What can Tubatse SEZ expect from China mission?

Gazette Donald, don’t ...

The Project Manager of the Tubatse Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Ms Bunjiwe Gwebu has departed for China last weekend to seek investments for the SEZ. Gwebu forms part of a South African delegation that will participate in an investment roadshow to Shanghai, China aimed at attracting investors to the South African Special Economic Zones (SEZs) The roadshow is led by the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Bulelani Magwanishe. The roadshow will give representatives of the South African government, implementers of the SEZ Programme and SEZs an opportunity to present the value-proposition of the South African SEZs to potential investors and finance institutions. The roadshow will take place in the form of workshops where the South African SEZ delegation will make presentations on the SEZ opportunities and incentives offered. “This ministerial mission will provide us with an opportunity to meet with relevant companies in China and present to them various investment opportunities that will be available for them in our proposed SEZ to take advantage of. This is part of our mission to market the SEZ internationally with the aim of attracting foreign investors to invest in the multi-sectors of focus which include PGMs beneficiation, manufacturing and assembling of mining inputs as well as production of solar PV modules for the energy cluster,” says Gwebu. She added that the land where the proposed Tubatse SEZ will be located, is already a hive of economic activity as it is a platinum and chrome mining corridor, and this creates a demand base for mining input supplies, as well as numerous businesses that are supporting the mines, and this will generate interest amongst potential investors. “The Tubatse SEZ will be located in Burgersfort in the Steelpoort area and has a potential to impact a number of areas in and outside the district through the catalysing of growth of industrial clusters applicable in the different areas, even beyond the SEZ boundaries. The infrastructure and all other resources that already exist in the area as well as the road networks that connect major routes that lead to the rest of Africa, will be our major selling points in our efforts to woo Chinese investors to the SEZ,” says Gwebu. She added that currently there are 38 mines operational in the area and about 12 new ones are expected to develop in the near future. “This will ensure an increase in the demand for mining inputs and activates the manufacturing and construction sectors in the area, thus improving the job creation levels, skills upgrading and technology transfer over the years. The availability of huge PGM deposits in the area establish this SEZ as one of the key areas of national priority concerning mineral beneficiation” adds Gwebu. According to the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Bulelani Magwanishe the roadshow seeks to attract potential investors in different sectors to invest in the country’s SEZs. “In order to have vibrant SEZs and competitive regional economies, it is necessary to continuously implement a systematic marketing and investment approach for various SEZs in South Africa and to also state their value-proposition to potential investors,” says Magwanishe.

If the ‘wall’ between the taxi rank in Burgersfort and the R37 main road running through town is anything to go by, US president Donald Trump will not succeed with his plans for a wall between the USA and Mexico. Our advice: Don’t do it. It wont work. Come and see the proof. All it does is providing an interesting view on the busy ‘food court’.

Skipping the red light...

Skipping of red traffic lights are not an uncommon sight in Burgersfort. Many drivers excel in breaking the law like this, but earlier this week, it was the animals taking over the roads without any concept of the law. As winter approaches there are more and more cattle in town and it may only be a question of time because an accident involving them happens.

Drainage project in progress

The renovation of storm drains in Burgersfort is nearing completion - although it might be a never ending cycle judging by how quickly they could get damaged again. Trucks passing through town use the sidewalks as parking areas. These ultra heavy vehicles damage the storm drain structure and covers when driving over it. Most of the drains have now been fitted with covers, although the large gaps between the covers and support structures, different size concrete blocks used as covers, and unpolished finished look may leave it looking like a job in progress (or money down the drain) for a long time to come.

Buried in concrete

This week, one of those great ideas to try and beautify the streets of Burgersfort was finally buried in concrete. The walls constructed to try and keep some order in a town where u-turns, pick-up stops and general lawlessness is rife, took on a new dimension. Originally trees were planted within the walls filled with soil. That did not work and the trees were vandalised and not taken care of. They died relatively quickly. Then flowers were planted. These lasted an even shorter period. What happened then was the creation of the largest rubbish bin on a national road possible. Yes, the R37 running through town is a national road and these barriers became the ultimate dumping ground for pedestrians crossing the road and motorists discarding their rubbish from cars while waiting at the traffic lights. Weeds also took over the soil. Perhaps the idea of beautification was not buried, it just took on a new look. Now these barriers will no longer be rubbish filled and will automatically create a cleaner look.

Grandland X

Following its world premiere at last year’s Frankfurt motor show in September, Opel’s Grandland X has landed in South Africa to contest the highly-competitive SUV segment. Pitched against the likes of the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, and Peugeot 3008 (to which it is closely related), the 4.48 metre long SUV comes to market as the third and largest member of the Opel X family, slotting in above the 4.2 metre Crossland X and 4.3 metre Mokka X. The front-wheel drive vehicle (all-wheel drive isn’t an option) has seating for five and 514 litres of boot space that can expand to 1652 litres with the rear seats folded. It rides on independent suspension all around, with a generous ground clearance of 223mm that makes it more suited to dirt trails than most softroaders. It also comes with pothole-friendly high-profile tyres. Opel South Africa has launched the vehicle in three derivatives, all powered by the same four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with outputs of 121kW and 240Nm, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Opel quotes a combined town/freeway fuel consumption average of 7 litres per 100km, but doesn’t list any performance figures. Starting the line up is the standard Grandland X 1.6T auto, which comes standard with 16” alloy wheels, cloth seats, a colour touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible and has six speakers. LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, climate control, cruise control, park assistance, hill start assist and electric windows are also included, as are safety features like tyre pressure monitors, ABS brakes, stability control, and six airbags. Next up is the Grandland X 1.6T Enjoy auto (the one we took for a spin), which, over and above the features already mentioned, adds leatherette bolsters for the cloth seats, 17” alloys, lane departure warning, and a Sight-and-Light pack which includes rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. The range-topping Cosmo model (the one exhibited at the reveal in Lydenburg/Mashishing on Tuesday (see page 4) gets a more stylish look with the roof and the side door mirrors in diamond black, aluminium roof rails, and 18” alloy wheels. The dynamic theme is also continued in the interior with leather seats, a leather-covered steering wheel, while standard features include blind spot alert, adaptive LED headlamps, heated seats, hands-free power tailgate, navigation, and advanced park assist that automatically guides the vehicle into a bay. Prices range from R429 000 up to R565 000 and include a 5-year/120 000km warranty and 5-year/90 000km service plan, with 15 000km service intervals. The car is very spacious inside, seats are comfortable and the interior stylish with mostly dark and black trim. In Europe they may describe it as bland, but in our harsh sunlight, nothing shone in our eyes, making driving much more comfortable. The 1600 petrol turbo pulls well and the car handles very well with less wallowing than we expected. Combined with killer brakes (we tested it with an idiot driver swerving right in front of us during the test drive) and low road noise the car felt safe and made for a smooth trip. The Grandland X will do very well as a family sedan for longer trips and will also excel as a mom’s taxi when a family can only afford one vehicle. In this regard our woman driver was quick to air her views about the Grandland X. In short: “It looks nice, the shape. The rear window looks small, but it did not really bother when driving. It goes faster quicker than anticipated when you put your foot down, and stops even faster. I like the auto gearbox and the shifts are almost imperceptible (compared to the auto box in the newspaper’s American 4 x 4). I like the vanity mirror on the driver’s side so that I can check on my lipstick. I also like the footrest for my left foot in the floor well. It is not too near the brake pedal and just the right angle. The dark interior will also hide marks from dirty little hands”. So there you have it. The Grandland X - available now from Westvaal in Lydenburg / Mashishing and Steelpoort.
