S I T E ANALYSIS

KOH MAK, THAILAND At first glance, a small island with a small population located close to border like Koh Mak, would be considered de-facto dosconnected and remote. But a more in-depth investigation revealed its position as a node in a multiplicity of superimposed networks of trade(rubber, coconut), natural systems (ocean, currents, wind), migration (people, animals) travel and business.

SITE RESEARCH During the first phase of the studio, our team made an indepth- research on Koh Mak. We gathered and organized data around demographics, land-use patterns, history, ecosystem, economy, transportation and infrastructure. The main goals of the first research phase was to have a clear understanding of the complex and dynamic networks that affect the island and to unearth the latent potential ( programmatic, economic, experiential, spatial, etc) of the site.

MARINE CENTER & Aquarium PROTOTYPE Koh Mak could be an ideal location for a pilot pro ject due to available protected beach fronts and existing species living around the island. This eco facility would need to be coupled with a touristic program such as a ‘marine park’ to make it financially feasible, to benefit the local economy and to increase its exposure to larger masses.

The lacking of community spaces is the number one priority of the locals, followed by a small amount of public areas. The development process of the Green Hotel especially the programs has been designed for the people of Bang Kra Jao to support their needs while attracting more tourists. By using the canal and the floating market next to the site as a part the design, the event area of the Green Hotel will allow people to preserve and promote the local culture through series of exhibitions.

THE FIVE CATEGORIES - Lack of public services/public area

3. SURROUNDING - Surrounded by buildings and houses but public services/areas still missing

- Lack of storage/commercial spaces The first phase of the project is the research analysis which mainly concern about the problems and how to solve them with the urban design. The interviewees suggests many useful informations which I divided into five categories. The goal is to understand the characteric of Soi Ari then trying to adapting rather than changing it into completely new place.

- Lack of nature/ sunscreen places - Lack of safety on roads and footpaths - Lack of Circulation management

URBAN DESIGN CONCEPT INTERLOCKING CONCEPT

The indentity of Ari, commercial street has been adapted into community buildings which allow better use of spaces.

The project connect to the existing Ari BTS Station for easier and safer transportation and reduces traffic use.

Green Space

Walking Space

THE NEW AREE PARK This urban design project is located in Soi aree, known as one of bangkok’s most crowded area along the BTS skytrain line. Soi Aree has a very impressive growth rate, the increasing number of newcomers combined with people working and living creates major traffic problems. Also, due to the amount of unused space such as shophouses and old buildings, it is exrtremely important to rethink on how to make the most use out of this area. This new Community Park purposed a renovation to the area, linking existing BTS walkway to newly designed buildings and parking spaces. This public and commercial space utilized every buildings spaces properly, while the underground area can be used as multi-purpose area as well.

52 |

The open space create for the community to have more green space and more public area within the Soi.

Redesign the space by adding underground parking/storage spaces along with skybridges in order to avoid unneccesary traffic on the street .

The concept of the project is to redesign a space that gathers the commercial shops together by providing spaces and create a systematic categories on each level to ensure the effective way of organizing the space. Also the concept will provide addition storage areas and public spaces for the community according to the needs of the users. Different levels combined with new circulation system allows Soi Ari to have better circulation, more parking spaces, more open spaces while still maintain the main characteristic of the Soi created by those vendors and shops community.

The project proposal concerns about the identity of Soi Ari, the characteristic of the Soi filled with shops and vendors all the time becomes the uniqueness of the site and needs to be kept. The new design proposed a new community building type which creates better circulations and also to create a more systematic way for all of the shops and vendors. The New project reduces the traffic in the area while offering even more space for all of the commercial business. Also, creating a green area in order to solves the lack of open spaces according to the survey.

A: I lived here for a very long time, I think it was since this house first constrcuted.

A: Only just a few years ago. Not a very long time, but it seems like I lived here for a long time.

Q: How many households are in this community?

Q: Could you tell us more about this house? Why are these houses connected to each other?

Q: Why do you feel like you lived here for a long time? Why more than you think?

A: About 500 houses, but this is only Baan Krua Neua (north part). There are middle parts and southern parts, which we have to walk further, and that’s not in the area of my responsibility.

A: I am actually the owner of this house, first it was not 3 houses combined, but later on it was modified and now the house acted like a dormitory for renting.

A: I don’t really know, but I think I enjoy being here, the place is quiet and no busy activities going on around the place I stay.

Q: How many people live in this area?

Q: So how many families or people have been living in this house since it was changed into dormitory?

Q: Could you tell us more about this house?

A: About 3,000 people

A: There are couple of families lived here, but not all of them are family, there are individual too. It is separated into three houses, so each house per one family or individuals.

A: Well, I have been living in one of the room here, and there are lots of people living together right now. They are all friendly, we help each other if we can.

Q: I supposed you are Muslim? And are most of the people Muslim as well?

Q: If your houses are used as dormitory, where do you live?

Q: It seems like the house has been maintainance before, did you noticed some of it?

A: I lived here as well, me and my family live together with the renters but in a diffrent part of the house.

A: It stayed the same since I moved here but, I was told that the stairs has been re-created, it was made from wood before. I think it was different houses before, but I don’t really know the deep information about the history.

Q: What about safety? A: This community is pretty safe, there are no theives here, it is quite surprising for me too. We look at each others back, make sure everyone is safe. The community is quite close and friendly as you can see. Q: Since it seems like all the houses are connected so, do they really connected together or seperated? A: Yes, all of the houses are linked with each other and people can walk from one to another. Even though the houses are separated, but we are still very close neighbors.
