Gazette Drought starts to bite in Sekhukhune
The drought situation caused by lack of rains in Sekhukhune has seriously affected parts of the 746 villages constituting the district municipality, resulting into them being declared Water Disaster Areas. This follows the recent in-depth assessment made by the District Municipality following a series of reports that the Vergelegeen Dam supplying Jane Furse and its surrounding areas, Nkadimeng Dam supplying Mphanama and the surrounding villages and Piet Gouws Dam supplying Ga-Masemola village and its neighbors are silting (drying up). The district municipality says this water shortage is so serious that even towns like Burgersfort, Steelpoort and Ohrigstad, which had enjoyed a fair share of potable, clean running water for years, are faced with water restrictions today. District municipality spokesperson, Mr Willy Mosoma told the newspaper “Residents of Burgersfort Town In Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality are urged to use water sparingly. This is as a result of the Spekboom which is drying up currently due to shortage of rain. And the backup boreholes used to augment the dam is also producing limited water. This does not mean that we have reached critical times, we are saying that with a lack of rain we might face critical water shortages in the near future. That is why it is important for residents to preserve the little water that is currently available. Our supply to Burgersfort Town is mainly from the Spekboom, boreholes and 2 mega liters per day from the Mooihoek scheme. As precautionary measures, we urge residents to avoid watering lawns, using pipes to wash cars, to name but a few.” Mr Mosoma said during the recent Water Summit held recently at Loskop Dam, delegates the 300 delegates representing municipalities, mining, agriculture, water forums, university experts, water boards, water users associations sharply raised the problem of severe water shaortages, drying up boreholes and dams. “It is indeed true that majority of our water sources in the district are running dry and that poses a serious challenge to us as the water service provider and to all our people. We are working together with the Department of Water and Sanitation and the Presidency to find a permanent solution to this challenge” he said. Executive Mayor Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila say: “What makes our problems worse is that even our flagship projects like De Hoop Dam is unable to meet its desired results because the Malekana Water Treatment Plant does not have enough electricity supply capacity to push water up to Jane Furse. The Moutse Bulk Water Supply project has since been interrupted before completion. We are working very hard with other government spheres to solve all these problems so that our people can receive water.” Ramaila also highlighted some of the important facts that were agreed upon during the Water Summit, which, if considered carefully, can produce better results for Sekhukhune and it’s people. These issues are: • • •
Mokutung village next to Echo Caves is currently one of the villages experiencing major water problems. ‘Local headman, Mr Emmanuel Mopane (right in the photograph) says “it takes more than 30 minutes of brisk pumping this hand pump before a thin stream of water becomes available. All the houses on this side of the village as well as the school are dependent on this pump. (Platinum Gazette contacted the District Municipality about the issue. They assuered us they are giving urgent attention to the problem).-

Illegal connections mushrooming in the district must be eradicated; Revenue must be collected at all villages which are receiving water full time; The Flag Boshielo Scheme in Ephraim Mogale must Municipality be completed to ad dress the water challenge; The Municipal Infrastructure Grant formula be reviewed to address backlogs; The standardization of pit toilets to a maximum 2 meter above ground level to prevent pollution of ground water, be effected; Rain water harvesting strategies be developed; to name but a few.
Mr Mosoma said it is therefore against this background that the people of Sekhukhune are urged to use water sparingly.

Live love The NG Church Burgersfort recently held an outreach in towards the community, practically going out into the world to bring the message of God’s love and saving grace. The church is a beacon on the hill in the middle of town and on Sunday 14 September they divided into groups for an outreach project. Some of the congregation headed up the hill towards the cross behind the municipality to blow the shofars, some headed to Dilokong Hospital to visit the sick children and patients there and deliver a message of hope. The women of the church made special dolls that was given to the children with a message that each of us are different, but also very special to God. A group headed to the Tubatse Crossing Mall to deliver messages of hope to those working in the shops. Cold drinks were handed to drivers of taxis and other vehicles with a message of God’s love. A group stayed at the church to pray for the area and those heading out. The children went to the Morone Shopping Centre where they interacted with customers. while carrying boards with messages about God’s love. (Photographs: Burgersfort NG Kerk).

leaders and chiefs. The Kutullo Core Community Business Forum is a registered non-profit organisation and it was formed by 30 different company directors and seven private companies. “The business people of Kutullo experience a lot of challenges such as unknown people attacking our mines and demanding tenders by force,” they said in a statement this week. The Kutullo Core Community Business Forum’s main mission is to assist with job creation, resolving of protests and help with development. “We commit ourselves to on a daily basis to work to resolve the concerns that exist and implement solutions where possible. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV) 17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
Tough economy shapes local entrepreneurs Roy Mabowa (26), Kgaugelo Sibulele (25) and Kgotsiso Makola (20) are just some of the local youth trying to make a living in an honest way. Their story is not unique, but
rather reflects the perseverance shown by many to survive and provide for themselves and their families with limited means. The trio sells peanuts and cold drinks from an ice box to passing trucks and cars at the speed humps at Kutullo Village. The village is on the R555 just past Steel Bridge. “There are no jobs and we need to earn an income. So we wake up at about 04:00 in the morning and then we cook the peanuts before coming to the speed humps later in the morning to sell it,” they explain. On a good day they could each make about R100 from the peanuts, but overheads still need to be deducted. The three are selling their products most days of the week. The speed limit is 60km/h in the area, but especially trucks do not keep to the law. During the interview a truck sped past as if the speed humps did not exist, prompting these informal traders to quickly jump aside to safety. Intermittendly vehicles will pull over and then they run to quickly do business. All of them wish for job opportunities and is still applying for jobs, but has also found themselves part of a generation where securing a stable job is not an easy thing. “Do a nice article about our business,” is the greeting as the newspaper drives off. Next time when you pass through the area, support the local traders and make a difference.
