Rain brings relief
Tel Fax
It is seldom that newspapers get the opportunity to splash good news in their communities. Most of the times it is crime, corruption, looting, strikes and violence that grab headlines first. Luckily this week’s headline is that Burgersfort and environs had some good rain this week, in some spots more than 40 mm. The bad news is that the rain was not enough to make a significant difference on the drought at this stage. The flow of rivers also did not increase significantly, so for now the dangerously high consentration of sewerage in the Spekboom is here to stay, while dam levels also remain critically low. This week De Hoop Dam was 79.8 percent full, Flag Boehielo was 76.2 percent full and Tonteldoos Dam was 55 percent full. The Blyderivierpoort Dam was 43.4 percent full, Buffelskloof Dam was 36.1 percent full, Kwena dam was 41.6 percent full and Ohrigstad Dam was 7.5 percent full in comparison to last year’s 49.6 percent. (The photograph was taken after the rain this week by Platinum Gazette’s Beánnla Celliers in Burgersfort with her iPhone.)

NSFAS receives over 400 000 applications for 2019
Shortcut:
Severe congestion and non- existent traffic control in Burgersfort at month-end seems never to bother some road users in town. They just carve out their own route in the urban jungle.
Higher Education and Training Minister Naledi Pandor says the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has received more than 400 000 funding applications for the 2019 financial year. Pandor said this when she briefed the media in Cape Town on Tuesday. The briefing comes after applications for funding for the 2019 academic year closed on 3 December following a two day extension from the 30 November 2018 deadline. “As we prepare for next year, the 2019 application cycle has proceeded relatively smoothly with more than 400 000 applications received between the opening of applications on the 3rd September and the closing of applications on the 3rd of December,” she said. Pandor said on average, NSFAS received more than 3 200 applications a day over the period from September to December, with the number reaching as high as 30 000 on one of the days. Out of all the applications, 63% were females while males made up 37% of the applications. A total of 34 413 applications were received from social grant beneficiaries. Students who are beneficiaries of the South Africa Social Security Agency automatically qualify in terms of the financial qualification criteria and will be funded if admitted and registered at a TVET college or university. “However, it is a concern that only 24% of the applications are from learners who wish to enroll at TVET colleges, with the balance of 88% being applications for universities,” the Minister said. Pandor said of all the applications, the highest number, 95 523, was received from the KwaZulu-Natal province. The number represents 45% of the total number of learners that wrote their National Senior Certificate in the province, while the lowest number was from the Northern Cape with 2 573 applications. She said the success of the current application process can be attributed to a number of factors – including the revised and easy-to-complete online application system, which allowed applicants to complete an application within five minutes; the simplicity of the on-line and manual form with fewer fields to fill; and the accessibility of NSFAS where applicants have been able to apply at the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) as a result of the scheme’s long-standing partnership with the agency.
I am so thankful to be standing at the end of another tough year and have the opportunity to reflect on what has been! 2018 was a tough and controversial year in many senses, so many deeply rooted issues and emotional debates were brought to the surface. This sometimes led to conflict and division, and sometimes it lead to a place where I start understanding my fellow South African a bit better. People lost their lives and families welcomed new life into their hearts. It is always bitter sweet to reflect, but you can choose
what you focus on. One of our values at Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) is Positive Attitude and I therefore choose to focus on the positive contributions into my life, as well as the people and organisations I am involved with. So, standing back to look at 2018, it is in all humility that I thank God for guiding our mine in sending all employees back home alive! Although we experienced a few injuries, we are very happy that our mine did not lose any employees through a mine fatality. Our industry, though, did not have a good year, and our hearts and prayers go out to each and every person that lost their lives in the mining industry this year, we are not proud of this record and will keep on working very hard to ensure zero harm to all involved with our operation, and industry. Our safety slogan of Zero Harm, Becoming Better will be a heartfelt commitment from our leadership team and the mine as a whole, in 2019. In terms of productivity, we are happy with the 2018 performance and in actual fact broke some production records for the financial year ending 30 June 2018, once again, we do understand that this is grace and hard work and will never boast about it in ourselves. I am proud to say that we still pray at our meetings at the mine to invite God in, and therefore we can see His Hand in our work and keep on believing that He will lead and guide us in His Wisdom. Through living our value of Teamwork, we believe we will continue to manage a sustainable mine, making a positive impact in this area. Let me close in thanking so many people who directly and indirectly influenced us in having a great year, I want to thanks each family member who supported our employees and contracted employees this year, thank you to all the contracting companies and suppliers who supported us this year and off course each and every dedicated DCM employee! With this type
of support and commitment, it is just a pleasure to lead and be part of a strong focussed business. To our holding company, Assore, and all the people involved in supporting our operation, we are truly privileged to be part of a loyal and well established organisation, thank you for the support! I always remind everybody that Jesus is the reason for this season, please go and make a difference in someone’s life this year! Ps 91 says that even though 1000’s will fall on the one side and 10,000’s on the other, with our God we will jump over a wall and face the enemy! Let us be fearless in loving others, be humble in serving others, be the ones to support the “Moses” on our side when the battle gets too hard, let South Africa shine again because of the light of Jesus that is shining in our hearts! Let our relationship with God be caught and not taught, may my life be the Bible those around me can read at any time. Christmas is time for sharing, loving, praying and giving Him your biggest present, your life and your time to go and love someone who the world has forgotten. In this Christmas time, be blessed and more importantly, be a blessing …!

This week, Sekhukhune District Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr. Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila opened the 2018-2019 First Quarter Performance Lekgotla. The event was held at within the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality. During the Lekgotla problems, challenges and highlights are discussed. It also sets the tone for areas that need improvement in the coming quarters of the financial year.

Damaged fire hydrants a safety risk A fire hydrant seems to be one of those things that nobody cares about until they need it. In many suburbs of Burgersfort and areas that are being developed as industrial parks or sites, the fire hydrants are damaged and nothing is being done to get them repaired. Whether the damage occurred by accident or through the hands of vandals is unknown. It is however a fact if it remains like this, something might get burned and help will not be coming from the hydrants.
seem to continuously have trucks parked to prevent a view of the oncoming traffic at the stop sign. They also don’t mind simply taking up a full lane of the street and traffic officals seem to turn a blind eye to this. A situation that is just waiting to end in an accident as traffic pressure increases over the festive season.

In the fast lane A R20 million infrastructure investment to assist the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) with the repair and rebuilding of the Eerstegeluk road was officially handed over in March this year. The road was in utter disrepair and a stretch of 5.5km funded by Tubatse Ferrochrome was completed in November last year. This project created approximately 35 jobs. During the hand over of the project, Mr Desmond McManus, Samancor COO said: “The road is a token of the fact that Samancor believes in giving back to the communities - in a sustainable manner and with projects such as these that improve the life of our community members”.
Donations that make a difference
During the course of the year Tubatse Ferrochrome assisted the Eerstegeluk Clinic who was in need of baby cots. Winter was also made a little warmer with a donation of blankets to the elderly people of Tukakgomo, Stoking, Mapodile, Maganagobushwa, Magaseng, Ga-Phasha and Mahlwakwena communities. Mr Marvin Radingwane from Ga-Mampuru was assisted with a donation of new batteries for his wheelchair and Mr Sammy Mabilo from Maganagobushwa was in dire need of a new wheelchair.
