Twickenham Mine’s ‘Arrive Alive’ road safety campaign makes an impact before Easter

T

wickenham Mine hosted their annual Easter Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipal (FTM) Traffic Department on 29 March 2018. Traffic on the R37 was directed by the traffic officers to go through spot checks for outstanding fines, valid vehicle licenses and the roadworthiness of vehicles. “People are traveling to go to church and many of them make use of taxis. That is why we are not even considering to give a warning to these drivers if we find that things like their tyres are not in a good condition,” said FTM traffic chief, Victor Lekwadu. Drivers of vehicles with tyres not measuring up to the lawful requirements were issued fines on the spot. The traffic officers came prepared with a computer system on which drivers’ ID numbers were checked for any outstanding fines and warrants of arrests. Anyone caught with outstanding fines or warrants of arrest against their names had the opportunity to pay either spot fines or were taken to the Mecklenburg police station where they were held in custody until the fines were paid in full. A zero tolerance approach was taken to ensure maximum road safety on the R37 during the very busy Easter season. Employees of Twickenham Mine and members of the Community Emergency Prepared-

ness Response Plan participated in the campaign. While the traffic officers made sure drivers and their vehicles are complying to the law, the Twickenham employees and Community Emergency Preparedness Response Plan members distributed water to drivers and wished them a safe journey. They also reminded them to take regular breaks, keep to the rules of the road and arrive alive. “We appreciate the FTM traffic department joining us on our While traffic officers took care of the official side of the Easter Road Safety Campaign, the Twickenham employees annual road safety compaigns. and Emergency Preparedness Response Plan team made sure that drivers took road safety serious, wished them a Road safety is everyone’s reHappy Easter and gave away some water to keep them refreshed. sponsibility and taking hands with the authorities to try and make the roads safer has been a long running priority for Twickenham Mine,” said Mr Ramaupi Makgoo, the mine’s Communication’s Officer. He also expressed his appreciation towards the community members forming part of the Community Emergency Preparedness Response Plan team who always take a keen interest in ensuring safety within the community and the roads passing through. Five arrested Five men have been arrested for the violent murders of six Modikwa Platinum Mine workers outside Driekop, in Limpopo. Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said two of the men had been arrested on Tuesday evening, and three more on Wednesday. “The high-level investigation team that was established to track down these killers, spent two sleepless nights since the incident was reported and nabbed the five at different locations. The men are aged between 21 and 30. Six mineworkers died, and 28 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in was set alight on Monday evening. Mojapelo said at the time that two people, who had pretended to be mineworkers, had got onto the bus before setting it alight. The perpetrators then fled. He said the six workers were burnt beyond recognition. The bus driver and the other 28 workers escaped through windows. National Union of Mineworkers north-east regional secretary Phillip Mankge said 39 workers had been travelling on the bus. The men are expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday (yesterday). They face of six counts of murder, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property. Meanwhile, the process of identifying the six deceased has already commenced and an appropriate pronouncement will be made in due course. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended members of this team for the sterling detective work and the speed in which they managed to crack this gruesome case. Police investigations are still continuing and more arrests cannot be ruled out.

NTLHATLOLE Science & Commercial College Easter road traffic was a nightmare everywhere, but in Burgersfort everyone decided to come to town on Tuesday. This made for major congestion into town during the day and massive delays out, late afternoon. For the most, people however obeyed the rules of the road to ease the pain of being stuck in traffic.

The old joke that in South Africa we used to drive on the left of the road, but now we drive on what is left of the road, rings very true when it comes to the road connecting the R555 and the R37 past Lapeng Guest Lodge. The extremely damaged road surface makes safe driving difficult for espe-

cially small vehicles while a huge amount of trucks using this road is not improving the situation. Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) has committed to have this road repaired, but to date no formal construction fixing the situation has started.
