Like what?

Guess. It is slow, on the wrong side of the road, not very effective, not much money, overall dismall progress with little performance in a world that demands much more. This living social commentary, even art (friendly drivers and passengers et al), was noticed in Burgersfort on Wednesday this week. They were on their way to Manoke village after a bout of shopping ... Does it remind you of (deep breath), government, perhaps?

Make road safety a priority in the province Nineteen people died while others sustained serious injuries on separate accidentsin the province over the past weekend. This has prompted the MEC for Department of Transport, Safety, Security and liaison Ms Mapula Mokaba to express her concern about the increasing number of deaths as a result of the road crashes on our roads. She is backing the call of the Sekhukhune District Mayor, Cllr. Mogobo David Magabe. Cllr. Magabe recently cautioned motorists in the district to follow the law and make safety on the roads a priority. These accidents occured near Mokgopong and at Malamulele. Speeding is suspected to

be one of the possible causes of many accidents in the province. As these accidents creates a grim picture on the roads of the province, MEC MokabaPhukwana called on all road users to obey all the rules of the road, exercise patience, refrain from driving at high speed as well as drinking and driving. She urged law enforcement officers to show no mercy to traffic law violators.“We cannot continue to bury people on our roads as a result of traffic law violators. We will also strengthen our road safety campaign. “Government welcomes partnerships that will assist in encouraging good behavior on the roads”. Mokaba said.

Crime prevention patrol turns into something bigger Mrs Semaname Ellah Makhubedu (61) did not expect her world to change on Wednesday 27 August 2014. It however turned into a day of hope when Const. Ando Maake and Const. Sello Shai heard about her while they were doing regular crime prevention patrols in Leboeng. The police officers were visiting elderly people in the area to create awareness about safety and to warn them not become victims of crime on pension payout day. Some of the elders told the constables about Ms Makhubedu who is staying alone. She had a daily struggle for survival and often hand no food. The police officers visited Mrs. Makhubedu and during their visit realised that she qualifies for an old age grant. Mrs Makhubedu cannot read or write and never realised that she can apply for the grant. With the help of the local SASSA officials and the SAPS Mrs Makhubedu is now registered and her life

Will a sugar tax reduce Thousands of South Africans are struggling with obesity and new research recommends that the South African government implement a 20% sugar tax on specifically sugar sweetened beverages. “It’s the responsibility of the government to protect the health of its population. One way of doing so is through nudging people to make healthier and more sustainable choices,” said researcher Mercy Manyema, lead author of the study done by the University of Witwatersrand. If government choose to implement such a tax it will not be the first country in the world to do so. Mexico implemented a sugar tax in January this year and by the end of February Coca-Cola reported a 5% drop in sales in that country. Countries introducing a tax on specifically sugared drinks have all experienced strong opposition from the companies producing the drinks. It is said that South Africans consume between 12 and 24 teaspoons of sugar a day and about a third of this comes from sugar sweetened beverages. One such a drink typically contains about eight teaspoons of sugar. “The cost of obesity and the complications caused by obesity-related diseases have a very serious financial impact on the family, caregivers and breadwinners,” study coauthor Karen Hofman said. Statistics show that the proportion of overweight women in South Africa increased from 58.7% in 1980 to 69.3% last year. The figure for men increased from 36.1% to 38.8%. Obesity can increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. The study estimates that if a sugar tax of 20% is introduced for specifically sugar containing beverages, the energy intake of people usually consuming the drinks could drop with 36 kilojoules per day. This may result in up to 220 000 obese adults losing weight by simply cutting on the beverages they previously consumed. The Beverage Association of South Africa responded to the study by saying that a “discriminatory” tax was not an “effective measure because evidence shows consumers switch to different alternatives of the same or similar foods instead”. Platinum Gazette asked readers whether they think such a tax will assist in reducing obesity.

Mr Sulaiman Piri said: “SA is getting fat – look at our women! It will help the people to lose weight if they do this. Government will also get more money that they can spend on health care. Our clinics are very poor, if you go there to get help and medicine they almost never have medicine. Perhaps that tax money can buy us some medicine for the clinics”.

Regs: Me.

Mr Winners Makofane said: “It will limit people in their purchases. If they know why it is being taxed they will perhaps also stay away from those products. I think it may just work a little bit”.

Mr Philemon Twala said: “People will stop drinking cold drinks if it is more expensive. I won’t buy it. It will help people to lose weight”.

Ms Dimakatso Mosoma and Mr Silas Mampuru said: “No, it’s not going to work, besides we are not fat. We are Africans! There should be more adverts for healthy diets and exercise. Go for overall healthy ways”.

Mr Musa Magagula said: “Losing weight is a commitment from inside the obese person. I don’t believe forcing something like this will have a positive effect. Educate people to live a healthy lifestyle”.

Mnr.

Mr Collen Mohlo and Mr Kgaogelo Mpheti said: “It will work to implement a sugar tax. The shops must also be restricted to only sell brown sugar that is much healthier than white sugar. We won’t buy cold drinks if they put such a tax into practice”.

Mr SP Malatjie said: “It can work. No, I won’t buy it if it is more expensive. People will lose weight because of something like this”.

Mr Wilson Notyesi said: “I don’t think it will work to bring in a sugar tax. If the people want it, they’ll buy it. Here where we live it is too hot. Even I buy cold drinks every day and I won’t stop”.

Mr Emmanuel Komane and Mr Kgopane Mahlokwane said: “It won’t work. People will just buy it because they like the stuff. People have a habit of buying cold drinks. Our government will be totally unfair to try and prevent people from buying a product produced for our consumption. They must rather come with plan B to fight obesity. They must get people to exercise and check their diets. Yes, we can buy 20 cold drinks, but still control our own intake. They must rather avail facilities for people to safely exercise. There are plenty of people who would like to gym but they live off a grant and cannot afford it”.

Mr Thabo Mokwena said: “Very few people will stop drinking cold drinks. If it goes to R30 for a 2 litre people will perhaps stop because they won’t be able to afford it. It is not the sugar making the people fat – I eat sugar and I am slim”.

Mnr.

Above: Mr Sarfraz Mohammed and Mr Arslan Umer said: “People will still buy it, even if it is expensive”.

Mr Rufus Moela said: “They must do something useful. It will not help to tax the cold drinks. It is not the sugar that is the problem. We lack minerals like calcium. It is our lifestyles that are the problem. As long as people earn money they’ll buy cold drinks”.

As jy brandewyn koop moet jy Coke koop. Solank die een daar is, sal die ander ook gekoop word”.

Mr Jackson Tjatji said: “It will work. People who don’t work won’t be able to afford it. They will be saved from diseases like diabetes. Let’s support government in this if they decide to implement it”.

‘More than a test drive’ General Motors South Africa is currently doing the rounds in the country, inviting prospective and existing clients as well as the media to fun days where they give all those who attend a chance to test drive vehicles in the company’s South African model line-up. Platinum Gazette attended such an event last week Thursday in Mbombela (Nelspruit) where attendees got the chance to take the cars of their choice from Opel and Chevrolet for a spin around the stadium, while instructors and other officials were at hand to answer their questions and to assist them with driving technique where necessary. The whole group also visited Alkmaar outside the city, where the Izuzu bakkies and Chevrolet Trailblazers where put through their 4 x 4 paces under the careful instruction of Isuzu Off-road Academy instructors. At the end of the day guests were treated to a spectacular stunt riding performance by Brendan Capper on his motorbike before everybody received a “More than a test drive” goodie bag for the road back home.

Nobody, but nobody was allowed to drive this left hand drive Camaro (aka the official drool of the day) muscle car. This local guest was not shy to model and show her delight in just looking at the thing ...

Opel Adam. Coming to our shores next year, has a neat party trick. It seeks a gap itself and then do the difficult parking thing by itself. You must get it out of the gap again. Called Advanced Park Assist. A real “Ag, moeder ma!” little car.

Right: Some of the cars on offer to drive. Limited space on the Opel OPCs though ...

Left shows the Opel Mokka. Sub compact SUV that will land in South Africa next year. At the bottom you have the Isuzu KB 300 Midnite. Lots of black in and out. A special edition with limited quantities (500), available from the end of September. This year.

This is very difficult.” And it proved easy for many a novice on the 4 x 4 track at Alkmaar when they took the Isuzus and Trailblazers for a short drive. Adept instructors from the Isuzu Off-road Academy at Gerotek carefully guided drivers through each obstacle and bigger than big smiles could be seen after the event. Drivers not only learned more about the abilities of the vehicles they may whish to buy, but also more of themselves and to make more use of a better seating position, common sense and ther technology on offer.
