GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL CASE STUDY
GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL CASE STUDY
Warren and Plan Bee were great, I would recommend them to any community group who are thinking about keeping bees and learning more about them
Frazer MacLeod,
Glasgow City Council Project Lead – Stalled Spaces
PROJECT Installed beehives on the roof of council building and trained individuals on beekeeping processes.
SERVICES Plan Bee Ltd installed two beehives on the roof of Glasgow City Council’s iconic City Chambers building, right in the middle of the historic George Square. The location is in the bustling streets of Scotland’s largest city.
BENEFITS While many would consider such a vast, sprawling metropolis a difficult environment for honeybees, the council beehives are proof of the bountiful foraging opportunities for bee colonies, with an abundance of parks dotted within a handy radius of the city centre. Plan Bee’s expert beekeepers also trained council officials to manage the hives and enjoy a unique experience in raising their own urban, rooftop hives. The close working relationship between the two organisations extends into a number of additional areas across the educational and communications fields: •
Environmental education to thousands of Glasgow school children
•
Bespoke labelled honey for visiting dignitaries
•
Promotion of council’s strong sustainability ethos
•
Achieved national press and television coverage
