheering, singing and dancing along. The Grand Rapids Griffins prevailed and we returned with tired boys and smiles on our faces. Thank you to all who attended. Let’s do it again next year! n

Plainwell Middle School will host a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Summer Academy. This summer’s theme is “Superstorm Solutions,” so students should be ready for a deep dive into inventing new ways to help people cope with natural threats like hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions! At the academy, students will learn how to analyze real world issues, and research and design solutions in a team setting. The academy will also include LEGO robotics instruction, hands-on applications of new presentation software, and the chance to meet engineers and scientists in STEM areas. This class is for incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Space is limited to 40 middle school students, so register early. Tae Kwon Do is a 200-year-old martial art and it is the national sport of Korea. It is a dynamic form of self-defense and an excellent means of physical fitness for men, women and children of all ages. This form of martial art includes physical techniques, mental discipline and a deep philosophy. Improve coordination, gain strength, and increase your flexibility while learning self-defense techniques from an ancient Korean martial art form. he Plainwell Athletic Department welcomes David Groves as the Women’s Head Soccer Coach beginning with the Spring 2013 season. David is also the Men’s Head Coach at Kalamazoo Central, where in his first season with the Maroon Giants, he coached them to a decade best 14-7 record. In previous high school coaching stints, he was an assistant at Portage Northern and coached the JV team at Portage Central. He has also coached youth teams at Kingdom Premier, Portage Soccer Club, and Wolfpack Soccer Club (Huntington Beach, CA). David has a BA degree in Finance from Western Michigan University and is also working toward his MA at WMU. Let’s welcome Coach Groves to the Trojan team! n

he Plainwell Athletic Department is proud to announce the 2012-13 MHSAA All-State Swimmers & Divers from Plainwell High School. This is the 17th consecutive year that Plainwell has had an All-State team. SAFE and Plainwell Corners Preschool

t is finally spring and time to plan for summer fun! The Plainwell Community School’s Plainwell Corners and the school age SAFE programs are currently registering children for the following self funded programs: Plainwell Corners Summer Camp: Designed for children between 3 years old and completing Kindergarten. Located at the Early Childhood Education Center. Special guests, games, crafts and other fun activities. Plainwell SAFE Summer Fun Camp: Designed for children who are completing 1st grade through 5th grade in 2012-2013. Field trips, swimming, games, crafts and loads of other fun activities! Plainwell Corners Preschool & Daycare: Prepares your child for success! A Preschool offering a developmentally appropriate and fun curriculum designed for toilet-trained children who are three or four years old. Plainwell Corners is now a licensed year around program open Mondays - Fridays from 6:30 am until 6 pm at the Early Childhood Education Center at 307 E. Plainwell Street (next to Hicks Gym) for a $135 weekly rate or $37 daily rate. Now offering a half day rate. Half-day sessions for 3-year olds are offered on M & W for $125/monthly. Halfday sessions for 4-year olds are offered on T, Th & F for $180/monthly. SAFE: A licensed before and after school program providing a place to make friends and enjoy recreational activities, available for children from all three Plainwell Elementary schools. Open weekdays from 6:30 am until 6 pm. Cooper SAFE will be held at Cooper. Gilkey and Starr SAFE will be at their own school sites in the morning and are combined at Starr in the afternoon. Rates are posted online.
