The Limpopo Department of Education is currently in the process of registering leaners for admission in public schools for the next year. Admission will take place from the 16 May to 21 June 2016. The Department are calling on all parents and guardians whose children will be going to school for the first time, or moving to a new school next year to immediately collect registration forms from the schools nearest to their home or work address. These forms must be completed and returned to the said schools as a matter of extreme urgency, particularly in the urban areas because they have a great demand for admission of learners. In order to register your child you must take the following documents with you: Birth certificate or acceptable proof of birth date (do not take a baptismal certificate as proof), Immunization card, Transfer card, and or Last report card. If you are not a South African citizen, you must also take the following documents: Study /work permit, Temporary or permanent Residence Permit from South African Department of Home Affairs, Evidence that you have applied for permission to stay in South Africa. The Department of Education will monitor the admission process very closely to minimize the occurrence of unfair discrimination. The Department calls on all parents to immediately go and register their children for 2017 admission.
Don’t forget
it is time that learners must be registered for the 2017 school year (see top of page). This photograph of learners at Laerskool Atokia at Atok attending a fire fighting demonstration, was sent in by the school.

You can still register for the Local Government Elections
President Jacob Zuma recently announced that South Africa will hold its 4th democratic Local government elections on 3 August 2016. We thank the President for this timeous announcement, which will make it possible for better planning by all stakeholders. As part of the preparations to towards the 2016 local government elections, the President constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Elections. The IMC is tasked with overseeing the smooth running of the elections and ensuring that voters are able to cast their votes in an environment that is both free and fair. To ensure that preparations for the 2016 Local Government Elections are on track, the IMC has been coordinating with stakeholders throughout all the sectors. Unlike with national and provincial elections, the local government elections require that potential voters register in the ward that they reside in. To this effect, government embarked on a communication campaign calling on all eligible voters to register and verify their details on the voters roll. The IEC has stated that the two voter registration weekends in March and April witnessed a total of 1 384 254 new voters added to the Voters’ Roll, with 80 percent of them being under the age of 30. This brought the total number of voters to 26 296 601 million or approximately 77 percent of the eligible voting population. The government urges all citizens who have not registered, to utilise the intervening period until the election date is proclaimed, to visit offices of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in their local municipalities to update their details on the Voters’ Roll (provide addresses) or to register to vote for the 3rd August polls. We encourage voters to check their registration status by SMSing their ID number to 32810, at a cost of R1,00. This will allow you to obtain your registration status, voting station information and ward number.
Want to join the dti on a trade mission to Ghana and Nigeria? The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) invites companies to participate in the Trade and Investment mission to Ghana and Nigeria. The mission will take place on 8-12 August 2016. Companies in the sectors of Agriculture and Agro-processing, Built environment professionals, Automotives and Auto-components, Energy (Oil and Gas), Electro-technical, Infrastructure (rail, road and telecoms) as well as Mining and Capital Equipment are encouraged to apply to the department before 8 June 2016. The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Mzwandile Masina says the objective of this mission to Nigeria in particular is to build on the commitments made during the recent State Visit by President Jacob Zuma in March 2016. “The visit to both countries provides an ideal platform for South African companies who would like to export value added products and services and for companies who are looking for investment opportunities in West Africa region,” he adds. Masina says Ghana and Nigeria are important role players in African economic performance and thus present a long term export potential for South Africa in terms of investments and trade. Bilateral trade between South Africa and Ghana experienced an upward trend between 2011 and 2015, growing from R3.1 billion to R4.6 billion respectively, while bilateral trade between South Africa and Nigeria has experienced steady growth with total trade increasing from a total of R28.4 billion in 2011 to R46.1 billion in 2015. Participating companies will be assisted through the dti’s Export Marketing and Investment Assistance Scheme (EMIA).
