Last week thunderstorms lit up the night sky. This photograph was taken on Wednesday evening, but on Friday the rain came pouring down again. This did however not deter the audience of the Hans Dromme-daar-is show at Laerskool Burgersfort. See photographs taken of the action at the school during the day on page 7.

Premier Mathale Youth ready for opens Magareng Mine Elections - stresses mines’ role in job creation
Steelpport and Burgersfort will greatly benefit form a R4.9 thousand million capital investment through the opening and development of the Magareng Chrome Mine and the expansion of the Lion Ferrochrome Smelter. Opening the mine last week, Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale, said the mine and the smelter will contribute to towards the job creation drive that the government has committed to forge ahead with, in order to reduce joblessness and poverty among the people. Mathale stressed that, “the opening of this mine could not have come at the right time than when we are all out mobilising the business community to take the frontline position in actualising our resolve to create job opportunities for our people.” The construction of the smelter is expected to be completed in 2013 and will create 1000 permanent jobs and a further 1 800 during the construction phase. The expansion of the chrome smelter is the biggest in the world and will produce 360,000 tonnes of chrome per annum. Meanwhile the Magareng mine will create 600 jobs once it is in full scale operation. During the opening of the mine Xstrata Alloys’ Chief Executive, Peet Nienaber, said more than 2 200 indirect jobs will be created through the procurement of services and products from local suppliers. Xstrata committed to procuring 80 percent of its products and services from local suppliers as way of investing in the local economy and the upliftment of the living conditions of the local communities. The expansion of the smelter will utilise Xstrata’s proprietary energy-efficient Premus technology that consumes approximately a third less electricity than other available smelting technologies. Premier Mathale emphasised that the mines must be the main contributors to the course of environmental protection. “It is important that mining operations must not disrupt farming operations by damaging the land, or polluting water, which is a scarce resource in our province. We are also urging
17
the mines to play an active role in greening our province,” the premier said. He called on the mines to work closely with the communities to ensure that the communities also share the wealth created by minerals under their ground.

Meanwhile, Merafe Resources, Xstrata’s joint venture partner at Lion Ferrochrome, is actively encouraging the government to impose restrictions on the export of raw chrome ore from South Africa from this year. Merafe, which posted a R278,7-million return to profit in the year to December 31, shares in 20,5% of the earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation of the Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture, which has a capacity to produce 1,98-million tonnes of ferrochrome a year. Merafe Chief Eexecutive Officer, Stuart Elliot, told Mining Weekly says that chrome is high on the agenda of the government’s 2011 priorities to adopt beneficiation as a strategy in order to ensure that South Africa reaps the benefit of its mineral endowment. Three million tons of unbeneficiated raw chrome ore left South Africa for China in 2010. “We continue to lobby DMR as well as Treasury to restrict chrome ore that is exported without being beneficiated,” Elliot says. “As long as everyone comes to the party, and they are not severely prejudiced, we believe that we can find a solution that is amicable to everyone,” Elliot says. The three million tons a raw chrome ore that was exported from South Africa last year is sufficient to produce a million tons of ferrochrome. “The most important aspect is that if we continue to export ore, South African ferrochrome producers are going to come under pressure from a cost point of view and we’re going to lose jobs,” is Merafe’s view, linking beneficiation and job creation. “You can’t look at them in isolation,” Elliot says.

The Limpopo’s National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is planning to work tirelessly in getting youth to be ready for the coming local government elections. This follows the low recent voters’ registration number which the NYDA believes can be improved. The independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reports that 53.7 percent of young people aged 20 - 29 in the country have registered to vote in the next coming Local Government elections, and that this year elections has seen an increase of 6 percent of voting stations in the country. The NYDA, together with the IEC and the Department of Home Affairs will host the youth ID Yourself and Youth Election campaign from 02 March 2011 to 22 April 2011.

Getting less worth for your money A clever way manufacturers are cutting costs is by reducing the size or content of their product with a few grams or milliliters, but keeping the price the same. An example of this includes All Gold Tomato Sauce that used to be 750g and is now only 700g. Cadbury slabs containing more expensive ingredients such as nuts have been shrunk to 90g from 100g. A tin of condensed milk used to weigh 397g, but these days are only available in 385g. The list of products goes on to include products such as Lux soap and even Coca-Cola cans. This way of saving from the manufacturers’ side is sometimes making life difficult for those preparing recipes. Many fudge recipes requires a 397g tin of condensed milk. Do you now have to buy two tins or take the risk of adding less of the key ingredient to the recipe? The same goes for cakes requiring 200g of whole nut chocolate. Do you now buy a 180g slab and a 90g (which will make your cake much more expensive)? The trend to shrink the packaging is however not local, it is happening all over the world. An article printed in the renowned US consumer publication, Consumer Reports tackled this issue. The writer comments: “No one likes a price hike, but what riles readers are the ways manufacturers hide their handiwork: indenting the bottom of containers (a favourite trick among peanut butter processors), making plastic wraps thinner, or whipping ice cream so that you pay for air instead of ingredients”. Canadian Consumer watchdog, Edgar Dworsky has been quoted saying: “It’s a sneaky way to pass on a price increase to consumers because the product package is either identical to what it was before or virtually identical, so the consumers think they’re buying the same product, but they’re not. You’re getting less...and if you’re paying the same price and you’re getting less, that’s a bit of a rip-off”. We asked readers how they experienced this phenomenon and if they would have preferred a slight increase in price to a slight decrease in product?
Ms Saena Maroga and Ms Maria Motau said: “They must reduce the price when they reduce the content. They must advertise that the product is now a new size otherwise they are stealing from us”.
Regs: Me. Jeantelle en mnr. Gerhard Fourie sê: “Hulle moet die grootte dieselfde hou en eerder dat ons bietjie meer betaal. Ons het dit al met Simba Chips agtergekom”. By hulle is Solaine.
Me.
Ms Dikeledi Tebele said: “I’ve found they do that and I feel cheated. Food is too expensive to just get less”.
Ms Bonni McKinley said: “We have no choice. We are forced to accept what they give us. Rather keep it the same size with a small increase when needed. I don’t like change, I just feel cheated”. With her is Lily-Rose. Ms Francinah Maseta said: “They must keep it the same and I’ll pay a normal increase. I don’t like the changes”. With her is Blessing. Ms Angelina Ndebele said: “They are cheating us. We are paying and will rather pay more but not get less. I have found that when I get home I don’t have enough of something for a recipe because of this”.
Mnr. Regs: Me.
Mr Satiel Serite said: “The price must be lower because the contents are not there. It is no good. Full amount or grams otherwise they rob the consumer”. Right: Ms Dineo Mathibeli said: “I think it is fine. I’ll buy more for recipes with specific amounts”.

Clash at Moroke Maatlopo United and Tubatse United eventually met again on Saturday last week. The game started slowly with the first goal only scored in the 60th minute. Thapelo Moropane from Maatlopo United netted this goal. Ten minutes later Abel Mashabela increased the score with a beautiful header. Trevor Mohlala sealed the victory by netting a goal after collecting a good pass from Abel in the 80th minute. The final score was 3-0 in favour of Maatlopo United. Maatlopo United is still one point behind Tubatse United on the log. The Man of the Match was Abel Mashabela for his overall good play. “We are happy to collect these much needed points from the log leaders, especially at this crucial time on the log. This was a message to Tubatse United that going to provincial play-offs is not as easy as eating pap and vleis,” said Mr. Jimmy Makola, the team’s spokeman. The game was poorly supported as most soccer enthusiasts were watching the Chiefs and Pirates game on television. This week Maatlopo United will play against Mooihoek Real Touch at Driekop.
