Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality(FGTM) recently held a Deaf Awareness day at ga Phasha Selatole were people with disabilities managed to attend from different villages in the municipality. The Mayor of FGTM, Cllr Johannes Maudu Phokane accompanied by his Executive committee members and Councillors, Traditional Leaders, Home Based carers and community members. The event was also attended by the Limpopo Deaf Federation of South Africa Director, Mrs P Kgamane, Bosele School for the Disabled educator in the Deaf Section, Mrs Makate and OSDP Office of the Premier Limpopo Deputy Director Mr M Mulibana. FGTM disability desk officer Madikologe Magakwe said the municipality is committed in focusing on people with disabilities, which include the deaf. A workshop in teaching people sign language held by the municipality earlier this year, is proof of the importance the municipality gives to the disabled, he said. Limpopo Deaf Federation of South Africa says it will continue to meet with communities in Limpopo just to make people aware of the deaf and sign language, which is recognized as an official language. In Limpopo there are five schools for the deaf in different district municipalities. Mayor Phokane said in the municipality we are fortunate to have a passionate person who is working as a disabled desk officer and he stressed the importance of learning sign language by officials in order to work with everyone, especially the people with disability.

Chamber of Mines and Minister still sorting out bad blood Chamber of Mines CEO, Roger Baxter earlier this week confirmed that Chamber of Mines executives and office bearers decided not to attend the Joburg Indaba banquet at which Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane was the guest speaker. The Chamber says it was not an impetuous decision and not a decision based on personal animosity towards the Minister, but a carefully considered decision based on the current regulatory and judicial situation. The Chamber says in a news release that: “Not only has Minister Zwane unilaterally published a charter whose full implementation would destroy the industry; he also recklessly sought to introduce a moratorium on approving new rights or amending rights. He did so on the basis of his refusal to engage on the issues. His gazetted charter establishes an agency that would administer billions of rands a year appropriated from the industry with no indications of plans for good governance. This comes on top of a very questionable history: He came in as Minister seemingly with the primary task of strong- arming a legitimate rights holder of a major mining asset, conspiring with then Eskom leadership to apparently force the sale of a mine to a well-known family that has systematically robbed SA of public funds. The story has been comprehensively documented by the Public Protector. The Minister has done nothing to explain his role in this. Prior to that, in his previous position as Free State Agriculture MEC, his alleged role in channeling hundreds of millions in state funds to the same family for the establishment of a dairy at taxpayers’ expense has also been comprehensively documented with, again, no attempt at an explanation by him. This pattern of behaviour makes it impossible for the industry to engage with any confidence with him on the industry’s future. We know that a new charter has to be developed. We stand ready to do so with government leaders of integrity and with all other stakeholders. We have been seeking to do this for the past two years without success. Right now, we are focused on legal remedies because it is the only currently available course of action in which we can have confidence. For us to have attended the event would have forced us to engage with the Minister on specific regulatory issues in circumstances that are simply not conducive to any constructive engagement at this stage, other than through the courts. The last time the Chamber shared a platform with the Minister – in Perth, Australia – the outcome was not at all constructive”.

Mobile libraries bring joy and excitement Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) and the Boleng Trust donated mobile libraries to 8 different schools last week. Excitement was in the air as the books and libraries arrived at the different schools. The learners and teacher were all eager to see what their different grades’ libraries contain. The Schools will be able to use the libraries as a supplementary tool for the work being done in the classroom. Most of the learners don’t have access to libraries close by or even to computers for research for school projects. The books within the libraries will assist by giving them added resources to u lize. DCM believes that inves ng in educa on is one of the major ways in which communi es can achieve a be er future for themselves and develop into strong economically ac ve and sustainable beacons.

The mobile libraries are equipped with grade specific books that fit into what is planned in the curriculum of the learners.
