Safety and Reminders You are now within a gated community, which provides 24 hour security. Outside, crime is very low in Manuel Antonio and Quepos; however, petty theft in the area is common. Never leave your belongings unattended. We recommend you make copies of your passport and other forms of identification to carry around and leave the following documents in the safe box in your bedroom: passport or other forms of identification, travel information, credit cards you will not be using and any extra cash. If you have chosen to rent a car during your stay in Costa Rica, please be aware of the road between Manuel Antonio and Quepos. It is a narrow, winding road. Please obey the speed limit and always be alert. Many people choose to walk on this road and can sometimes be hard to spot. Please do not forget to lock the doors when you leave your rental car and do not leave any valuables (cameras, laptops, wallet) in sight. Walking is a great form of exercise and a marvelous way to experience the natural beauty of the surroundings! Taking a walk on our property is always exciting, but if you feel that the hills are too steep or you need to get somewhere quickly, do not hesitate to ask a member of our staff to call our van to take you to your next destination. If you decide to take a walk in the jungle, on or off the property, please remain aware of your surroundings. We recommend that you let our staff know. Plan to be back by 5:00pm before sunset.
NATURE The one thing we can never apologize for is nature. We do everything we can to preserve the natural environment and bring the rainforest and its inhabitants as close to our guests as we can while respecting their need for safety. The flora and fauna is abundant in the common areas and near the villas. The villas themselves are sometimes visited by a variety of small insects (ants, bugs, mosquitoes) and small creatures (geckos, monkeys, raccoons, coatis or antoons, birds, iguanas, and bats rarely) but nothing large or dangerous. Tolerance of this ever-present animal population is a necessary compromise in order to enjoy it here. Human beings are not in the food chain of these jungle inhabitants and nothing is looking to bite you.

We are promoted as “luxury in the jungle.” We are not “Manhattan deluxe” or “Paris luxury”. We are in the rainforest. Avoid visits from our little friends to your villa by washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen counters after use. It also helps to keep sweet things and open food packages in the refrigerator, and food away from your balconies. If you are in the Premium Villas, we highly recommend you keep your open-shower doors closed and locked at all times. Remember to turn on your outside lights if you happen to leave your villa during the day and there is the possibility that you won‘t return until after dark. Those darn mosquitoes are everywhere, and love to come out at night. We suggest that you dim the lights in the evening.
Souvenirs from nature Please use the “only take memories” rule during your stay in Costa Rica. The Costa Rican people work together to conserve their land, which is why 33% of the rainforest is protected by national parks. Seashells, for example, are lovely, but by removing them from their natural environment, we disturb the ecosystem, causing the beautiful reefs to die. (Some superstitious people even say that it brings bad luck!). We ask that you use your camera to savor the memory and bring home incredible postcard photos.
Please do not feed the monkeys! You may find feeding the monkeys (and other wild animals) to be a thrilling experience, but you are not doing them any favors. Actually, you are harming them. Monkeys are highly vulnerable to diseases from human hands. Although not harmful to you, the bacteria on your hands can cause a monkey to die. Contrary to the stereotype, bananas are not the preferred food of monkeys in the wild and can be upsetting to their delicate digestive systems, especially bananas exposed to pesticides. In fact, feeding the monkeys interferes with their natural habits, upsetting the balance of their lifestyle. It also creates a dependency that diminishes the monkey‘s survival abilities. In addition, inconsistent feeding leads to aggressive behavior towards humans and other species.
Beaches The beaches in Manuel Antonio are considered by many to be the best in all of Costa Rica. If the ocean is something you are not accustomed to swimming in, here are some helpful hints to maximize your safety and enjoyment! • Flotation devices are not a substitution for swimming ability. Strong breezes and tide changes can cause dangerous drifting.

• Inexperienced swimmers should stay in shallow water. • Be careful around surfers. • Keep an eye on your children at ALL times. • Do not leave your belongings unattended at the public beaches. • Do not swim alone. • Be aware of the rip currents. Rip currents have a noticeable difference in water color, a gap in the breaking waves and foam or other objects moving steadily out to sea. If caught in a rip current, DON‘T PANIC!! Swim parallel to the shore until you‘re clear of the current. If you can‘t break free, let the rip current take you out beyond the breakers. Then swim diagonally toward shore. Never try to swim against the current.
Let’s talk about the sun! If you are reading this you are 9 degrees north of the equator: a place where solar energy is more concentrated year-round. No matter what your skin tone, remember that the sun can have many damaging effects. Start taking care of your body internally with sufficient hydration—meaning lots of water! A healthy diet, exercise, vitamin supplements, and the proper skin care products are also beneficial in protecting yourself. The sun is at its ultra violet peak between the hours of 10am and 2pm, so be sure to cover those continuously exposed areas of the face and neck, which are more prone to melanoma, especially during those times. If you haven‘t been exposed to the sun recently, use a sunscreen containing an SPF of 30 or more. The sun rises and sets at around the same time each day. The sun will rise between 5:30am and 6am. If you enjoy sleeping in a little later, we advise you to close the curtains in your villa before heading to bed. Expect the sun to set between 5:30pm and 6pm. The sunsets from our villas are phenomenal! The best place to view this treat for your body and soul is right outside on your balcony or with a cocktail at the pool!

Helpful Facts You Should Know
Language
Time
The official language of Costa Rica is Spanish, although many speak English.
Costa Rica is on Central Standard Time. Costa Rica does not observe daylight savings time, so the difference is an additional hour from April through October.
Currency The official currency of Costa Rica is the Colon, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. If you have denominations of $20 or less, most, if not all places, including taxis, will take the money and will give you change in colones. If you only have high denomination bills, you will need to go to the bank. U.S. dollars and travelers checks can be exchanged in banks between 9:00am and 3:00 pm Monday thru Friday and in most hotels. You will need to bring your passport with you in order to change currency. Major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted at most hotels and restaurants throughout the country. ATM‘s are available in the major tourist areas and there is one conveniently located across the street from the property, at the Promerica Bank complex. This ATM dispenses both colones and U.S. dollars. Most independent guides and tours only accept cash.
Electricity The standard in Costa Rica is the same as in the United States: 110 volts AC.
Exit Tax Be aware that you need to set aside $26 per person for the exit tax at the airport when leaving Costa Rica.
