A violent storm hit Burgersfort last week Saturday and wreaked havock in homes, while a large number of businesses, schools, churches and also informal businesses sustained heavy damages. On Sunday morning some informal traders, such as these in the photograph literally had to start over again... More photographs on pages 2 & 3.

Major damage as storm wreaks havoc A storm with very strong winds bringing between 55 and 75mm of rain within a short period of time caused major damage in especially Burgersfort on Saturday evening.

In the photo top left is some of the damage to Laerskool Burgersfort. Above and left: On Sunday morning workers started early to repair structural damage to businesses and informal businesses in Burgersfort.

CTM employees (left) made the best of a bad situation as they cleaned up the store after it was flooded during the storm. Various trees also caused damage at the store.

Many trees fell over and everywhere in town this week teams could be spotted working on cleaning up and removing the fallen trees. In some cases the unexpected supply of wood came in handy as cut pieces were collected in store trolleys.

The Dutch Reformed Church in Burgersfort suffered major damage as parts of the ceiling and roof caved in during the storm. The congregation was unable to have their church service in the building on Sunday morning, 27 January 2019. Volunteers assisted with the clean-up of the process and donations or assistance for repairs are still very welcome.

Calvin College in Burgersfort also suffered damage during the storm. Two of their new classrooms had the roof blown off.

Titus 3:4 – 7 (NIV) 4

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Chaotic crossing Month-end chaotic traffic is not an unusual problem in the area. On Monday afternoon the four-way stop at Steelpoort was however an exceptionally lawless spot. A truck used the lane dedicated for turning right to just proceed straight without stopping at the stop sign. In the process almost causing an accident with an oncoming vehicle busy turning right. An impatient delivery vehicle driver from a local business near the crossing chose to cross out of turn and out of rule regulations.

Instead of stopping, waiting his turn and then turning within the allocated lanes, he opted to skip the cross by going past the back of the oncoming truck and in front of oncoming traffic in that lane. Pointsmen are helping to regulate traffic in Burgersfort during peak times, but Steelpoort do not have that assistance. Month-end is not over yet, so another weekend with drivers doing as they please may be on the cards - be aware and be careful.

They walked away with 15 pairs of soccer boots and 15 bags. Black Chrome Mine took the second place and received jerseys

and a R4000 voucher. Magareng Mine came third. Trophies were handed out and both the organisers and sponsors remarked on how well behaved the teams were and how much character was shown in the tournament. “We believe a fit employee is a productive employee and we would like to challenge other companies, medical aids and mining related industries and stakeholders to follow in the steps of Health Squared and support sports development through sponsorships” said the organisers.

Big and small came to support the day’s participating teams. The event took place in good sportsmanship and saw employees from different mines and smelters compete in a sport they love.

SPORT TUPS receives support from Lotto

Modikwa MTB riders participate in Barberton On Saturday 26 January 2019, the Modikwa Cycle club riders attended the annual Barberton XCM MTB Challenge hosted by Barberton High School. The riders participated in the 20 and 30km routes. It had rained a lot the night before the race and on race day it was very overcast. Riders were faced with a muddy and wet course, making riding quite difficult. The race was well planned with beautiful scenery and everybody from emergency units and traffic to media was at their post. Participating riders were Derek and Bev Rieck, Jannie and Sanet Oosthuizen (20km route) and Helgaard and Juanita Prins (30km route). The riders completed their respective routes without any injuries or mechanical problems. Despite the wet conditions the riders reported that it was a very enjoyable race. All the riders who completed the race received medals. (Information and photographs: Willem Montgomery & Helgaard Prins).

Mr Matsobane Legodi, the Limpopo Provincial Manager of the National Lotteries Commission handed over TUPS equipment (TUPS crowns) to hundreds of TUPS players and well-wishers. This happened with the annual Kgoshikgolo Mampuru II Commemoration event. He said: “Our doors are open to sport initiatives that makes a sustainable impact. As much as I only read about this sport from the applications sent through to us, I am relieved that the sport is played by such an eager, committed and energetic community, representing different villages. We know R50 000 is a small amount of money and that it was the first funding that your organisation received. To us it’s only the beginning of a journey to change lives of millions of South Africans - with TUPS sporting code as a catalyst. I see this sporting growing internationally and making some of you international stars, and it’s all possible because you pushed it this far without any funding and backing” added Legodi. National Lotteries Commission has on 07 November 2018 allocated R50 000 (fifty thousand rand) to Thavhanacle Ultra-physio Sport Federation (the sole custodian of TUPS sporting code). According to the funding agreement the allocated amount will be used for the purchase of 8 units of TUPS Crowns - an enabler for the sporting code. The equipment will be distributed according to the existing programmes of TUPS Sport Federation.
