Living up to its reputation for horrendous traffic conditions during peak times, Burgersfort’s central business area was a nightmare to drive in last week Wednesday, just after the Easter weekend. Unbelievable, but true, adept motorists managed to fit in five vehicles abreast in the two lanes stretching from the Twin City shopping centre to the Morone shopping centre. To make things worse, somebody decided that one of the busiest days on the traffic calender was ideally suited for some road works at the Burgersfort Toyota crossing (bottom photograph). A number of prospective shoppers did not have the stomach for Burgersfort and carried straight on to Lydenburg, especially for banking (we met them there), and guess what, one of the banks temporarily moved staff to Burgersfort to cope with the volume of business. Ouch!

Aquarius Platinum to aquire Booysendal South rights from Northam for R1.2 billion Aquarius Platinum has announced that the company has entered into a binding Sale of Rights Agreement with Northam Platinum and its subsidiaries to acquire the platinum group metals (“PGM”) and associated base metals mineral rights on farms adjacent to Aquarius’s Everest Mine on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Aquarius Group companies will pay the sum of R1.2 billion at transaction close (approximately US$179 million) to the Northam Group subject to certain conditions. The acquisition cost will be funded both from Aquarius’ existing cash resources and from future cashflow generated by operations. The mineral rights acquired comprise several farms underlain by both the UG2 and Merensky reef horizons, collectively called “Booysendal South” and contain approximately 31.1 million ounces of PGM (4E) resources (comprising 1.9 million ounces of measured, 7.5 million ounces of indicated and 21.7 million ounces of inferred PGM (4E) resources) after geological losses and will increase Aquarius’ current resource base by approximately 24%. with Aquarius’ Everest Mine, and as a result Aquarius is uniquely placed to access this reef horizon in the short to medium term from the existing Everest infrastructure. Adding Booysendal South to the Everest mine plan has the potential to extend the life of the Everest Mine from some 8 years to in excess of 30 plus years, while also potentially enabling Aquarius to raise mining volumes at Everest to make use of both current excess and potential expansion capacity at the Everest processing plant. Accessing the Booysendal South ore body from the existing Everest infrastructure will also significantly reduce the environmental impact of mining the properties relative to any greenfield project plan sited on the properties. Commenting on the acquisition, Stuart Murray, CEO of Aquarius, inter alia said “This acquisition is important for Aquarius, as it enables us to significantly extend the mine life and potentially expand the production of one of our important assets. Everest is our mine that empowerment built utilising the proceeds of our 2003 Black Economic Empowerment transaction with the Savannah Consortium and it is gratifying to see this particular asset potentially transformed by this deal.”

Tubatse Ferrochrome talks to stakeholders Tubatse Ferrochrome recently held a feedback meeting with stakeholders regarding their environmental issues. The purpose of the meeting was to update and give new information on the Remediation Strategy Process, new developments and to respond to any concerns or questions raised. The Water Treatment Plant is used for the remediation process. Tubatse has abstracted and treated 98% of the required volume of contaminated ground water for
2011 (year to date). The targeted 100% was not met as some of the monitored boreholes have less water than initially anticipated. 641 220 m3 of contaminated water has been abstracted and treated since the project commenced in August 2009. Only 11 370 m3 was abstracted from the Steelpoort River during 2011. This is about 9.3% of the total previously abstracted. The Bio-monitoring report for 2010 indicated that there is no evidence of negative impact on the habitat integrity of the river.
They are continuously monitoring boreholes in the Steelpoort area. The ground water in the Steelpoort area is inherently poor due to the high salinity. Due to this the installation of reverse osmosis filters are recommended for domestic use. Tubatse noted that there was no significant changes observed in the contaminant plume and that they’ve revised their Integrated Water Waste Management Plan according to the newest available information. This document will be submitted to the Department of Water Affairs during
the course of the month. New projects on the table are the closure of the hazardous waste facility. This project has already commenced. Tubatse is also busy with EIAs for a new 70 MVA furnace with 24 MVA energy recovery plant, a 30 MVA waste heat, energy recovery plant at the existing furnaces and the upgrading of their furnaces. EIAs for the new slag site, the capped facility, the upgrade of the sewage plants and the brine dams are also underway.

Joshua Generation on field trips The Gr.2,3 and 4 students visited Tubatse Fire Station in Burgersfort. “On behalf of the staff and students we would like to thank Tubatse Fire Station for the special way in which they treated us, they really made our staff and children feel welcome” said Ms Leigh van der Walt.
These staff members from Joshua Generation attended a Nursery School Course that took place on 16 April 2011. This was lead by Susanne Arendt an Occupational Therapist from Nelspruit to educate the staff in developing fine motor skills with the children.

Burgersfort Photography Club take a bird’s view The Burgersfort Photography Club held their monthly meeting on Monday. The group photographed Birdlife during the last month and excellent photographs were entered. They also did not shy away from the newspaper’s challenge to within a short space of time take photographs of Burgersfort by night. Steelpoort netbal- en rugbyspanne op toer
Mpumalanga netbal afrigter Steelpoort Akademie spog met bekwame sportafrigters. Me. Thea Alberts (regs) is onlangs aangewys as die nuwe afrigter vir die Mpumalanga 0/14 netbalspan. Dit is nie ‘n nuwe werk vir haar nie. Sy is reeds jare lank betrokke by netbal afrigting het het reeds op provinsiale vlak afgerig en spanne ondersteun.

Steelpoort Akademie se netbal- en rugbyspanne het in die paasvakansie getoer. Die rugbyspanne het na Hoedspruit getoer en die 0/11, 0/12 en 0/13 netbalspanne het ‘n toer na TubsNetbal by die Dinokeng bewaringsgebied bygewoon. Jenny van Dyk, die Tuksnetbal Bestuurder en afrigter het die toer waargeneem en is deur huidige en voormalige Protea spelers bygestaan. Die spanne het daarna ook teen Sabie aan ‘n netbal en rugbydag deelgeneem.

Tubatse Chrome Golf Club this week received their brand new John Deere lawnmowers. The one, a 8700 Fairway Mower is specially designed for cutting of the fairways. Previously the fairway grass was cut with a tractor and slasher. This meant that the height could not be adjusted as needed and that instead of cutting, the grass was slashed. The other machine, a John Deere Precision Cut will be used for semi-surround, semirough and T-boxes. The previous machine was about 14 years old and still going strong, while the average operational age for this type of equipment is approximately 6 - 8 years. The Club’s management is very excited about the new mowers. “You will not believe the difference this is going to make to the course. We would like to thank Tubatse Ferrochrome for assisting in buying them. Without their help we would have been still far away from making the purchase” said Johan Swanepoel. The machines cost more that half a million rand and the Club have been raising funds over the past few years for this specifically. They’ve been able to pay over R70 000 towards this and thanked all their members and other players who supported their fund raising efforts. They are inviting all golfers in the area to come and experience the newly precision cut course. On Saturday it will be the Ohrigstad Laerskool Golf Day. By the time of going to press the field was just about fully booked.
Shattered dreams Sarie Venter from Letabo Perr riding school competed in the Nottinghill show last weekend. She brought home two rosettes for show jumping. She received a 1st and 3rd place on her new horse Forest Fire. She is rider that must be watched as great things are anticipated for this perfect team of horse and rider.
On Monday this week the re-play of the game between Maatlopo United and Sekhukhune Arsenal took place at Moroke’s Ntwampe Stadium. Maatlopo United lost the game 2-0. Initially rain disrupted the game on 23 April. At that time the hosts were leading 3-1. “It is part of the game and we cannot control the rain. It was a great advantage to the visitors,” said Maatlopo spokesman, Jimmy Makola.
On Saturday 7 May, Maatlopo will host Nchabeleng Young Stars at Moroke. On Sunday 8 May they will play an away game againgst Tubatse Gunners at Longtill. It will also be the end of the 2010/2011 season. “Our changes of representing the Sekhukhune region is too slim now due to our draw with Young Chiefs and our loss to Arsenal,” Makola added.
