Safety at DCM a top priority D

warsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) heeded the call from the South African Minerals Council (formerly known as the Chamber of Mines) and the Minister of Mineral Resources, Mr. Gwede Mantashe to host a dedicated Safety Day. Safety has always been a top priority for DCM, with workers knowing their rights to withdraw from an unsafe environment and to be pro-acƟve in making sure that work is done in a way that everyone can return to their families safely at the end of the day. Last week Wednesday, the mine hosted not only a Dedicated Safety Day, but also included Employee Wellness in the programme. The day’s schedule included messages from the SHE RepresentaƟves, Trade Union, HODs and Women in Mining. Employees talked about safety iniƟaƟves on the mine and year-to-date incidents of injuries at the mine as well as FOG incidents. The format of the day made it possible for employees to engage with each other to increase awareness and commitment towards working safely every day. They also remembered fellow employees who lost their lives at the mine and workers at surrounding mines in the area who were fatally injured. Mr. Rian Burger, General Manager of DCM emphasised that employees have the right to safe working condiƟons and that everyone should take responsibility to make DCM a place of Zero Harm. In the end, the most important asset of the company is its people and only through caring for each other can the chain reacƟon of safety and producƟvity properly kick into

acƟon. The day was filled with posiƟvity that resulted in dancing, singing and voluntary wellness tesƟng parƟcipaƟon. Employees could get a variety of check-ups on things like blood pressure, blood glucose levels, Body Mass Index, HIV and TB tesƟng done. DCM also ensured that everyone enjoyed a snack pack with sandwiches, fruit and juice. This Safety Day is set to become an annual event where employees can engage about one of the most important aspects of the job - working safely.

Being safety minded was also rewarded as employees competed during a safety quesƟon session.

The Safety Day was interacƟve with employees parƟcipaƟng to ensure that they understand the safety messages and are commiƩed towards working safely. The day included Employee Wellness where they could get a variety of free health tests done.

On strike

At the time of going to press members of the South African Municipal Union Branch in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality were still on a strike that they had embarked upon last Monday. The strike is a protected legal strike and during their protest action outside the municipal head office in Burgersfort on Monday, they waved around a hand-written memorandum wherein linkage between the illegal VBS money investment scandal and the, according to them, abortive personnel integration of the erstwhile Fetakgomo and Tubatse local municiplaities are insinuated. In the memorandum it is also alleged that several senior officials are corrupt and their dismissal is demanded. Chairperson of the local branch of SAMWU, Mr Collins Dlamini, told Platinum Gazette on Thursday that following a council meeting at Apel on Tuesday, the memorandum was still scheduled to be handed over after the Local Council decided to give some senior managers seven days to respond to allegations against them before they are suspended. A meeting was also due to be held between employee representatives and the Mayor later on Thursday. Last week the mayor alleged in an interview with a national media organisation that the municipality and its executives were clueless about the legality of the Venda Building Society Mutual Bank investment of more than R200 million.

The Office of the Executive of Mayor Sekhukhune District Municipality represented by MMC Yvonne Mmakola welcomed MEC of Education Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe at Maswi A Nape Primary school - Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality to officially launch E - library. This programme will be rolled out across the whole District and teachers and principals will attend workshops on E – library to effectively pass on the knowledge to their students.

Graduation for Fascinating Womanhood students

Pastor C. Phandala and Pastor M.S. Phiri are the ‘mothers’ of Fascinating Womanhood.

Fascinating Womanhood has been running for 7 years and last weekend this year’s graduates received their certificates. The women gather weekly for sessions of prayer and self-disovery through scripture and Bible study led by Pastors C. Phandala from the Abundant Life Church and M.S. Phiri from the PCF Church in Mashifane Park. The women joining the Fascinating Womanhood course grow together and form a bond that see many of them return year after year for continued studies and fellowship. The Fascinating Womanhood teaches women to listen to the instructions from the Bible on be-

ing a woman and dealing with the challenges of being a mother, wife and often also have a career that make demands of you. The graduation function took place at Tubatse Chrome Club on Saturday last week and the women had a morning filled with prayer, worship and messages from the scripture. They were later joined by their husbands to enjoy time together in worship and with fellow graduates. Women interested in joining the group in 2019 should keep an eye on Platinum Gazette as their meetings are advertised before the course kicks off.

The women dressed for the occasion. Some changed into formal wear for the late session when they were joined by the men in their lives.

Hard work went into making sure everything went right for the graduation.

The event was held at Tubatse Chrome Club and the women enjoyed the morning together.

Communities stand together for water “We are fully aware of the issues raised by the 7 communities and wish to State that together with the Office of the Premier, the Office of the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality has been part of all the engagements between the affected communities and Lebalelo Water Users Association (LWUA),” said Mr Willy Mosoma, Spokesperson in the Office of the Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), this week. He added: “Our interest in the main was to facilitate fruitful talks between the two parties. So far, we have not been made aware of irreparable differences between the two groups. And we are still confident that both LWUA and the 7 communities will find each other. We apologize in advance if the help that we offer is not enough and we will improve moving forward. We apologize again

for not beiing able to respond to issues directed at Lebalelo. Regarding water supply in the 7 villages, so far, we are supplying them with water from boreholes. So far, we have not been made aware of challenges of water shortages in those areas. We are however free to be engaged with if there are challenges of water supply in those areas so that urgent interventions can be made”. He reacted after Platinum Gazette came in contact with both SDM and Lebalelo after a meeting with representatives from a Working Committee representing the communities of Sehunyane, Shakung, Ga-Masete, Malokela, Pataneng, Modubeng and Phala. The group (photo below) raised various issues they have with the newspaper, including an alleged shortage of water supply to their respective villages.

The newspaper requested Lebalelo to provide feedback on the issues raised with the newspaper in time for next week’s publication in order to afford the company enough time to formally respond.

Bauba plans continued chrome growth Bauba Platinum (Bauba; JSE: BAU) released in its integrated annual report for 2018 on 25 October 2018 and stated in it, that it is close to finalising the purchase of an opencast chrome ore project. Bauba has also received an acceptance letter from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) in respect of a prospecting right application for an opencast chrome target that it and its geological advisors believe will yield high prospects for opencast and underground chrome ore near existing chrome ore operations in the Western Bushveld Complex. Bauba, which operates the Moeijelijk Chrome Mine (Moeijelijk) near Steelpoort in the Eastern Bushveld Complex, say it will invest only in assets with a low cost of production to protect itself against cyclical market downturns. On the state of the chrome market, Bauba says the chrome ore price has stabilised and prices are expected to increase towards the end of the 2018 calendar year due to an improved demand outlook. There was a weak start in the 2019 financial year with record inventory levels in

Chinese ports, partially due to higher imports from South African producers and lower consumption in June, a consequence of environmental inspections. Also, market confidence was negatively impacted by the US-China trade war. In FY2018, Bauba’s focus was on developing Moeijelijk from an opencast operation with a limited life-of-mine selling only unbeneficiated chrome ore run-of-mine into both an underground and opencast operation selling premium speciality grade chrome ore concentrates. Steady progress was made on development of the underground mine, with 30 000t of stable monthly LG6 chrome ore expected to be reached before the end of calendar 2018 or early in 2019. Commissioning of the new wash plant to produce chrome concentrate, is in progress. Capital expenditure on Moeijelijk in FY2018 was R72,354 million (FY2017: R9,699 million). Regarding its platinum assets, the company says exploration remained suspended in FY2018 as PGE prices continued to fall, restricting potential opportunities for raising meaningful funding.
