Renowned doctors, expert nursing teams, and the latest technology to back them up, are just some of the reasons Swedish delivers “extraordinary care.” But there’s another side to being extraordinary that’s just as important. It’s a way of being treated that makes you feel like someone truly cares. Because, at Swedish, someone does.

financial focus Edward Jones Financial Advisor

Guard Against Identity Theft – and Protect Your Finances In 2015 alone, more than 13 million Americans were victimized by identity theft, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. What can you do to guard your identity and protect yourself from potential financial losses? Here are some ideas to consider:

any of the three credit reporting agencies. You can choose a short-term or long-term alert. And if you’re an active member of the military, you can request a special, one-year alert.

Feed your shredder. Shred all old bank and investment statements,

Review your statements. Closely review the monthly statements from your checking and other financial accounts. If you find any unfamiliar charges, contact your bank or other financial services provider immediately.

Order your credit reports. The three credit reporting agencies – TransUnion, Equifax and Experian – are each required by law to provide you one free credit report a year. Make sure your name, address and other information are correct on your credit report, and if you find old or inaccurate information, have it removed.

applications for new credit cards and any other documents that contain personal information.

Destroy digital data. If you have a variety of financial accounts, you’re not just creating a paper trail – you’re also establishing a digital “footprint.” So, when you sell or otherwise dispose of a computer system or hard drive, you may want to take steps to destroy personal data. You might think that simply deleting it would be sufficient, but tech-savvy identity thieves can “undelete” files or recover information from a formatted drive. However, products are available that allow you to completely wipe out data on hard drives.

Place a fraud alert. If you suspect you have become a victim of Identity theft, place a “fraud alert” on your credit reports by contacting www.edwardjones.com

Change passwords. It’s a good idea to change your Internet passwords every so often – especially those passwords that provide access to financial accounts. Leave your Social Security card home. Snagging someone’s Social

You put your family first. Don’t you deserve a financial advisor who puts you first? At Edward Jones, your goals are our priority. Security number is a real “catch” for identity thieves, so do everything you can to thwart them. And you can start by leaving your Social Security card safely at home – after all, there’s probably never a good reason to bring it out, anyway. In fact, be wary of anyone, or any business, that asks for your Social Security number, either in person or online. Except for a few obvious exceptions, such as your tax preparer, most reputable businesses don’t need to know anything about your Social Security information.

Watch for “phishers.” If you’ve ever gotten an e-mail, supposedly from your bank, advising you that your account will be “frozen” unless you provide personal details about your account, it’s a good bet that someone is “phishing” for this information – and they’re using the “freezing” threat as bait. What’s particularly alarming is that these “phishers” have gotten quite good at duplicating logos and using official-sounding language. However, a legitimate bank would never threaten you this way with an e-mail, so, if you get such a message, contact the bank’s fraud department.

You can go a long way toward protecting yourself against identity theft by following these suggestions — so put them to work soon.

Celebrating SriKrishna Janmastami AT THE

Vedic Cultural Center

around town Vedic Cultural Center celebrated Krishna’s birthday on August 25th, 2016. They celebrate this every year in a grand manner. This year, 15,000 people attended the festival. An 8-course Indian vegetarian feast was served from 10:30 a.m. till 2:00 a.m. to all the attendees. 150 kinds of sweets and savories, and 25 varieties of eggless cakes with various flavors and designs were served. Kids and adults performed kirtans and bhajans throughout, on two stages.

There were many beautiful displays, including that of a Vedic village, a self-sustained village based on agriculture and protected free range cows. Nothing was wasted in the Vedic village. Everything was recycled efficiently. Ladies gave demonstrations of the age-old custom of using milk, butter, and ghee from the cow, and making rotis (Indian flat bread) on clay stoves smeared with cow dung, using dried cow dung a fuel. There were special Indian cows from Uncle Harry’s Farm at the Vedic village. Attendees enjoyed traditional fun games, carrying and balancing pot on the head, henna, etc. Also on display was a large replica of Govardhan hill. It’s a holy hill about 22 kilometers from Mathura, birth place of Krishna. According to ancient scriptures, Krishna held Govardhan hill on his little finger to save the town from the wrath of the God of rains, Indra. Baby Krishna’s deity was placed in a beautifully decorated swing, and attendees were cradling the swing. People lined up in long queues to get a glimpse of beautifully decorated Krishna’s deity, and to give the deity a sacred bath. At midnight, the birth of Krishna was enacted beautifully in front of thousands of mesmerized audiences. Krishna was born at midnight in a prison in Mathura where his parents were imprisoned. According to ancient scriptures, when the goddess of earth Bhudevi had become tormented with excess of sin on the planet, the Supreme personality of Godhead Krishna himself had descended on earth to protect the devotees and destroy evil . A grand cake was cut after midnight to celebrate his birthday! This celebration was extended through the weekend with many cultural events such as Indian classical music, dances and a great feast. Vedic Cultural Center is located at 1420, 228th Avenue SE ,Sammamish, WA 98075. For more information please visit www. vedicculturalcenter.org

Geneva Schlepp

Geneva at the Running for Clean Water fundraiser.

THE AWARD GOES TO Seahawks Athlete of the Week and Budding Environmental Engineer By Mackenzie Williams

Geneva after the 1500m at Junior Olympics Nationals in Sacramento.

For Geneva Schlepp, running is about more than just reaching the finish line. Ever since she learned about the nonprofit organization Water for People— a group that provides clean drinking water to nine developing countries worldwide—Geneva has dedicated herself to raising money for a cause she believes in. Fusing her passions for track, the environment, and alleviating poverty, Geneva created the fundraiser “Running for Clean Water,” in which members pledge a distance they will run or walk, and then reach out to friends and family to sponsor them— all benefitting Water for People.

Over the summer, Geneva pledged and ran 60 miles over a twoweek period. “I reached out to my friends and family by mail and sent out handwritten notes explaining my fundraiser and asking for help. 100% of the friends and family I reached out to wrote back and supported me!” she recalled. Geneva has realized her passion for non-profit work through her engagement with Water for People, which serves impoverished people specifically “by implementing water systems that will last for lifetimes, enabling generations of people to be able to get access to clean water and sanitation. Water For People is about the long-term solution to the water crisis by educating the people with the goal of instilling the knowledge necessary to lead healthy lives with their water.”

Geneva with her Skyline team at the starting line of their home course in Klahanie.

Looking forward, Geneva hopes to become a Kingo-Co All District Cross Country and Track & Field runner and to compete for the State cross country and track meet in the 1600m for her Skyline team. On the horizon, Geneva plans to major in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Water Resource and Environmental Engineering and to double minor in Math and Spanish, hopefully at Washington State University where she would like to continue her cross country career. Throughout her life, Geneva aims to prioritize her health, family, and faith. “I am a Christian and make time for Bible study every day so I can spend time with God even when it seems like there are never enough hours in the day.” Geneva is particularly thankful for her parents, sister Mya, and team that “brings a smile to my face every single day.” As a high school junior, Geneva has already raised $6,000 for Water for People, and encourages everyone to get involved through connecting with the organization on CrowdRise. For more information on Water for People, please visit waterforpeople.org.

Geneva’s volunteer work has also made her a better athlete, training intensively every week to prepare for the cross country season, USATF Junior Olympic Nationals, and Running for Clean Water. At the Junior Olympics, Geneva qualified for finals of the 1500m and then placed in the top eight. Geneva’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. On September 15, Geneva was awarded the CenturyLink High School Athlete of the Week Award by the Seattle Seahawks for “her dedication to academics, community involvement, leadership, and athletic performance,” and was recognized on the field on October 16 during the game vs. the Atlanta Falcons. Despite her accomplishments, Geneva remains humble. “I don’t want accolades for doing my best because I know that by giving back to others and making myself the best I can be is all the gratification I need. However, I am so honored to receive the award and feel truly blessed to get to share the honor with my community,” said Geneva.

PARENTING TOWARD INDEPENDENCE Written By Kelly Moore, PhD, Eastside Preparatory School Director Of Student Support Services

Of course, I was going to be a fabulous parent. I was a parent educator, had spent all of my adult life working with children and teenagers and I simply knew kids. I couldn’t wait. I had read a lot about attachment parenting and was certain it was the main goal of parenting. Then I went to a movie about wildlife and saw that animals approached parenting a little differently. They actually ready their young to live apart from them — to live independently. This shouldn’t have been a surprise to me at that point ... but it was. I need to not only show my children that they are loved and connected to me but I also have to start preparing them to live without me? Indeed it is the most important thing we can do as parents to prepare these young people.

However, it is not easy. Teenagers are not yet ready to be “independent.” They need us. They need to borrow our prefrontal cortices at times, they need to see they are loved and connected ... and did I mention the financial agreement we have with them? But teenagers won’t let us continue to parent them the way we did when they were younger. They are trying on their wings and home is the testing ground. So the question becomes -- how do we raise independent adults who are still so dependent? One of the major problems is with the word “inde pendence.” I would argue none of us are independent. We are all deeply interconnected with one another and rely on each other for our survival. What teenagers want and need is more aligned with autonomy than it is independence. Michael Riera, an author and parenting expert, refers often to this shift in relationship as changing from being a “manager” to being a “consultant.” A consultant doesn’t just leave a client to flounder for themselves nor do

20 Plateau Living • November 2016

they micromanage every decision their client makes. A consultant provides structure and support but also turns over much responsibility of decision making to their client. A consultant guides, a manager controls. The tricky thing is that sometimes we, as parents, feel like our job as manager is how we express our love to our kids. Making sure they don’t suffer too much, intervening at school, at first glimpse of a struggle or scrambling to manage their overlyhectic schedule. Eastside Prep’s book club selection this past year was “The Gift of Failure” by Jessica Lahey. Lahey argues that most parents of our generation are “over parenting.” We are jumping in too soon to rescue them — and this is creating a generation of kids who lack confidence, resilience and expect their parents to handle things for them. Like Riera, Lahey doesn’t advocate complete independence and sees the role of parent as crucial. She does argue, however, that our role as a parent is better suited for guidance and connection rather than the hands on, managerial efforts she so frequently sees. Your Solution For Vein and Vascular Care in Issaquah

The road to independence is a bumpy one and certainly not linear. There is simply no way to do it perf ectly. Whatever path you choose, no matter how many mistakes you make, development will take over regardless. I leave you with words from Anna Quindlen in her essay “All My Babies Are Gone Now.” “Even today I’m not sure what worked and what didn’t, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I’d done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be. And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world, who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That’s what the books never told me.”

TUTORING CENTER OF SAMMAMISH A student’s academic journey may be ever changing—full of both challenges and successes; subjects that come easy and ones that don’t. Every student is different, and even the most focused might need a helping hand at times. Even for parents, identifying how to best help a struggling child is not always the easiest task.

John Hickman, Owner of the Tutoring Center of Sammamish, understands the spectrum of challenges that both students and their parents face in the wake of academic struggle. John himself was once that parent seeking help. “We got into this because we wanted to help our children out—we wanted to be part of their lives and get into what they were doing and we felt this was a good way to do it,” Hickman said. But it also allowed us to help out other kids that had similar concerns of our own children— helping them out through school and also giving them additional support. Through the Tutoring Center, it was a really good opportunity to do that.” With just shy of one year under his belt, John has already mastered the art of tutoring by adopting a unique approach called the Rotational Approach to Learning. The method of instruction was developed to help students with learning disabilities and attention and behavior problems. The approach involves one-on-one tutoring paired with the goal of rapidly improved learning. “Students rotate up to three different stations throughout the hour that they come and they sit with two to three different instruc-

tors during that hour,” Hickman said. “The idea of why they rotate is it helps [students] clear their heads and get a different perspective by sitting with a different instructor.”

The Tutoring Center of Sammamish instructs students K-12 in all subjects aside from test prep— John hopes to integrate the SAT test prep program in the near future. Thus far, John has found the program incredibly effective. “It’s such a great program because it rapidly increases learning. We aren’t saying, ‘hey come in and do your homework,’ and kind of put a Band-Aid on it. If you’re struggling and you’re behind, we can help you get your grade level up quick.” John said that the with the Rotational Approach to Learning, students should be able to increase their grade level by one full grade in an average of six months, every six months. “What I have found is that when students want to improve and come consistently, our program really helps them out,” he added. John said the most rewarding part of the job is seeing how successful the program is—seeing how the child and the parents benefit from academic achievement, and how that builds confidence in

Reduce Your

Blood Pressure Over The Holidays – Naturally! By N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe

With excessive calories and holiday stress, blood pressure can inevitably rise over the holidays. Fortunately, with a few tips, you’ll be able to reduce your blood pressure over the holidays – naturally! THiNk FOOd + FiTNess Don’t digest Thanksgiving dinner without a Thanksgiving stroll. Sign up for the Turkey Trot! Create a calorie burn on this holiday known for pigging out – and do your blood pressure a favor

in the process. Simply getting your body into motion by walking can lower your blood pressure. Don’t be a couch potato over the holidays. Get up, get moving (even if that means playing Pokemon Go or holiday shopping) and do your body a favor. Don’t underestimate the power of fitness. Even a brisk 20-minute walk several times per week can lower blood pressure. Shedding a few extra pounds or a few inches off your waistline is helpful in reducing blood pressure too.

dON’T OveRiNdulge Overindulgence seems to come with the holidays, but try feeding your stomach (eating when your stomach growls) rather than by force of habit. Mindful eating can cause calorie reduction, weight loss, and help you achieve better health (including your blood pressure!). Change your habits by creating a food diary. Don’t overindulge with alcohol either. Binge drinking can have a negative effect on blood pressure, even causing it to rise more than 20 points. Stick to two drinks or less each day.

saY NO TO salT The holidays come with all sorts of opportunities for seconds (or even thirds), but in doing so, salt intake rises, which can result in increased blood pressure readings. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2,300 milligrams per day of sodium is recommended. However, those with high blood pressure should limit their intake of salt to 1,500 milligrams per day. Shrimp, ham, and gravy pack a punch of sodium – anywhere from 480 milligrams to a whopping 650 milligrams per serving. Even that dinner roll can be a little over 218 milligrams. Exercise moderation and portion control.

saY Yes TO BaNaNas Who says you can’t eat healthy over the holidays? Make bananas your friend; eating two bananas daily can lower blood pressure 10 points, thanks to the potassium. Not a banana fan? Chomp on dates, sip tomato juice, or even go heavy on the guacamole (with potassium-rich avocados). Don’t let your blood pressure soar over the holidays. Increase your activity level and decrease your calorie consumption and intake of sodium-rich foods. You’ll be glad you did!
