Tubatse Police Station took the lead this year with regards to making people and the community they serve newly aware of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and the devastating effect the illness can have on society. Together with Education, Health and Welfare roleplayers, cluster peer educators and personnel from Praktiseer Clinic they gathered early Monday morning at the hall at the Police Staion in Praktiseer for a candle lighting ceremony to create awareness, educate and support victims and their families. Although World Aids Day was only yesterday on 1 December, the Police decided on Monday Morning because of a hectic festive season schedule.

16 days of activism Burgersfort Police partnered with the Community Policing Forum, Pastors Against Crime as well as the youth and women from Gowe Parish last week Friday as part of activities of the 16 days of activism against violence against women and children. The campaign was held in Burgersfort and Steelpoort, whereafter the group went to the bridge in the vicinity of Jorge Resort between the two towns on the R555 road. At the bridge they prayed for safety on this road as a large number of accidents regularly take place along this route.

Later in the day the road became gridlocked for hours (mainly because of impatient motorists) when the road was closed to clean up the accident scene. SAPS visits Mahlagaume Primary School On Thursday 24 November 2016, Tubatse SAPS social crime prevention, Tubatse VEP and YCOP conducted a crime awareness campaign for 16 Days of Activism against abuse of Women and Children at Mahlagaume Primary School in Bothashoek village. Const Chauke addressed the parents, teachers and learners about different types of abuse such as physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse. She further encouraged them to report any abuse that is happening to the SAPS. She added that men can be abused as well and anyone experiencing abuse should report it to the SAPS. Boy (5) murdered The Tubatse SAPS is investigating the murder of a 5-year old boy. The boy was allegedly murdered by his father. On 25 November at about 06:30 in the morning, the Tubatse Police received a report that there is a child who has been assaulted with a stone in Praktiseer at Mountain View section. The police found the child inside a shack with a stone on his head in a pool of blood. The child died on the scene. It is alleged that the child was struck with the stone by his father after he had an argument with the mother. A case of murder was opened for further investigations. Follow ups were made and the suspect was arrested later on the same day. The 44-year old appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate`s court on Monday 28 November and was not granted bail. The case was postponed to 8 December 2016. “As we are on the 16 Days of Activsm and no violence Against Women and Children, the Police would like to urge the community to visit government offices such as social workers, schools and the SAPS to report any activities related to domestic violence that is happening at their homes”. Focus on abuse during 16 days of activism On Wednesday 30 November 2016, the Tubatse SAPS were invited to attend the grade 7 farewell function at Morewane Primary school in Riba Cross. The Tubatse Saps Social Crime Prevention commander Warrant Officer Kgasago had an opportunity to address learners, teachers and parents about the 16 Days of Activsm Against Abuse of Women and Children. Mine managers and mayors talk at Two Rivers PlaƟnum A very important meeting between mine managers and the new mayors of Sekhukhune District and Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse took place at Two Rivers Platinum last week. Sekhukune District executive mayor, Cllr Stanley Keyamotseng Ramaila, his mayoral committee, other councillors and officials, as well as Fetakgomo / Greater Tubatse Mayor, Cllr Johannes Choris Phokane, met with general managers of mines in the Eatern Limb and their support staff to lay a foundation for the way forward for the next couple of years. The meeting centred around the roles the mining houses play in the area, their investment in communities through their Social Labour Plans (SPL)and other initiatives as well as the role government should play to create an envrionment condusive to prosperious businesses and in turn communities. Taking the lead, Mayor Ramaila told the meeting that “ ... in the discourse of economic development and policy, there are many theoretical approaches and understanding depending on which school of thought one comes from. There are those who argue that government should solely play a role of enabler and regulator and allow private sector to drive development and growth and on the other hand there are those who argue that government should take the centre stage by becoming the driver of economic development and growth. Our view is that neither of these two paradigms can work on their own. We fully subscribe to the notion of a developmental state wherein the role of the state becomes that of leading different actors and players in society towards a shared development trajectory. Our view is that for South Africa and indeed for Sekhukhune to go forward, we need to construct a social compact, a compact between government, labour, business and civil society. Each component or role players within the social compact should be aware of its responsibilities and fulfil them to the benefit of society”. Later on in his address he also said “We have experienced situations wherein many of our mines had to close as communities resorted to mass protests often accompanied by public violence. Meeting here this morning, we need a critical engagement on what are causes of these ongoing protests: - Is it because mining companies are not fulfilling their commitments as captured in their social and labour plans? -Is it because of high levels of poverty and unemployment in our communities thereby creating added pressure on our mines to employ more people? -Is it because of lack of coherent planning and working relationship between Magoshi, Mines and Municipalities? - Is it because of the inability of government to create stable and secure environment conducive for economic growth and development? These are questions that we need to
thoroughly engage as we grapple with issues of social and economic development. As new leadership of the municipality, we want to express our desire and willingness to play an active role in ensuring that we improve the conditions around the mining industry”. After Mayor Ramaila’s speech, mine managers got the opportunity to air their challenges, visions and how they see the future working with government to create a prosperous district. The mine managers explained to the mayors that their area is different from areas such as Rustenburg in more than one way. Locally the mines are relatively modernised with less employees than what is needed at the mines in Rustenburg. The local mines are also from many different companies while the Rustenburg area has three major mining companies operating. Mr JJ Joubert, General Manager of Two Rivers Platinum Mine told the meeting that in the last year they’ve invested an additional R10 million in the area, over and above their SLP commitments. The managers agreed that even though they stretch as far as possible in difficult economic conditions, it seems that communities are seldom satisfied. Another problem all of them share is the uncertainty of recognised community representative structures. Often one group negotiates and reaches an agreement with regards to allocation of resources for development in communities, only to be replaced by another shortly after the mine has concluded their meetings with the first group. Other challenges include the red tape that often surrounds some government departments. SLP’s are often not approved in time for a specific financial year, while demands on budgets are made through different community and governmental channels for that money. Some of the mines also have the challenge of being on the border of Mpumalanga and Limpopo. This result in demands on their resources from both sides’ governments and communities. The forum created through this meeting will be meeting more often in future to assist in creating an optimal growth environment through which the mines, communities and government can work together to make the area a prosperous beacon in South Africa.

Limpopo Valley ToyRun 2016 The annual Limpopo Vallley ToyRun took place at Tubatse Chrome Club on Saturday last week. Funds were raised and toys collected through a golf day and the entrance to the event. These toys will be distrib-
uted to less fortunate children in the area. Visitors enjoyed the day for a good cause. Late afternoon the bikers also put the Tubatse burnout pad to good use.
Tubatse Masters vs Driekop Masters The organisers thanked everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s ToyRun. Next year they will be doing the same and hope to see everyone there. This year they will however make Christmas brighter for a few needy children with your help.
Modikwa soccer team in top form SAPS vs Modikwa On Wednesday 30 November, the SAPS Tubatse/Mecklenburg/Ohrigstad soccer team (on the right) hosted a soccer team from Modikwa mine (above) for a friendly match. The match was played in Moroke. The men from Modikwa is currently in top form and they managed to win the match by 5-2. (Information and photographs: Constable Chuene T.B)
On Saturday 26 November, Tubatse Masters played a friendly soccer match against Driekop Masters. The match was played in Driekop. The host team dominated the match from the first whistle and managed to score an early goal to lead the match 1-0. Tubatse Masters came back late in the first half and they managed to level the score with Noko Makatji to make half time score 1-1. In the second half Tubatse Masters dominated the ball possession and managed to score another two goals by Pitso Sehlabela. The hosts tried to come back into the match but failed to penetrate Tubatse Masters’ defence. The final score was Tubatse Masters 3 and Driekop Masters 1. Chrome anglers’ prize giving The Chrome Angling Club hosted their annual prize giving event at Winterveld Club. It was a close competition with the ranking list constantly changing right to the last competition. Throughout the year the anglers compete each month hoping that every time he/she will take the lead. Results: Junior Boys: 1st Place: Darius Potgieter, 2nd Place: MJ De Beer & 3rd Place: Danna Riekert. Junior Girls: 1st Place: Mianke Visagie & 2nd Place: Mika Oosthuizen.
