The newly constructed Mapodile Library was officially opened on World Book Day on 23 April. The container in which the library was previously housed has now been replaced by a R2.8 million state of the art building sponsored by Tubatse Chrome. The building does not only have books, but also computers, a conference room and tables to study or just sit and read. The initiative was sparked when the local librarian, Ms RachelLewane and the local library committee approached Samancor for assistance. It was opened by the MEC for Arts, Sports and Culture in Limpopo, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and Samancor CEO, Mr Jürgen Schalamon (photograph right). Samancor Transfor-

The Lab is proud to be the first in Samancor to achieve this status. SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) accreditation gives formal and independent recognition that the Laboratory is competent to carry out specific tasks and conforms to relevant international/national standards. Laboratory accreditation is highly regarded both nationally and internationally as a reliable indicator of technical competence. Many customers prefer suppliers who can provide analysis from an accredited laboratory.

mation man-ager Mr Archie Palane and General Manager of Tubatse Chrome, Mr Desmond McManus were also present. During the official opening the community and learners from the nearby schools were encouraged to make use of the library and to also take care of it. The library now serves as a base where learners can do research for projects and the community can let their imagination run free while reading the many donated books.

Powering up to save Tubatse Chrome hrome has the capacity to produce 420kt of ferrochrome per annum with an energy consumption of 1600 GWh/a. In line with Samancor’s innovative thinking, the company came up with Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency initiatives. This will save energy and preserve the environment. In the production of Chrome from the six submerged arc furnaces at Tubatse, about 996 000Nm3/h fume gas at 550°C is lost to the atmosphere with an equivalent of 42MVA of energy. The energy can be equated to 126 kt of coal used to produce electricity. Tubatse Chrome has come up with an innovative solution by building a power plant which will recover some of the lost heat energy from the furnaces and converting it into electric power. The selected technology also preserves the use

of water. Construction on the power plant is currently in progress and can be seen from the R555 road passing the Tubatse Chrome plant. It is planned that Tubatse Chrome will be able to produce their own clean energy by late next year. The project will enable Tubatse to remain technologically competitive, reduce the Tubatse energy consumption by 18,76%, lay a solid foundation for sustainable development of the business, reduce the carbon footprint by over 200 000tCO 2 per annum and create approximately 30 sustainable employment opportunities. At the start of the project the company said: “We live the dream to make power affordable such that only the rich can afford to buy candles”.

Tubatse Chrome’s PSP team chose to spend their 67 minutes on Mandela Day at Mogoshadi Day care and learning Centre. This care centre was established in 1997 with 37 children. Now the owner and principal, Mrs Glen Malekane, is taking care of 152 children (including four disabled). The PSP team and their manager, Mr Jaco Pieterse, assisted in the school’s vegetable garden and fetched water from the river to fill up the Jojo tank. Tubatse employees had lots of fun with the children and ended the day singing Madiba’s birthday song, eating hotdogs and drinking cool drinks in the sun.

Senior personnel at Tubatse Chrome decided to get to know the communities around Steelpoort where

the company operate better. These personnel could be found in community vegetable garden projects, and in kitchens at schools, assisting in preparing the food of feeding schemes. One was even caught with his cellphone next to his ear, running his office, while in the other hand he had a rake, tending the earth around newly planted cabbage. They also assisted with dishing out the food, used brooms to sweep, interacted with children and gave valuable talks to senior learners about subject choices and careers in the mining industry. “Together we worked as teams in getting to now what it is all about in our local communities. Our eyes were opened, in certain aspects it could be described as life changing” was the comment from one of the ‘community workers’.

Spreading some warmth During the long winter months Tubatse Chrome assisted Friend in Need to distribute warm blankets to vulnerable or orphaned children in the area. Friend in Need also distributed food parcels to needy households through the support they received from Tubatse Chrome.

Tubatse places great value on making a difference in the lives of local communities. In order to uplift communities, one has to start at grass roots level. To this effect, Tubatse Chrome has been sponsoring Kohin Coaches at Maelebe Primary School at Tukakgomo and Kgahlanong Secondary School in GaMapodile Township for the past two years. Both of these schools are supplied with full time youth coaches who help identify and support vulnerable children in Tukakgomo. Speaking to the principals and coaches at the two schools, it is evident that many children in Eerstegeluk are orphaned or without parental support due to AIDS or due to migrant workers who has multiple families in different towns. Joel Nkoana, principal at Maelebe Primary, says “the coaches have an important role to play in addressing social issues that emerge in the households of their school children”. Their coach, Lifi Thlaka, which is also a pastor, motivates and uplifts teaching personnel as well as school children. When problems have been defined, he works with children and their families or caretakers to refer them to social workers or the police when called for. He also uses corporate sponsors and churches where families are in dire need of basic supplies such as food and clothes. Lifi said he was especially happy with the results of the pregnancy awareness day that was held in February. Principal Nkoana says they can measure the success of the program through the fact that they do not have any more drop outs. Children now realise the importance of going to school and building a future for themselves. They are planning a Parent Enlightening workshop on the 14th of April to educate learners and parents on HIV/AIDS. Principal Lawrence Phoku at Kgahlanong Secondary school indicated that teen pregnancies and malnutrition are huge concerns. He said that “the school provides daily meals to the children”, he also added that they are very excited about their newly appointed coach Charmaine Lenyatsa who has already started to make a difference. Charmaine started in January this year, she says her biggest success has been working with children who abuses drugs, and helping them to recover from their addiction.

Anglo American will build 23 000 houses for its South African employees, convert remaining hostel accommodation to singleperson occupancy by 2014 and openly discuss how the migrant labour system can be changed. Outgoing CEO Cynthia Carroll has made this pledge in an address at the Gordon Institute of Business Science earlier this week. On building a better future for South Africa’s problembeset mining sector, she acknowledged the need to discuss with employees, labour unions, host communities and labour sending areas how the migrant labour system can be changed to create more sustainable lives and communities. “The mining industry of the past has left us with a housing legacy of which we cannot be proud. We cannot redress that legacy overnight, but we need to work with determination to achieve good housing conditions for all our employees,” said the Anglo American CEO, who will step down next year after a sixyear term. She also committed the company to redoubling its efforts to achieve zero harm, promote health in the workplace and in the broader community and make mining a positive force in the environment. She renewed Anglo American’s commitment to employment equity and the support of education and skills development in the broader community through support for further education and training colleges. She also also had ‘n message for the government saying “In creating a globally competitive industry, the starting point is the need for policy stability and predictability. Mining companies make huge capital investments for the long term. They simply will not make those investments if there is a fear of arbitrary and unpredictable regulatory change. For policymakers, grappling with difficult problems, there is always a temptation to believe that policy reinvention will find the magic answers that have eluded us in the past. But so often the solution lies in implementing effectively the policies that are already in place, rather than tearing them up to make way for something new. I firmly believe that this is the case in relation to the fundamentals of mining regulation in South Africa. A huge amount of work has been carried out by the government to create the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, to develop and then revise the Mining Charter and to put in place the supporting framework of social and labour plans. We should build on those foundations, not change them”.

Safety is always a priority Xstrata Alloys’ Safety Profile: Susan Visser: Director of Sustainable Development 1. How important are issues of Health and Safety within Xstrata Alloys? Health and safety is integrated into the way we do our business and when a decision must be made between production and safety – safety is a priority. Each of our workers (employees or contractors) are empowered to refuse to conduct an

unsafe task or enter an unsafe environment. They have the right to stop any unsafe practise. Through our occupational health monitoring we ensure the health of our workers and the communities around our operations is not impacted

2. What is Xstrata Alloys ‘s safety record within its operations in the Eastern limb? At Xstrata we do not look at lost time injuries but focus on all injuries (lost time, restricted work and medical treatment) thereby ensuring that we address even the minor injuries and TRIFR Jan – Oct 2012

prevent them from becoming a lost time injury. The total recordable injury frequency rate (TRIFR) based on 1 000 000 hours Above: Susan Visser, Director of Sustainable Development worked is: 4. 3. As a custodian of Health and Safety within Xstrata Alloys, what are your fundamental responsibilities? As the Director Sustainable Development my responsibility is to ensure the HO SD department provides a service to all operations through guidance and support on Health, Safety, Environmental, Community, legal, operational risk management, SD systems and assurance programmes based on our 17 Standards. I also

represent Xstrata on Vanitec and the International Chrome Development Association (ICDA) and chair the ICDA HSE Committee. In addition to this it is my responsibility to ensure that all Alloys products exported to Europe are registered under REACH and complies with their legislation.

Through various programmes such as “Meerkat” and “Snakes for Safety” the focus and responsibility for safety is placed in the hands, hearts and heads of all employees and contractors. 5. In your concerted efforts to promote safety within Xstrata Alloys what are some of the challenges you have experienced, and how have you addressed those challenges? Xstrata Alloys is a devolved organisation and each operation is managed by their respective management teams, therefore the implementation of standardised minimum requirements and assurance programmes were not easy. This has however changed and through the implementation of these

standards a matured assurance programme exists with total buy-in from all operations. In 2002 the TRIFR for Xstrata Alloys was 33.91 compared to todays 4.58. The use of our “Bulldogs” (Safety Compliance Managers) enhances the implementation of 8. What qualification does one needs to become a Safety Officer or Manager? standards and ensures compliance. 6. The Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, dictates that the employer should continuously conduct medical surveillance on employees to ensure or verify their medical fitness to execute their duties, how often do you conduct these surveillances, and what has been the trend in terms of the outcomes? At Alloys all workers must go through a pre-employment medical prior to appointment. A Health risk assessments exists for each operations whereby individuals are allocated into homogeneous exposure groups (HEG) for each of these groups the exposure and monitoring requirements are determined. Monitoring is scheduled

based on the exposure and includes specific monitoring at specific intervals. These monitoring requirements vary from monthly, quarterly to annually. When an individual leaves Xstrata an exit medical is conducted. An Occupational Hygienist is used to monitor the work environment. 9. The mining industry is quite a labour intensive environment, what is your general overview with regards to the attention and commitment which is given to issues of safety within the overall mining sector? Most mining companies takes safety very serious, this is also enforced through regular inspections by the Department of Mineral Resources and the issue of Section 54 and 55’s. 10.

Mines mechanise certain work to remove human beings from dangerous works areas, it is however very important to strike a fine balance between mechanisation and providing employment.

With festive season upon us, what is your safety message to Xstrata Alloys employees as they would be travelling to different holiday destinations?

The festive season is the time to be with family and friends it is the time we really miss the ones that are no longer with us. It is however also the time when most mining

companies experience an increase in fatal accidents. My message to each one of our employees and contractors is:

“BE VIGILANT, LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW EMPLOYEES AS THE BEST GIFT THIS FESTIVE SEASON WILL BE THAT YOU ARE THERE TO SHARE IT WITH YOUR LOVED ONES! SAFETY IS LIKE BREATHING, WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU STOP!!

Women’s Day celebrated with fun Tubatse Chrome’s female employees celebrated Women’s Day with heaps of fun in the sun.

Enterprise Development Open Day held Tubatse Chrome held an enterprise development open day in Steelpoort. The open day was held in cooperation with government agencies such as the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) and large businesses such as commercial banks. Lots of literature was available to participants at the open day and Tubatse Chrome explained Samancor’s stance towards enterprise development. One of the main objectives of enterprise development according to

the company, is to create sustainable business enterprises that achieve growth in order to create jobs and to grow the economy. The Company explained that enterprise development encompasses microfinance, entrepreneurship development, investment and growth in small, medium and micro enterprises. The company explained that enterprise development initiatives range from providing equity for small start-up businesses through providing skills development through mentoring and expansion and loans for existing businesses. The company also explained the differences between enterprise development, preferential procurement and corporate social investment, which is aimed towards communities.

The women were treated to various ‘Survivor’ games which not only gave them a chance to get to know each other better, but also build team spirit. The games and dancing forced them to think creatively and find out of the box solutions for problems. After all the fun and games, they were treated to a delicious braai at Tubatse Chrome Club.
