Police Constable wounded in hail of bullets ‘...two rifle wielding suspects jumped out, spraying the police vehicle with bullets’ A 26-year old police constable was wounded in the head during an attack on the vehicle he and his colleagues were traveling in on 30 April 2018. The Constable and other members of the SAPS responded to a complaint at a local mine at approximately 21:20. The responding officers were from the Sekhukhune SAPS based in Schoonoord. As they approached the speed hump as Masha village in Ngwaabe a Toyota Etios came speeding from behind and overtook them. The SAPS members turned on their vehicle’s blue lights and wanted to stop the speeding car. The suspect Etios suddenly stopped and two rifle wielding suspects jumped out, spraying the police vehicle with bullets, concentrating on the crew inside. Miraculously only the one member sustained injuries. He was taken to hospital an is currently in a satisfactory condition.

The suspects are believed to be part of a group terrorising the Burgersfort, Jane Furse and Groblersdal area. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba condemned the attack. A police statement said: “The police van was damaged during the hail of bullets when the suspects fired shots in a precision that was clearly aimed at eliminating the occupants”. The police have opened two counts of Attempted Murder and Malicious Damage to Property. A manhunt for the suspects has been launched and anyone with information is requested to contact Captain Richard Boshomane on 079 894 5501 or call the toll free number 086 001 0111 or contact your nearest police station. Burgersfort SAPS makes dagga bust The Burgersfort SAPS held various road blocks during and just before the long weekend. During an operation on 26 April at Motsepula on the R37 they arrested two

men asged 34 and 37 for dealing in dagga. The dagga was confiscated and the men will appear in court. * Another success story for the SAPS is the conviction of Lindiwe Michelle Nkambule (26). She tried to open an account with a fraudulent bank statement at a local furniture store. The wide awake sales person noticed and alerted the SAPS. Nkambule was arrested and appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud. She was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 3 years on condition she does not commit the same offence again. She was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. She paid an admission of guilt fine of R1000.

What do you think of Cyril Ramaphosa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has had a few months to settle in as President of the country. People are starting to look back at his first months at the helm. He promised and delivered engagement with communities about the mining charter, addressing corruption and state capture as well as increased debate about land expropriation without compensation. He visited the UK during the Commonwealth Heads of State meeting and met up with British Prime Minister, Theresa May. The two had a fruitful meeting regarding the business environment in South Africa. “They agreed to £50m (R857 milion) new UK funding across the next four years to help South Africa improve its business environment to make it more attractive to investors including in the UK, and ultimately lift some of the poorest people in South Africa out of poverty by creating jobs and opportunities. The funding will be used to help identify and dismantle barriers to trade within Africa and beyond, creating a wealth of opportunities for UK business over the coming years,” read a statement from 10 Downing Street, after the meeting. This time has also been marked with closures of roads due to protest action coupled with large scale burning and looting of trucks and shops. Ramaphosa returned early from his visit to Britain to meet with ANC leaders in Mahikeng in North West. This decision came after violent protests shut down all business and services within the town. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think of Cyril Ramaphosa as President and why they say so.

Mr Trevor Mpahlele said: “Cyril Ramaphosa? It is too early to really tell. I cannot complain about him so far. We’ll see as time goes on”.

Mr Daniel Kgotle said: “Ramaphosa is too soft! He must pull his socks up. The crime is now worse than before. The burning and looting of trucks and shops is worse than before. He is really too soft”.

Ms Nella Kockling said: “Ramaphosa is doing well. Since he became president the markets picked up. Unemployment has also decreased. It gives me hope for the future”.

Mr Solomon Mafologela said: “He is better than Jacob Zuma. There has been many changes, like the many companies now coming to invest in South Africa”.

Mr and Mrs. Mhlongo said: “Cyril Ramaphosa is better than Jacob Zuma. There are less strikes now. He listens to the people and follows up. He went to the Commonwealth meeting and got some investments and this will create job opportunities”.

Mr Simon Makgoga said: “Cyril Ramaphosa is so far looking better than what we’ve had the past 8 years. On Worker’s Day he said that people should have a good attitude. Everyone has a right to protest, but do it in a good way. He is a motivated person and he has convinced investors like Britain to come to us with assistance”. With him is Napogadi.

Mr Douglas Magabane said: “The guy is fine. Unfortunately there are people causing corruption and mayhem. Those are Zuma’s agents who wants to make Ramaphosa look bad. In the next cabinet reshuffle Ramaphosa will get rid of the pro-Zuma cadres”.

Left: Ms Gape Mphahlele and Ms Desire Mosamedi said: “He made some changes, but it is too early to really tell. We see some positive things in the future”

performance as President so far?

Mr Rexon Mailola said: “Cyril Ramaphosa is better than Jacob Zuma. Ramaphosa is not tolerating corruption and he is not involved in corruption. That is good”.

Mnr Alfred Masinga sê: “Hy is goed tot nou toe. Ons sal na ‘n jaar sien hoe gaan dit.” Left: Mr Patrick Mokwena and Mr Ali Mafatle said: “So far so good. Everything now seems to be going well with him as President”.

Left: Mr Khakhathi Matshay and Mr Kelly Chavalala said: “Cyril Ramaphosa is better than Jacob Zuma. Our economy is almost stabilized. He is someone who is trusted. His background in business is helping to attract investors. We’ll wait and see for the future as it is still very early”.

Bishop P.S. Malepe said: “It is too early to tell, but he has tried to bring stability. There are strikes going on, but he responded to them. The problem is that there are still criminals within the party he needs to get rid of”. With him are Letaba and Faith.

Mr Donald Bigman Netshifhethe said: “There is not much difference between Cyril Ramaphosa and Zuma. He said everything will be better, but now food and everything’s prices is going up. This thing about the land expropriation – the black people don’t think it is land for farming. They think it is land for squatter camps. There is not much difference since he became president. There are also too many strikes with burning and looting all over the country”.

Mr Danty Selahle said: “He just have to put things into practice. He was Deputy President, so he just carries on. He is making a positive impact. For him there is no early days when it comes to performance. He hit the ground running”.

Mr Peter Njoroge said: “He is doing better than Zuma. He improved the economy and it is giving me hope for the future”. Left: Mr Marvin Shai said: “Cyril Ramaphosa is better than Zuma. There is less strikes since he became president”.
