NEWS Meeting of Market Surveillance Assessment Board Was Held

The Second Meeting of Market Surveillance and Product Safety Assessment Board was held on August 16, 2013 at the Ministry of Economy under the chairmanship of Minister of Economy Mr. Zafer ÇAĞLAYAN, with the participation of the Ministers, Mr. Mehdi EKERMinister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Mr. Hayati YAZICI-Minister of Customs and Trade and Mr. Mehmet MÜEZZİNOĞLU-Minister of Health. The Undersecretaries and other senior officials of the market surveillance institutions attended to the meeting. The objectives of Market Surveillance (MS) activities are to protect consumers from dangerous products and to ensure that economic operators fulfill their legal obligations for placing safe and compliant products in the market. MS is carried out by 10 public authorities legally authorized to prepare and implement the product specific legislation in Turkey. The coordination between these authorities is conducted by the Ministry of Economy throughout the Market Surveillance and Product Safety Assessment Board. Turkey’s Southeast Exports $3.275 Billion to Middle East Countries Turkish Southeastern Anatolia’s export to Middle Eastern countries reached $3.275 billion in the first seven months of 2013 with an increase of 20%, compared to the same period of 2012. Southeastern Anatolia region exported a big amount of its $5.3 billion total export rate to Middle East in cereals, legumes, dried fruit, textile, carpet and other several sectors, according to Southeastern Anatolia Exporters Association (GAIB). Iraq, with $2.5 billion is at the top of list, where Saudi Arabia and Syria respectively follow Iraq as second and third. Exports to Syria also increased 478% and reached $189 million between January and July in 2013 when compared to the same period of 2012. Turkey, Japan Take Important Step Toward Reaching Free Trade Accord A study group established by Turkish and Japanese representatives has presented a report on a potential free trade agreement, marking another important step toward a trade pact. The report prepared by the Joint Study Group, has been finalized and is ready to be sent to the Japanese side. Japan and Turkey agreed to look into the possibility of negotiating a bilateral free-trade agreement in July 2012 during Çağlayan’s visit to Japan, in order to develop trade volume, which totaled $3.9 billion in 2012. After the Japanese side completes the internal approval process of the report the countries will be ready to pass to the subsequent phase of beginning FTA negotiations. South Korea and Turkey will seek to complement their bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with fresh agreements in the service and investment sectors, the Seoul government said. New round of talks for free trade deals in the two areas will be held in Ankara for two days starting from Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Seoul and Ankara implemented their bilateral FTA in May, but the agreement currently deals only with products. The government believes the cooperative relationship between the two countries will deepen when new agreements on service and investment sectors are signed,” the statement read. SECTORS Turkey’s Defense Industry Attracts Brazil’s Attention Turkey’s achievements in the defense industry in recent years continue to attract potential new partners such as Brazil, a leading emerging economy. The potential for cooperation in a good number of projects in the defense industry is expected to be discussed by top-level officials from both sides as Celso Amorim, Brazilian minister of defense, is in Turkey on the occasion of the activation of the office of a military attaché at the Brazilian Embassy in Ankara. As per the strategic plan of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) for 2012-16, the industry aims to increase yearly revenue to $8 billion and exports to $2 billion by 2016. Presently ranked 16th in terms of turnover, the industry hopes to place in the top 10 in the world by 2023, the centennial of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Industrial Production In June Up 1.4 Percent, Q2 Average Growth 3.2 Percent Turkey’s industrial production saw a month-on-month rise of 1.4 percent in June and grew on average 3.2 percent in the second quarter, according to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat). The calendar-adjusted data also showed a month-onmonth increase in industrial production, which was up 4.2 percent in June. The mining and quarrying sectors declined 2.1 percent in June compared to the same month last year. Manufacturing sector production rose 5.4 percent year-on-year in June. Meanwhile, computers, electronics and optics showed the most robust growth in the manufacturing sector as production hit 40.7 percent in June compared to the previous month. Pharmaceutical production followed at 19.8 percent before transportation vehicles at 16.1 percent over the same period.
