ALOE FEROX

ALOE VERA

An attractive form of Aloe ferox is found in Kwazulu-Natal, particularly between the midlands and the coast in the Umkomaas and Umlaas river catchment areas. This used to be known as A. candelabrum and has subsequently been included in the species.

Aloe can be mat-forming or shrubby evergreen perennials, with rosettes of fleshy leaves and small tubular flowers in racemes or panicles

The bitter aloe will reach 2-3 metres in height with the leaves arranged in a rosette. The “A. Candelabrumform has an elegant shape with the leaf tips curving slightly downwards. The spines along the leaf edge are reddish in colour. Spines may also be present on upper and lower surfaces of the leaves as well. Young plants tend to be very spiny. This aloe forms a beautiful display and attracts many bird and insects to the flowers which in turn brings yet more birds to your garden.

Aristea

P la nt M a r ke t i n g I n ter na ti o n al L i mi te d

ARISTEA CAPITATA (MAJOR) The plants form thick clumps of long strap-shaped evergreen leaves, which stand upright to 1.5 metres. From October the flowering stems appear tall and strong above the leaves, often 8 or more stems grow from each clump.

Plant Marketing International Ltd Unit 4 Ellis Square Off Manor Road

The flowers are formed along the top part of the stem, tightly arranged on little branches forming small bunches of buds. There are a few hundred flowers along each stem, but they open only a few at a time and last for less than a day. The 6 bright blue petals of each flower open wide, creating a flat saucer of about 25mm across with the 3 yellow anthers and sword-shaped stigma in the center. By the afternoon the open flowers start to wilt and close with the petals twisting around each other. The flowers are pollinated by pollen collecting bees that are active early in the day. The old flowering stems remain upright for months after flowering and are quite attractive, turning a rich brown colour. Underground Aristea capitata has a rhizome from which the plants often resprout.

Grows in a fountain-like form with finetextured leaves spreading out over the ground. It has a soft, flowing, iridescent look and at first glance, it appears to be a sparkling, silvery green mound. The ‘glimmering’ is an illusion caused by finelined, deep-green borders and a silvery white stripe along the length of the foliage. Beautiful planted in masses in a woodland garden, or in a shady area. It is an excellent sedge to plant alongside angular plants to soften the landscape. If given sufficient moisture, Silk Tassel can tolerate sun; in shade or part shade it thrives in moist to average soil. Semihardy. 17

The flowers vary in size, up to 35 mm in diameter, are pure white and scented like orange blossom. A low growing form of C. macrocarpa, “Green carpet” is a popular groundcover plant which seldom grows more than knee height.

Fragrant white star-shaped flowers, red plum-like fruit. Does well near the ocean, makes a very attractive, dense groundcover. Fire-resistant for defensible space and at garden’s edge, adding colour and texture to both summer and autumn displays.

Chondropetalum & Coleonema

P l a n t M a r ke t i n g International Limited

COLEONEMA PULCHELLUM PINK CHONDROPETALUM TECTORUM This plant takes its species name from the Latin word tectorum, meaning roofing, which probably refers to its use a thatching material. Chondropetalum is a member of the restio family from the Western Cape region of South Africa. Plants are tender and need a sheltered, well-drained spot in full sun to grow well. In the UK plants are not reliably hardy and should be grown in pots and taken into the shelter of a cool greenhouse. Water well during the growing season but keep plants on the dry side during the winter months. Remove any old shoots as they turn brown and wither but avoid any other trimming.

Plant Marketing International Ltd

Fine heath-like foliage with masses of starry dark pink flowers in winter to early summer. Grows to 1.2m, but can easily be kept trimmed in any shape, low hedge, bonsai, topiary or informal border. A member of the buchu family, plant in well drained sunny position. Prune lightly in summer to shape, feed with slow release 3:1:5 or organic fertiliser and water regularly for best results.

CORDYLINE CHERRY SENSATION

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS CORAL

Known for its cherry pink leaves, which arch gracefully as the plant matures. It adds brilliant colour to mixed patio planters and brightens up the garden scene with all year round colour, particularly in winter.

Tough and less likely to burn in the sun and discolour in the cold. Trunk decreases and elongates in size with age. Responds well to ground pruning.

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS KASPER GREEN

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS KIWI

An attractive, low maintenance tree with broad, lime green foliage. The single trunk branches into a multi-headed plant with age, and a mature plant can reach up to 2 metres in height.

Cordyline Kiwi Dazzler is a striking variety with striped pink and copper hued foliage. Very attractive and a perfect centrepiece for a display.

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS PARADISE Palm-like, sub-tropical tree that grows with an upright habit, and will produce several heads with age. This cultivar has coral to salmon coloured leaves with bronze margins. Produces large panicles of small, sweet-scented flowers in late spring to summer. Best in full coastal sun to light shade - some shade protection necessary in hotter inland gardens. It is drought tolerant in coastal gardens but responds well to occasional to regular irrigation. Useful in dry gardens but also offers a tropical look. A great container plant. 20

Fast growing woody plant that can be grown as a palm-like shrub or a small tree. Its narrow, sword-like upper leaves remain erect while the lower leaves in the tip cluster droop. Panicles of fragrant white flowers appear in late spring, followed by small white or blue fruits.

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS REDSTAR A good ingredient for a jungle or tropical-themed garden, the cabbage palm is a striking foliage plant with its long, thin, arching, bronze-red leaves. As a smaller cultivar of the species, it does particularly well in pots on a patio, though it can also be used as summer bedding around the likes of a taller, flamboyant clump of cannas. Since it isn't totally hardy, it must be kept in a frost-free place over winter. If being grown outside permanently, it needs to be planted in a sheltered hot spot in soil that drains freely. If outside, the plant will need some protection over winter, so wrap it up in fleece to protect it from frosts. 21

Dietes

P la nt M a r ke t i n g I n ter na ti o n al L i mi te d

DIETES BICOLOR Clump-forming rhizomatous perennial plant with long sword-like pale-green leaves, growing from multiple fans at the base of the clump. This species belongs to the Iridaceae (Iris) family. It can form large clumps if left undisturbed for years. This species is common in horticulture in its native South Africa, where it is often used in public gardens, beautification of commercial premises and along roadsides. The blooms are yellow with three dark purple spots, each surrounded by an orange outline, and are followed by a capsule that may bend the flower stalks to the ground. Ripe seeds (dark brown in colour) are dispersed when the capsule dries and splits.

Plant Marketing International Ltd

The leaves of Dietes bicolor are narrower than those of Dietes grandiflora and Dietes iridioides, and tend to arch more.

Ficus

P la nt M a r ke t i n g I n ter na ti o n al L i mi te d FICUS ELASTICA BURGUNDY It is a large tree in the banyan group of figs, growing to 30–40 metres (98–130 ft) (rarely up to 60 metres or 200 feet) tall, with a stout trunk up to 2 metres (6.6 ft) in diameter. The trunk develops aerial and buttressing roots to anchor it in the soil and help support heavy branches. It has broad shiny oval leaves 10–35 centimetres (3.9–14 in) long and 5–15 centimetres (2.0–5.9 in) broad; leaf size is largest on young plants (occasionally to 45 centimetres or 18 inches long), much smaller on old trees (typically 10 centimetres or 3.9 inches long). The leaves develop inside a sheath at the apical meristem, which grows larger as the new leaf develops. When it is mature, it unfurls and the sheath drops off the plant. Inside the new leaf, another immature leaf is waiting to develop.

(syn. Ficus pandurata), commonly known as the fiddle-leaf fig, is a species of fig tree, native to western Africa, from Cameroon west to Sierra Leone. It grows in lowland tropical rainforest. It is a banyan fig (Ficus subgenus Urostigma) that commonly starts life as an epiphyte high in the crown of another tree; it then sends roots down to the ground which envelop the trunk of the host tree and slowly strangle it. It can also grow as a free-standing tree on its own, growing up to 12–15 m (39– 49 ft) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, but often with a broad apex and narrow middle, resembling a lyre or fiddle; they are up to 45 cm (18 in) long and 30 cm (12 in) broad, though usually smaller, with a leathery texture, prominent veins and a wavy margin. The fruit is a green fig 2.5-3 cm (1-¼ in) diameter.

They bear racemes of small, sixtepalled semi-spherical to bellshaped, pinkish white, lilac or white flowers on leafless stems in late summer followed by glossy round fruits. Semi-hardy.

An evergreen, tufted perennial with dark green, strap-shaped leaves. In late summer it produces tall stems with white, bell-shaped flowers that later turn into oblong, voilet-blue fruit.

OPHIOPOGON JABURAN VITTATUS This most attractive, compact, grassy-looking perennial forms arching clumps of neat, cream and green striped foliage. Because it is not reliably hardy, it is best grown on its own in a container and makes a superb patio plant that adds foliage interest to a group of perennials or shrubs grown for all-year-round effect. In mild areas, it can live outside permanently and looks good grown with grasses and foliage plants or in an evergreen border. It is also known as ‘Variegatus’.

PHILODENDRON SELLOUM SUPER ATOM

Lovely tight clusters of bright green lancelike foliage. Hybrid, low growing, clumping tender perennial shrub, this philodendron is ‘self heading’, which means that it does not climb or sprawl like a vine. The leaves are broadly oval or truly lance-shaped, emerging a light yellow or bright chartreuse. They slowly mature to a deeper yellow-green, and oldest leaves on the lowest part of the plant are a duller mid-green. Flowers can arise during the warm months at anytime, being a greenish-yellow, cloak-like wrapping spathe around a white, finger-like spadix. Grow in well-draining, moist, acidy, fertile soils in partial shade. Too much light and the leaves are whitish-yellow or simply brown. Too low humidity or soil moisture can cause leaf browning, too, but also note that philodendrons do not like soggy or cold soils. Brings a cheerful brightness to shady nooks under large trees, building courtyards or containers in warm, frost-free regions, but is an excellent houseplant in bright, warm rooms. All parts of philodendron leaves and stems are poisonous, and the juices can cause skin irritation in some people.

SPATHIPHYLLUM SUNSHINE DREAM Spathiphyllum is a genus of about 40 species of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia. Certain species of Spathiphyllum are commonly known as Spath or Peace Lilies.

Plant Marketing International Ltd Unit 4 Ellis Square Off Manor Road Selsey, West Sussex PO20 0AY United Kingdom T: +44 (0)1243 573985

They are evergreen herbaceous perennial plants with large leaves 12–65 cm long and 3– 25 cm broad. The flowers are produced in a spadix, surrounded by a 10–30 cm long, white, yellowish, or greenish spathe. The plant does not need large amounts of light or water to survive.

Several species are popular indoor houseplants. Spathiphyllum cleans indoor air of many environmental contaminants, including benzene, formaldehyde, and other pollutants. It cleans best at one plant per 10m. It lives best in shade and needs little sunlight to thrive. It is watered approximately once a week. The soil is best left moist but only needs watering if the soil is dry.

Syngonium Syngonium is a genus of about 36 species of flowering plants in the family Araceæ, native to tropical rain forests in Central and South America. They are woody vines growing to heights of 10–20 m or more in trees. They have leaves that change shape according to the plant’s stage of growth, and adult leaf forms are often much more lobed than the juvenile forms usually seen on small house plants. Syngonium species are often grown as house plants, usually only in the juvenile foliage stages. For successful growth, a winter minimum temperature 16°C to 18°C must be maintained, rising to 20°C to 30°C during the growing season. They require high humidity, including misting the leaves regularly, and good light, but not direct sunlight; they will tolerate low light levels. Water freely from spring to autumn, sparingly in winter. Feed regularly in spring and summer. If juvenile foliage is preferred, cut off all the climbing stems that develop — the plant will remain bushy,
