It is a good thing to grow and keep moving. As for the growing bit, we have done so very literally with this, our seventh edition of Monki Magazine. Welcome to our all new, big and beautiful Travel Issue. Having doubled in size and volume, we hope it will also give you twice the reading pleasure. At least... So where will our journey go? All around the world, no less, with the best tour guides you could conceivably wish for: Air will show us around Paris, The Horrors guide us through London, Susie Bubble and Indigo Clarke let us take a peek inside their luggage, Facehunter Yvan Rodic shows us the pictures in his travel diary and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine has a tale to tell about the best borscht in New York City. Our Travel Issue takes us to Texan motels, the streets of Hong Kong and all the way to the beaches of India. And you don’t even have to get off the sofa to go on this trip, just turn the pages and come along…

Photographer Claudia Grassl in Dallas, Texas
claudia grassl there are places that leave such a lasting impression that they will keep on luring you back for the rest of your life. This is what Texas has done to Claudia Grassl with its landscapes, endless roads and big skies. Whenever she goes back there she is reminded of her first visit just after she had finished school to work on a project about American youth culture. Meanwhile Claudia has made a habit of commuting regularly between Germany and Texas, and her interest in the country’s youth culture has become a recurring theme of her documentary-style photography. One of her chosen hobbies is to explore her second homeland the American way by going on nocturnal car cruises. On these outings she has not only learnt to know and love the neon signs and eighties skylines, but also, quite handily for us, has aquired a knowledge of the best motels of the Lone Star State and could pick the best locations for our shoot. We assume that she usually visits at the “Fuel City” gas station late at night, because she has tipped us off to the fact that they do the best tacos ever. We imagine her eating them wearing her favourite item, those “really cool cowboy boots with flowers all in pink and red I bought in this cool vintage store called Dolly Python.”
Illustrator Jenny Mörtsell at Fisherman’s warf, San Francisco
jenny mörtsell when we think of Jenny Mörtsell’s pictures taking shape, it’s tempting to imagine a scene out of a fairy tale that might well be called Jenny and her Magic Pencils. The images that pour forth from her crayons and pencils have little to do with anything as mundane as drawing or as trivial as illustration. There is clearly some magic at play. The human beings that are brought to life by her delicate and deft lines seem more expressive than any photograph, and there is a plasticity to the things she draws that makes you want to physically lift them out of the picture and use them. It seems Jenny is partial to believing in magic herself, as her favourite souvenir from her travels is a little figurine teller brought back from Tokyo that answers questions by a nod or a shake of the head. She likes to consult him on all the essential choices in life. However, when it came to deciding whether she should move from her native Sweden to New York, she relied on her own instinct: “The first time I was there I hated it and felt everything was so fake. But the second time I went I felt very calm for the first time in my life. The fast pace and myriads of things going on had some kind of reverse effect on me. And now I live here!” We must assume that the New York supermarkets were up to her standards. After all she puts supermarkets at the top of her list of sights to seek out whenever she explores a new city. For this issue Jenny Mörtsell has captured the spirit of exceptional women such as Florence Welch thanks to the magic powers of her pencils.

Photographer Rosa Rendl in Karachi, Pakistan
daniela bily when our art director Daniela takes some time off from her computer, from Photoshop and InDesign, colour values and font sizes, she always finds herself drawn to the seaside. The shifting sand dune Pyla on the French Atlantic coast exerts a special pull on this 28-year-old. After all, what could be more conducive to switching off than rolling down sandy hills? Even more so when there is an equal-sized hill of work to get away from in your holidays. Apart from Monki Magazine, Daniela has to handle the art direction for international fashion mags INDIE and material girl. Her nearlegendary zen-like calm doesn’t just serve her well in the face of her impossibly high work rate, but also out on the road, especially when she follows her passion for testing any kinds of food that foreign countries have to offer. The fact that the planning stage of each new issue of Monki takes her from her Vienna office to Sweden is fine by her. She claims that Scandinavians not only speak the most beautiful languages and possess an unfailing sense of fashion, they also have the most enviable looks. Having toiled for untold hours over the magnificent new Monki magazine design, we assume her next rewarding journey to the sea is imminent. Happy rolling in the dunes, Daniela!
living in an international melting pot like London has its upsides. One of the most obvious: To be in one of the greatest cities on the planet. Another is to be in a place that attracts the most amusing eccentrics, the most interesting artists and the best designers on Earth. This is where friendships are forged that will link you to a global network of people. Recently, our photographer Rosa made use of one of these international friendships by visiting a friend who had moved back to her native Pakistan. This monthlong trip turned into one of Rosa’s most formative experiences so far. “I was very inspired by Pakistan. First of all, the traditional menswear is highly elaborate in my eyes. And also to see the style of the people in the villages was fascinating. Disregarding their poor standard of living, they dressed in vivid colours, with glittery embroideries, amazing fabrics, etc. They made for a beautiful sight in the midst of a rather grey and dusty landscape.” But whenever Rosa, in spite of all her exciting travels and her hectic life as a fashion photographer in high demand with her own studio in Dalston, feels a pang of homesickness, she longs for the one sight that warms the cockles of even the most modern-minded of native Austrians: the glorious alpine mountainside.

visit monki’s new london store
it has long been the destination of choice for anyone who finds the high street a bit of a drag, and now there’s another great reason to visit Carnaby Street: A new Monki flagship store opened its unconventional doors on 24 February. The Selfridges concession, although small, has been a huge success, and the new store brings the full Monki experience to the fans in the form of two storey’s worth of its latest store concept, The Sea of Scallops. The visitor finds herself in a cave of wonders deep under the sea, filled with sunken carousels, sea monsters, floating jellyfish, and of course wave upon wave of Monki’s signature quirky fashion pieces. One thing you can say for certain: You won’t find anything quite like it in London.

to far away places. fashion director annika urbansdotter allows us a peek backstage, literally in this case.
A different world “In this campaign the first mood-board came from a series of images from old 18th century theatres. Since the theme of this Monki issue is travelling, I had a notion of how people travel into different worlds as they watch a performance. The Monki world has this amazing map that tells a story of a number of wonderful places to go.”
Spinning wheels “With the old theatre machinery, colourful backdrops, waves, islands and trees made of cardboard one travels from one world to another by pulling a rope or spinning a wheel behind the stage.”

Suprematism “What I love about the current collection is that it is quite sophisticated and stylish and yet manages to keep the strong Monki character in its details and overall styles. It has that playfulness with geometrical forms and shapes, like the art movement Suprematism, which the collection is named after.”
Patterned trousers “The quite complicated patterns really grew on me as we worked with the styles on set during the photo shoot. By the end of the day I was totally in love with them. I will spend my spring in these patterned outfits. The patterned trousers, I adore them ...”

there’s one city in this world where pretty much every young fellow is in a band. There’s one band in this city that over the past few years has become the coolest of its kind and their members something akin to local icons: London’s The Horrors. Guitarist Joshua wouldn’t have it any other way: “We’ve been everywhere, and I can’t find anywhere like London. I always get sad when I leave and always incredibly happy when I come back.” And how do these five punk geniuses experience the city to which they moved as teens in search of excitement, the place where they started making music? “London’s so transient, it’s so ever changing. That keeps it fresh.” says Joshua and tells us about the places there that are special to him…

picture the world a p h o t o d i a r y b y y va n ro d i c yvan rodic is the name of the young man known and adored as “facehunter” throughout the style-obsessed end of the blogosphere. Naturally, topping the list of most-read street style blogs as one of the originators of the format and publishing a globally successful book of his own photographs could never be enough for him. On his other site YvanRodic.com, this restless globetrotter exhibits unique impressions that he has managed to capture among, around or even far away from the beautifully dressed people of the world’s capital cities; from New York fashion week to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. For our travel issue he has dug up some of his favourite snaps from his Visual Diary.

But (loses track) I don’t even think that was your question?
_ Is there anything you’re afraid of? (asks her two dancers) Am I afraid of anything? I was going to say I am afraid of being misrepresented, but I am all the time. So no. I’m not afraid of anything.
_ That’s fine. But did you have these energies from an early age, some kind of predisposition to being daring or eccentric? Definitely, I would stand up in the middle of class and question the teachers. Not that I was smarter than them, but I was just like: Why are you teaching like this? It’s not working! We’re not interested! You’re not making it any better!
_ We’re in Vienna right now. What do you think of Sigmund Freud? I think he should have become one of the Viennese Actionists. I think Freud as a

_ You once called yourself a control freak. What is it like to work with Peaches? (laughs) I don’t know, ask these girls! (pointing at her dancers). But we’re all control freaks. I just work with other control freaks. That way I know I don’t have to control their control freakness and I can just leave it to them. It’s nice that I know that these people will take care of their own vision. I don’t want people to just go: “That’s good, okay...” You know? They have to bring something to it, cause then it becomes something else, whether it’s a band, whether it’s dancers, whether it’s your partner in bed. _ You are often perceived as a feminist icon. Are you okay with that? In the end yes, I am a feminist but I don’t try and say it, because I think it’s almost just preaching to the converted once you use that word. So I just like to call myself a humanist, really. _ Is shocking people gender-specific? I don’t really try and shock, I’m just questioning and wondering why something would be shocking to somebody, what the point is of that something being shocking and why that would be interesting. _ Can words be nasty? Yeah, you can get hurt… of course you can get hurt by words. _ But is there pleasure in saying nasty words? Sure, it’s liberating to say “fuck” or “I wanna shove my big dick in your hole” or whatever.
“Beauty is the imperfection that drives you to a person.“
_ What shocks you in a good or bad way? What shocks me in a bad way is Disney.
Thou shalt question authorities. Thou shalt not follow organised religion. Thou shalt enjoy thy own body. _ What is beauty? Beauty is the imperfection that drives you to a person. _ It might sound like an obvious question, but what is sex? It’s something that’s very important and you have to really experience and be a part of yourself to understand it, cause it’s always gonna come up.
_ What is art? _ Do guys react to your art differently? I mean, let’s talk about... I do want us to Art is a big fart! Best interview ever. I love be equal. And I want us to feel the same you guys. way about each other. And of course _ You worked on your own theatre women rule, but there’s been like thousands and thousands of years of productions “Peaches Christ Superstar” and men trying to prove that they are a “Peaches Does Herself”. So truly it’s step behind. But it’s exciting because of the staging you can do. their responsibility. _ What do girls have to learn? Well, you are already. You’re asking these questions. You’re obviously intellectuals. You just need to... just need to act on things, you know? _ Are these the teachings of Peaches? True teachings. _ If you had three commandments carved in stone, what would they be?
_ Do you think Peaches is a constant performative act? Yeah, I do, the worst way of saying it is: It’s a brand. The best way of saying it is: It’s just what I want it to be. And people can eat it. _ But it’s something you’re in control of? Yes, that’s what’s so great. I no longer have a label, Peaches is just whatever I want to do.

for the french band AIR travelling the world is not enough. On their new album “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” they once again take us to different spheres and up to the moon. Paying tribute to the legendary silent movie of the same name, often dubbed the first ever science fiction film, AIR’s brilliant album opens a world of wonders to us, just as Georges Méliès did with his images. “When you compose music, you travel into your desires, your wishes of seduction, your dreams.” says Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Since there is only one city in the world that really suits such a sensual trip, he unsurprisingly picks his hometown Paris as his travel recommendation. And how does he suggest we best make new friends there? “You should speak about love. Seduction is a part of the Parisian world.” Mon Dieu! Our knees have just turned to jelly.

_ Is there a city where you instantly felt at home the very first time you were there? New York, just because the city is so similar to London. It is the only place that I could see myself living in if I decided to move away from London. _ Is there a special sight or place you visit every single time you are in a certain city? Sounds odd but it’s the Museum of History in Hong Kong. I wouldn’t consider myself a true Hong Kong person as I was born in London, but I do like taking my boyfriend there just so he can get a crash course on the history of this peculiar ex-British colony.
she calls herself a fashion outsider, while
most people would call her,
well, the exact opposite. british born chinese susanna lau, tellingly known as susie bubble, runs one of the most widely read blogs. and even though she has lived in london practically all her life, travelling must be in her genes: her parents met at an airport.
_ Please tell us your favourite travel anecdote! All of my travelling seems to have blurred into one, but I suppose my memories of trips to Tokyo are the most vivid. I loved stumbling into the Kita Kore building in Koenji for the first time as it was so different from the rest of Tokyo. You go down this seedy alleyway with Japanese girly bars and sleazy karaoke joints and then you find this dilapidated building made out of corrugated iron where there are five boutiques in one selling DIY, vintage and just about the zaniest fashion you can find. _ Fashionwise, are there any countries that you consider most progressive in style? Tokyo for sure. In terms of street style, shopping and the general culture of Japan, it’s impossible not to be inspired. I’ve yet to go to South American countries though. Next on my list are Buenos Aires and Mexico City where I hope I’ll find something special.
_ Do you have some favourite souvenir you brought home with you? I can tell you about a thing that I didn’t bring home. I saw this amazing feather dreamcatcher at a flea market in Mon-treal. It was huge. I circled around it five times before deciding that my boyfriend would probably be a bit freaked out by the amount of feathers it had, so I had to let it go. _ Which imaginary place would you love to visit? The Disney film Fantasia, the bit where they play The Pastoral Symphony by Beethoven in an Ancient Greek world.

working for the PR agency Girault-Totem, we always did a showroom in Paris. One day, we had been on the road for 15 hours, we arrived in Paris and went to a Dior Homme cocktail without changing our clothes. We were really tired and when one of us spotted the designer, he blurted “Oh look, there is Hedi Slimane!” All of a sudden, all eyes of the whole well-dressed chic Parisian crowd were on us – a large group of tired looking, unkempt Germans in jogging clothes. We died of shame. _ Is there a special sight or place that you visit every single time you are in a certain city? I have my local spots everywhere. In Berlin, I always visit RSVP and Yasmine Elgarafi who is selling her best finds at her eponymous store. I love going to the beach in Tisvildeleje close to Copenhagen, there is an ice cream booth on the beach that sells the world’s biggest ice cream cones. In Paris, I always go to Shine in Rue Debelleyme. commuting in both berlin and new york is part of rike döpp’s every day life.

_ You live between Berlin and New York. How do you cope with travel stealing so much of your time? I have to be well organised! I am always carrying my phone, laptop and a simple notebook with me. Some things need to be written down! _ Was there a special moment when you started to really feel at home in New York? I moved to the West Village recently. My style is very Scandinavian, and I have repainted the whole apartment step by step. One Saturday, I went to Green Depot again, where I always buy my paints. The guy greeted me with “You again! You want something grey as always?” _ Please tell us your favourite travel anecdote! A really long time ago, when I was still
_ Fashionwise, are there any countries that you consider most progressive in style? That’s hard to say. I love the clear silhouettes in Scandinavia, French chic and the polished New York look. I am very German, though. I love accentuated lines and grey/black/white combined with bold colours. _ Which imaginary place would you love to visit? If I could, I would visit Totoro, I love all Studio Ghibli films.

_ Is there a city where you instantly felt at home the very first time you were there? Los Angeles. In the beginning I was concerned that I wouldn’t like it too much over there, but my boyfriend really wanted to go and stay there for a while. As we left the airport, it was January, after some very cold and icy weeks in New York, I instantly had this “this is just the right place to be” feeling. I have talked it through with friends a lot, but I think you can strip it down to something very simple: palm trees. There are palm trees all over the place. _ Fashionwise, are there any countries that you consider most progressive in style? If the internet was a country, I would rate it as the most progressive place in style terms, the place to get the most inspiration, I guess. _ Do you have some favourite souvenir that you brought home with you? Maybe the fluffy grey jacket that makes me look like a hairy blowfish is my favourite souvenir ever.

tales to tell, apart from letting us know why we shouldn’t miss the movie kin-dza-dza.
_ Please tell us your favourite travel anecdote! There was that equally weird and wonderful moment when I already had all my stuff checked in at the airport in Berlin and decided not to take the flight after all and stay a bit longer because I was really in love and felt incredibly heartbroken at the same time. I decided the only remedy was to stay. When I got my stuff back, just for a second I felt like the most spontaneous and romantic person on Earth. And yes, it was worth it! _ How do you like to kill time waiting in airports...? Usually, I try not to get there too early. If it still happens, I make sure not to pass security control until the last minute to avoid the feeling of being trapped and locked in.
_ Which imaginary place would you love to visit? The desert planet Plük in the Kin-dza-dza galaxy! People there have telepathic abilities and the only two words normally used in their culture are “ku” and “kyu”, but they can quickly adapt to understand and speak Russian! You should watch the movie: Kin-dza-dza.

with sand floors built on the beach. I also love Hakone, the forests and temples are absolutely beautiful set by a lake that overlooks Mount Fuji. _ How do you like to kill time waiting in airports? When I’m at an airport I have an almost pathological urge to shop for make-up! I totally kill time at the cosmetics counters of Chanel, MAC and NARS buying lipstick, nail polish and moisturisers. I also love to buy perfume. _ Is there a city where you instantly felt at home the very first time you were there? Tokyo! Because it’s manic, wild, crazy cartoon-like, colourful – everything a city should be and all the things that make me feel at home!
judging by the publications indigo clarke has worked for, from vogue to w magazine, you would expect her to spend her life flitting around be-tween the fashion capitals of the world. we asked the new york-based fashion journalist about her travelling habits, apart from hopping from one fashion show to another.
_ Please tell us your favourite travel anecdote! Growing up in Sydney, Australia, I’ve had so many magical beach moments. But one that stands out in particular happened last year while I was on holiday in Costa Rica. My friends and I swam out at midnight by a full moon to their yacht that was anchored at Mal Pais, and as we swam, the ocean lit up with bioluminescence. Each stroke we took illuminated the water in the most incredible, bizarre way. The experience was beautiful, magical and totally unexpected, just what travelling to a new place should be! _ Is there a special sight or place you will visit every single time you are in a certain country? Every time I visit Japan I love to go to Hayama Beach, where in summer there are these amazing shack-like reggae bars
_ Fashionwise, are there any countries that you consider most inspirational? All the cities I’ve lived in and visited have their own style: London for vintage and eccentric fashion, NYC for downtown manicured cool, Paris for effortless chic, Stockholm sophisticated quirky-cool, Sydney bohemian-beachy, Tokyo insane and over the top! _ Which imaginary place would you love to visit? I’d visit The Magic Faraway Tree! The Faraway Tree is a book by Enid Blyton I was crazy about when I was little.

When workin’ girls travel they traded the scandinavian cold for sandy beaches, beloved monkis for real elephants and snow boots for sandals. for a short time at least. monki pr manager nor toma took off to india to absorb the vivid spirit of this colourful continent. minna guan who works as a buyer for the monki accessories department collected inspirations and nicknacks on her recent city trips from new york to tokyo. luckily they both remembered to send back some amazing impressions of their – for a change – non-business trips.

_ Which characteristic of yours is most useful when travelling? Curiosity. _ What are you really good at? Forecast engineering. _ What exactly is your job at Monki and which part of it do you like most? I’m the PR manager at Monki and part of the concept group. I enjoy it so much. Everything from the spaced out brainstorms, to the instant deep dives into the lives of people I meet worldwide. But the most epic part of work is simply spending time with the charms at the office. _ The most fascinating thing about India? The liveliness and spirit. _ What about Indian fashion – what did you observe? The colours, the energy and the way of life are mind-blowing. The contradictions are so eye-catching; subtle henna ornaments but loud fabrics, flowers lying in dirt, excessive jewelry among cows strolling on the streets. _ Will you take a souvenir back home with you? Mainly think-backs and think-tanks, and a dive certificate. _ Do you already have any plans where you will travel to next? Of course, loads! I want to get back to San Francisco and Tokyo again, but also visit Cape Town and Borneo, and Nepal, and…
g u a n
_ Which characteristic of yours is most useful when travelling? I think it must be my calmness – although only when it comes to things not concerning time. I have this “always-be-30minutes-earlier-than-on-time” character in me. This is actually a positive thing but not in the society of time optimists. _ What are you really good at? Having fun! _ What exactly is your job at Monki and which part of it is it you like most? I’m working as a buyer for the Monki Accessories department. It’s really great to have the chance to travel and explore different parts of the world but also to be able to work with really inspiring and creative colleagues. _ The most fascinating place you’ve been to? There are so many! Although there are four cities that I definitely want to spend more time in. New York and LA for the nice atmosphere and, not be forgotten: the best shopping! Seoul – this is a new favorite city! And last but definitely not least: Tokyo – for just being Tokyo and fantastic! _ Do you often bring souvenirs back home? I never bring back any typical souvenirs but I do bring back a lot of other things from my trips… Some clothes, but also plush toys, key chains and mini figures from Kid Robot, Kiddyland or any other toy store. _ Do you already have any plans where you will travel to next? Next trip will be Tokyo with the accessories team! It’s been quite a long time since I was in Tokyo, so I’m really looking forward to it!

it is a universally acknowledged fact that the best way to explore a foreign city is to get a friendly local to show you around. they will know all the hidden treasures no guide would ever take you to, reveal their favourite bars and point out the one special spot with the most spectacular view that nobody has heard of. wouldn’t it be great to know somebody like this in every city? well, you do now! carina and tanja from austria wanted to combine everything they are passionate about, fascinating people, travelling, design, fashion, photography, music, culinary delights and hidden authentic places, and share all this with fellow urban nomads. in 2010 they founded nectar & pulse as a resource to supply travellers with local soul-mates from new york to tel aviv and created customisable travel guides. let’s get five of their ambassadors to take us on a tour to spend the perfect 24 hours in each of their hometowns.

“waking up to good weather is great. Make the most of it by soaking up the sunshine as you walk through the city. Slowly wander down Passeig Sant Joan and find your way to brunch. Picnic is a great place for a late morning meal (accompanied by a glass of Cava, of course!). Some of my must-stop shops are Doshaburi, The Outpost and Vincon. Late afternoon is the perfect time for a drink on the rooftop of Hotel 1898. After a sushi dinner at Kibuka the perfect way to wrap up a great day is at Betty Ford’s which has great cocktails. It’s the perfect place to spend some time with friends and get to know new people working in the creative industries over a drink and a laugh!”
