GENEROSITY by Amber Jurgensen | Managing Editor

Gift of Giving

Merry Christmas from

Sometimes the gift that counts the most during the holiday season is one to someone in need. Don’t forget about these charitable organizations in the Plant City area when making your list this year.

Located in Plant City, Second Chance Boxer Rescue takes in-state animals, rehabilitates them and adopts them out to loving families in Hillsborough, Polk, Pasco, Citrus, Marion, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties. In the beginning, the nonprofit only rescued boxers, but later started Second Chance Friends for other companions. The name Second Chance doesn’t mean a second chance for the dogs, but one for humans to provide a safe and healthy home for the dogs, since most of the dogs that come to the rescue have been abused or neglected by their owners. WEBSITE: SaveABoxer.org CONTACT: info@saveaboxer.org

Friends in the Park Friends in the Park has become a community project of over 10 organizations and countless volunteers to feed the homeless or those in need in Plant City. Seven days a week, these big-hearted volunteers gather at the Winter Visitor Center, west of Historic Downtown, to serve meals and drinks. Other volunteers prepare the food and bring clothing and other supplies to the dinners. On any given day there can be as many as forty people fed. Unity in the Community made a monetary donation to the City of Plant City this year to move Friends in the Park from Veterans’ Memorial Monument Park to the Winter Visitor Center to provide an air-conditioned space out of the rain for patrons. FACEBOOK: Facebook.com/ ParkFriendsPlantCity CONTACT: Private message Barbara on the Friends in the Park Facebook page

Learn Tampa Bay Learn Tampa Bay offers tutoring services to parents and students in the Plant City area. Its primary patrons are those who speak English as a second language or are from migrant families. Students get homework help from volunteers and teachers, learn math skills on the computer, and have access to fiction and nonfiction books and workbooks. Parents learn English and other life management skills. The nonprofit is located east of Historic Downtown and is open five days a week to offer its services. It is part of a network of Family Literacy Academies funded and supported by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. WEBSITE: TampaBayLiteracy.org CONTACT: Angelica Ibarra, (813) 752-4010

PC Entertainment Plant City Entertainment Inc. is the community theater in the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. Besides providing shows and arts for its residents, Plant City Entertainment is also a training ground for many young people who have gone on to theater-related professions. In 2009, with the membership continuing to grow and after years of renting various venues around Plant City for performances, Plant City Entertainment was able to secure its own building in Historic Downtown. But the building is in need of repairs and the nonprofit is in the process of paying off its mortgage. Direct donations will help, but so can attendance to one of its many productions. To the south of the museum is a two-story train platform perfect for watching locomotives chug by. When: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11 Where: Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum, 102 N. Buy a wreath from a local craft or home goods store. Be sure to find one that will fit on your front door and has a number of firm branches for ornaments, bows and other add-ons. Select a wreath color scheme. For the holidays, gold, silver and red are sure to delight. Buy ornaments and decorations for the wreath. Carry the wreath with you to the store to make sure you aren’t buying too many or too few decorations. Get a variety of decorations, including ribbons, ornaments, florals and bows. Put the wreath on a flat surface to fluff up the branches. Place the ornaments and other decorations on the wreath, and adjust until satisfied. Carefully tie in or hang the ornaments on the wreath while the wreath is on a flat surface. To secure items, tie colorful ribbon around looser or heavier items, such as bigger ornaments. Hang on the door for guests to enjoy.

Plant City residents who enjoyed the spooks and screams of Sir Henry’s Haunted Trail are in for another treat from creator Zach Glaros this holiday season. Glaros, 24, will be opening The Christmas Trail for three weekends in December. Guests will be able to walk through 4.5 acres of lighted displays on South Frontage Road. Glaros has hosted Sir Henry’s at the property for two consecutive years, but this will be The Christmas Trail’s debut in the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. “It’s becoming a full-time gig,” Glaros said. “I wanted to bring what I did (in Lakeland) to Plant City.” In previous years, Glaros hosted The Christmas Trail, formerly called Zach’s Winter Wonderland, at his parents’ home in Lakeland. Last year, the attraction outgrew the location, allowing Glaros to bring it to his grandparents’ property in Plant City. “It’s always been my goal to take it on a larger, grander scale,” Glaros said. Glaros grew up decorating his parents’ backyard for the holidays, a tradition that has grown over the last 14 years. “I’ve always loved doing the decorating,” Glaros said. “I saved money for decorations. I started at age 10.” Because of his love for the holidays, Glaros wanted to create an attraction that would bring families together and allow them to create their own traditions without succumbing to the commercialization of the holidays. “It’s focused on lights, family traditions and Christmas memories,” Glaros said. “I love seeing the final product and appreciate everything that’s gone into it.” Like his popular Sir Henry’s

Zach Glaros said that creating his own decorations, including this nutcracker, took a week.

IF YOU GO What: The Christmas Trail When: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, to Sunday, Dec. 13; and Friday, Dec. 18, to Wednesday, Dec. 23 Where: 2837 S. Frontage Road Price: $5 per person; kids 4 and under are free

TRAIL THEMES The trail is about one quarter of a mile and filled with several thousand lights. In addition to themes, there will be fake snow, a reindeer stable, village and 12-foot tall dancing Christmas trees. Staff will be giving out candy along the way, and Santa will be walking the trail as well. • Santa’s Workshop • The North Pole • Gingerbread Forest • Walk to Bethlehem Trail, Glaros has broken up the Christmas Trail into different themes. Despite the work that goes in it, Glaros said the effort is his pleasure. “I love seeing the faces,” Glaros said. “It makes it all worthwhile.”

HOLIDAY TRADITION by Justin Kline | Sports Editor

Christmas Lane jingles into new location Longtime Dover holiday attraction Christmas Lane has grown this year — so much that it has moved to the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds. Anyone who knows Lane Wetherington knows that the man loves few things more than Christmas. And, when someone loves Christmas, they tend to buy many decorations. What separates Wetherington from the rest of the pack is that he’s been buying a lot of decorations for the past 30 years. It’s a necessity since he’s the founder and host of the annual Christmas Lane display, a winter wonderland of lights, holiday displays and entertainment that visitors can walk through. And when one buys a lot of decorations every year for three decades, they eventually run out of room. In Wetherington’s case, that calls for a move to the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds from his property in Dover. “It’s been a big jump and a big

milestone for Christmas Lane,” Wetherington said. “It’s going to expand, for a lot of people, the experience.” The idea came after the 2014 event, and it was further justified by Wetherington’s desire to have more parking spaces, food options and community visibility. In March, after the 2015 Strawberry Festival, he went to management with the idea. “We met with management and staff, and they formed a committee,” Wetherington said. “We all came to terms of agreement. They wanted to bring Christmas Lane to the festival grounds, and because it’s such a community-interactive event. It’s a great partnership with our festival and community.” Negotiations carried on until the middle of summer and, as

soon as both sides reached an agreement, Wetherington and his crew began the moving process. Because of the amount of displays and decorations he’s accrued, the move took until November to complete. “You’ve got 30 years of displays in a warehouse, and to try and pack all of that up and determine what you need, and how to transport it, now you have to take it six miles,” he said. “It’s a bit of a challenge.” Perhaps Wetherington’s favorite benefit of the move is that the festival grounds give him an enormous amount of space to work with, as well as some versatility. He’s added several new scenes to the display and constructed a “grand entrance,” the details of which he kept under wraps until opening night.

IF YOU GO WHEN: 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday until Jan. 3 WHERE: Florida Strawberry Festival, 2508 Oak Ave. COST: $5, ages 13 and older; $2, ages 4 to 12.

Several of the scenes and arrangements are indoors, which Wetherington wasn’t able to do in Dover. He has also added new concessions to the mix, such as nachos, French fries and cheese fries.

As always, Christmas Lane is open to the public seven nights a week and offers low prices for family-friendly entertainment. For more information, visit ChristmasLane.com. For an entertainment schedule visit PlantCityObserver.com.

CHRISTMASES PAST

Plant City residents are familiar with the usual Christmas festivities: the parade, Lights of Love and the many other holiday-themed events held around town that get people in the spirit. But Plant City has been celebrating the holidays for decades. With the help of the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center, the Plant City Times & Observer has compiled a collection of photographs to offer a peek at Christmases past. With elaborate parades, costumes, vehicles and even exotic animals in the fold, it’s safe to say that the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World has never slacked on Santa.
