Cooperatives fly economic transformation flag high Cooperatives run by orindary people are one of government’s vehicles for radical economic transformation. This week President Jacob Zuma praised these initiatives saying they contribute towards economic development, democratic economic participation and redistribution of wealth. Cooperatives can benefit from the Cooperatives Incentive Scheme which gives grants to

cooperatives with no repayment expected. This is managed by the Department of Small Business Development. In the last financial year R75 million was allocated and more than 50% of this was accessed by women-led and owned cooperatives. The money from this was used to buy mostly farming equipment, industrial overlockers and embroidery machines as well as event management equipment among others.
