Korean Minister of Land Transportation and Infrastructure Mr. Seoung-Hwan Suh said Korea- with its experience and expertise- will cooperate with Turkeywith its grand economic power- in third countries. Emphasizing the importance of infrastructure in the economic development of a country, Suh in a speech in Istanbul, defended that the Turkish Ministry of Economy has significant expertise in finance and that Turkey, as a geographical bridge between Asia and Europe, can be a cultural and economic bridge for Asian countries such as South Korea. In addition to Korean Contractors Association Vice Chairman Soong-Chull Shin, the meeting was also attended by Turkey’s Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges vice Chairman, and member of the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Managers, Halim Mete and Turkish Minister of Economy Mr. Zafer Caglayan. Speaking at the meeting, Caglayan stated that the Turkish-Korean Cooperation and Contracting in Central Asia Meeting brought together two super powers in the construction sector, and that he believed that these two powers can achieve important grand projects. Caglayan emphasized that the cooperation between the two countries goes back decades, stating that the contractors of these two countries came together to rehabilitate the infrastructure of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Caglayan also stated that Turkish contractors have a well esteemed position in the world as they have projects in 101 countries amounting 254 billion dollars. Turkish Contractors Among World’s Largest 38 Turkish construction companies have made it to the ‘Top 225 International Contractors’ list of the sector magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR). Turkish Companies To Participate In MOS Fair MOS, 46th International Trade and Business Fair will be held in Celje, Slovenia on September 11-17, 2013. SECTORS Turkish Olive Oil Exports Boom Amid Spain Drought Turkey raised its olive and olive oil exports by 172 percent in the first eight months of the year due to drought in Spain, an agriculture sector representative has said. “Our olive oil sector, which has entered new markets and raised its exports by two-digit percentages to several countries, because of the drought in Spain should seek ways to remain permanent in these markets,” Turkish Agricultural Chambers Union (TZOB) President Şemsi Bayraktar said. Turkey, the fourth largest olive oil producer, jumped its exports to $333 million from $122.2 million with the 172 percent rise between January and August, according to data announced by the Turkish Exporters’ Association (TİM). Production Push in Rice The rice industry has launched a major campaign with the progress it made in production over the past decade. From 216,000 tons in 2002, rice production rose by 144% last year to 528,000 tons. The targeted figure for 2013 is 540,000 tons. The success that Turkey has achieved in rice exports over the past six months indicate that there will be significant activity taking place in the industry in the coming term. Defense Exports Reach $780 Million Turkey’s defense industry’s exports reached $780 million between January and July marking a 9 percent increase from the same period a year earlier, according to data of the Defense and Aerospace Industry Exporters’ Association (SSI). SSI Chairman Latif Aral Aliş said the export volume, worth more than $780 million, in the first half showed a bigger hike than Turkey’s general export volume rise. Aliş stated that their exports rose from $600 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion last year. Their annual export target was to reach $1.5 billion, he added. The most exported products are the parts for planes and helicopters, plane motors, armored land vehicles, ships and speed boats, missiles, rockets and launching platforms, light arms and its equipment, electronic systems, logistic support products and engineering and technology transfer services, he noted.
