Substance Abuse Support Services Odyssey I and II are counselling programs for youth and families struggling with issues related to substance abuse with locations in Burnaby and Vancouver. The programs offer a supportive atmosphere where youth feel comfortable to explore alcohol and drug related issues and consider options for obtaining a healthier lifestyle. Youth can take part in the wide range of services including individual and family counselling, drop-in, social-recreational activities, crisis intervention,

2008

referrals, and substance abuse education. Nexus is an outreach counselling program located in downtown Vancouver, that provides services to high-risk

1

youth who are affected by substance abuse. The program offers support to empower youth to effectively deal with substance abuse issues and move towards a healthier lifestyle. Nexus provides a wide range of services including counselling, crisis intervention, assessments, referrals, and substance abuse education. In excess of 800 individuals are served by the Odyssey I, Odyssey II, and Nexus programs each year.

For more information regarding our programs and services, please contact our central office:

// What I like most about Nexus is the

flexibility of the program and counsellors. I feel like I’m in control of the process and no one is forcing me to adhere to institutional goals, like other programs.

// There’s always someone you can talk to

or count on. They’ve taken me places I would have never gone. Odyssey is a very non judgmental, full of good listeners, and they help to find resources that are good for you. Odyssey is more like family to me than a resource or a counselling service.

THE PLACE TO BE

CONSIDERATIONS FOR REAL ESTATE GROWTH 

Are there new amenities and developments being built nearby?

What’s the average income in the area? Is it increasing?

 How quickly is the area’s population increasing? 

What’s the forecasted economic growth for the area?

Is accessibility to the area being made easier?

Home Buyer’s Handbook Congratulations on deciding to purchase a home! The step by step process detailed here will get you off to a fantastic start to successfully being a superstar, informed home buyer.

1

When doing your research, remember to keep an open mind and not to get too high or too low about a particular home or area. There are plenty of options and opportunities out there! Having a checklist of what you want in your ideal home and neighbourhood will allow you to make comparisons when reviewing your options. Step 2 • pAGe 7

HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD?

How to Choose a REALTOR® Here are several points to consider when looking for a professional REALTOR®:

Review on geTTing sTaRTed:

Obtain recommendations from friends and business associates;

Check the reputation of the brokerage firm;

Go to several open houses and build a rapport with the agents, then choose the one you think is best for your needs;

Look for an agent who is familiar with the area you want to live in;

Review ads in your local newspaper;

2. Do your research on areas

Note the “For Sale” signs and jot down the key information as you drive through prospective neighbourhoods;

and homes you’re interested

Make sure the REALTOR® you choose is someone you feel comfortable with - someone who listens to your needs and

in – make a checklist of needs

is genuinely interested in helping you find the right home;

and wants

Verify the REALTOR®’s track record, e.g. how long has he/she been in business; what do previous customers think about his/her performance;

Verify the REALTOR®’s knowledge about the housing market and financing options;

Ask the REALTOR® bluntly what he/she will do for you;

Ask for references from buyers for whom the REALTOR® previously worked.

1. Get a mortgage pre-approval to get an idea of how much you can afford

3. Find a Sutton REALTOR® to guide and consult you on your real estate purchase adventure Step 3 • pAGe 11

friDAy niGhT SPEAkErS Drum cAfE The Drum Cafe was started in Johannesburg in 1996 by Warren Lieberman. It started as an actual Cafe where drumming was used in a relaxed environment to break down barriers, inspire people and bring people together. Moved by the experience of communal drumming in Africa, and the passion to unite different groups of people together in South Africa’s post apartheid era, Warren Liebermann developed a global team building and entertainment program along with leading motivational speakers, team builders and Africa’s top drummers.

Zone 19-A

The result 12 years later is a unique yet relevant program used by many of the Fortune 500 companies worldwide. “Drumming is something everyone, and every culture can relate to,” explains Warren. “The first thing you hear when you come into this world is the beat of your mother’s heartbeat. Drumming relaxes, energizes and motivates in a way most team building companies cannot explain.”

Every year, the MD 19A Spring Conference is one of the highlights of our year. Not only is it a chance to meet other lions, but since we were leos, we had been active in the contests & awards portion of the program. This year was no different, we participated in the website, bulletin, scrapbook, brochure, business card, ‘What Being a Lion Means to Me’ and uniform Lap Cheung delegation contests. In addition to contests, our own CP Kitty, Jay, and Sandy were involved President, 2007-08 with the registration for the conference.

We got a chance to wow the crowd and to be wow’ed during the contests and awards portion, our ‘Deal or No Deal’ uniform delegation routine was a big hit and Lion Lap’s ‘What Being a Lion Means to Me” speech routine should be an inspiration to us all. All the entries by the other Lions and Leos were so strong and we knew the competition will be tough.

We didn’t have to wait long to find out the results, six of us attended the banquet where we were treated to entertainment by the Gitwinksihlkw Nisga’a Lions. At the end of the night, the contests results were announced and we didn’t win 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 of the contests - website, scrapbook, bulletin, and uniform delegation. In addition, Sandy won a prize for the first-time delegates contest. To top off the night, Lion Kitty received her Melvin Jones from IPIP Ashok Mehta as well as an International President’s Appreciation award! That’s seven awards in one night! How many clubs can boast this accomplishment? Wow, let’s savour this ... and start thinking about how we’re going to surpass our results next year!
