Punk Glitter Disco Madness with The Adicts By Lexa Vonn

At The Monty Bar Los Angeles

Nightlife in L.A. has become seriously limited in the last several years for people who don’t give a damn about networking with slews of phony elitist entertainment industry wanna-bes at “VIP” bars, dodging LAPD bullets on Hollywood blvd or dealing with race riots on the Sunset Strip. Let’s face it, Hollywood is dead for anyone the least bit cool. I don’t like to throw my scene Queen title around cause it’s pretentious for one to do so, but since I am referred to as punk Goth royalty, I’m going to claim it this time and make the call… Hollywood is DEAD!

So, what does that mean for the kids who just wanna dance, party and model their latest fashion creations? It means we’re underground again, just as Billy Idol’s guitarist Steve Stevens told me would happen in our interview about such matters last year. If you want to have a good time, it’s going to be based more around finding the event than the location and those locations will likely be art galleries, dive bars and other less obvious spots. One bar that is supporting the budding revival of punk disco is The Monty Bar in downtown L.A. Looking like a clubhouse with a moose head mounted on the wall and pub style bar, the Monty is the host of Pure Trash, a night of punk, glitter, Goth, metal and oldies that often features special guest DJs.

Last Friday, Pete Dee and Monkey from legendary British punk band The Adicts took over the DJ stage at Pure Trash and I decided to join them. The Adicts have always been one of my favorite live bands with their colorful theatrics and old school punk tunes and I must say, the boys throw as good of a party when spinning other people’s records, too. I had a great time at this bar from the moment I got there to the very last song. The staff is young and laid back and there was no one in the crowd I encountered with a bad attitude. In fact, that’s the most people I’ve seen turn out for a DJ night in a looong time. The Monty was literally at capacity and no one was on their fucking phones cause they were all dancing! Monkey got down on the dance floor with everyone creating a disco mosh pit of 70’s and 80’s glitter punk madness as Clockwork Orange played on a movie screen against the back wall and Pete spun lots of Sex Pistols, T-Rex, New York Dolls and everything else that makes me feel happy including one of my all time favorite songs, “Teenage Kicks” by the Undertones. I spent most of the night on the stage dancing and Viva cheerleading the crowd on.

Monkey and Pete Dee of The Adicts spinning the best in old school punk, glam and metal…

There were streamers, glitter rockets, card games and other Adicts party favors being tossed into the crowd the same way they do when they play live. They even played us a new song they’d wrote just the day before. Who doesn’t like being privy to popping song virginity? It felt like New Year’s Eve or some kind of inauguration ball with everyone getting to dance and take pics with the Prince of Punk. Monkey is truly the people’s prom king, always going above and beyond to entertain and rejoice with everyone who wants to join in the dance, but I got the best one when he took a break from the crowd and joined me for a dance on the DJ stage. Viva la Revolution!

There’s no rules with makeup. Let your face be a canvas of expression. #LexaSays Spawning off the last of the Goth/Metal era at the turn of the Millennium, New Necromantic goes back in time adding bold neon makeup, bright hair, old school punk street style and lots of glitter! Inspired by the New Romantic movement of the early 80ʼs, we wanted to recreate the fantasy-like imagery that birthed MTVʼs early fashion savvy musical icons for the economically strained DIY GEN of NOW. 7

“Anything goes with New Necromantic,” says Plastics designer, Lexa Vonn. “I blend both new and vintage pieces from any time period and then redesign them with my own artistic flare to create something unique and timeless. Youth culture has no strong identity at the moment. With the over saturation of Internet and the suffering music industry, itʼs as if weʼre floating round the tin can David Bowie spoke of in Space Oddity. Thereʼs no real scene or set of ideals, no subculture making history. But there is a new crop of kids disillusioned by the Selfie Generation and thirsting for the records, discos and rock nʼ roll! And thatʼs exactly what New Necromantic means. Itʼs uniting the past with the future through the romance of nostalgia. Post Goth. Weʼre so dead, weʼre alive again.” lorem ipsum :: [Date]

I always discover my models while walking through the scenes of real life, as I like to channel the subjects inner character rather than work with a professional who comes with a prescribed set of poses. I find them anywhere, really… Subway stations, nightclubs, cosmetic stores, gas stations. Creating an alternate personality from start to finish; hair, makeup, custom designed clothes and art direction. It’s all done at #PlasticsFactory. – Lexa Vonn

The city of West Hollywood celebrated the 40th Anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at this year’s “Carnaval” Halloween parade on Santa Monica blvd. The annual WEHO costume festival is one of the largest gatherings in the world, attracting over a million party-goers a year. Rocky Horror is the longest running film in history. It seemed only fitting that the two events merged in honor of one another.

This year’s festivities included a karaoke infused performance by legendary local RHPS live cast, Sins of the Flesh and a surprise appearance by Boy George. Looking lovely as ever in GOLD, Boy George played a stripped down acoustic set, which included covers of David Bowie’s “Starman” and T-Rex’s “Bang a Gong.” Along with the notorious Culture Club 80s hits “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me?” was the more serious political hymn, “Love Is Bigger Than War.” True dat, but is it bigger than these GOLD platform boots I found towards the end of the evening at the corner of Tim Curry is presented with a key to the city of West Hollywood. 18

La Cienega and Santa Monica? They were just sitting there all alone, size 10. I’m not quite sure how one loses a laced up platform boot, let alone two, but it is Halloween in Hollywood. I suppose STRANGER things have happened.

Such as the fact that Sid Vicious has entered the world of household brand pop-culture. After bringing Mr. Vicious through the camera at Plastics Factory, I met up with him for a stroll down Santa Monica and can conclude that he’s now in the league of Mickey Mouse. Sid was recognized by every age group and ethnicity with smiles, high fives and Sex Pistols hollers, including the on duty police officers who requested a photo with him. Or, the fact that when I’m dressed as Boy George, I only attracted women. It didn’t surprise me much as I’ve never viewed George’s makeup, even in the 80s, to be of a feminine nature. One needs to look no further than the glam metal scene of the late 80s to know that boys in makeup have always gotten the most girls. Being Boy George was fun for a refreshing change from the constant male sexual advances I get daily as a woman. I think a large part of the current trend in the andro/pansexual revolution comes from the desire of women to have equal opportunities, like walking down the street alone without being a target for crime and harassment. One of the reasons I love the punk scene is that it’s the only one where girls and boys were truly treated equally. There was no such thing as being a slut and all fights were fair game. Friends would step into a squabble based on who was getting their ass kicked worse, not your gender or what you were wearing. I broke a guy’s nose once. Unfortunately, women will always have a psychical disadvantage because of the vulnerabilities of pregnancy and extra sensory empathy. Just as Mother Nature has a way of recovering from natural disasters, I predict a future of far less fertility in both genders until we learn to understand what we are. Imagine if everyone asked themselves if they’d be willing to have/raise the child of whoever they’re about to have sex with. Imagine if both genders could get pregnant with no way of knowing which one would? #StrangeDays #Commentary #Fashion

Whatever it is I think I see is somewhere a reality From me to you and you to me, it’s soon to be reality A mime crime pantomime turning back the hands of time You are everyone I ever loved returned to me without the original lost version of forever… Vous êtes tout le monde je aimé jamais retourné à moi sans la version original perdu de toujours ...
