Optimised for creators S22 Ultra had several ‘pro level’ features, including advanced camera settings, improved stylus tracking and RAW photo files. The device was also designed to optimise the Youtube creator and viewing experience. The Tab S8 was also shown to work with pro quality video editing software from Lumatouch. These announcements firmly position the Galaxy range as aspirational ‘Creative class’ products.

Seamless connectivity Several neat UX features were showcased, such as handover to a Windows device from the S22 and using the phone screen as a palette for digital artworking on the Tab S8. By upping interoperability between their own products and others, Samsung continues to bolster their ecosystem and smooth the device experience across touchpoints.

More open ecosystems The One UI 4 is a prime example of Samsung prioritising partnerships – across productivity with Microsoft and Google, and health with Strava and Adidas. By building a more collaborative and open ecosystem, and adopting more of Google’s services, Samsung is strengthening their positioning against Apple – particularly in wearables.

Eye on the future In step with current trends, the event was held in the metaverse. Around a hundred people explored a virtual Samsung store, built in Decentraland – a virtual world where land is bought as NFTs. Metaverse hype aside, Samsung seems to be placing serious bets on the future – its wallet announcement mentioned digital currencies, spelling a future for more mainstream decentralised financial services with more accessible UX.

Sustainable promises Using Ocean bound plastic in its supply chain was a big play for Samsung (take note Apple), but what could really make an impact was the commitment to continue support for four Android update cycles, and security updates – meaning less redundant devices over time. This commitment to long-term support and more sustainable materials is a departure from the status quo, and can make a real impact on e-waste at scale.
