Travellers between Burgersfort and Ohrigstad found on Wednesday morning that the R555 route between the two towns was closed because of a railway accident at the railway cross about 15 kilometres from Ohrigstad. A truck transporting diesel fuel was hit by a freight train coming from Steelpoort. During the accident the cabin of the truck was separated from the back of the vehicle. Traffic made temporary use of the service road next to the railway line to travel between the towns or took the long ways via Lydenburg and Kgautswane. After a few hours the road was opened when the locomotives were seperated from the rest of the wagons.

Fire Fighting gets major boost Sekhukhune District Municipality received a number of new fire fighting vehicles last week Friday. Executive Mayor, Cllr Stan Ramaila, delivered the keynote address in Groblersdal at the Fire Station and tied in the new vehicles with Heritage Month, saying “We should explore naming some of these vehicles after our liberation heroes and heroines as a way of honouring them. As a starter one of our big fire fighting trucks can be named after Flag Boshielo, to symbolise his bravery and selflessness. One of the rapid intervention vehicles can be named after George Squirrel Mashigoane for an example, to symbolise his courage and agility. The point I am driving home is that we do not have to erect monuments to celebrate and remember our heroes and heroines. Because if we wait for big budgets to start such projects, we will fail as we don’t have enough resources. We should therefore use naming and renaming of places and assets to honour our liberation heroes and heroines. In that way, we will be contributing in the liberation heritage project in our small but significant manner”. 12 fire fighting vehicles were handed over by Amasondo Fleet Management, namely 4 Rapid Intervention Vehicles that will mainly deal with extinguishing motor vehicles fires and 8 Grass Tender Units to address the issue of grass and veld fires. Mayor Ramaila said “We are well aware that our fire fighting personnel are working under very difficult and dangerous environment as a results they become prone to stress and trauma. It is our duty to ensure that we give them full support in terms of working tools, counseling and other trauma therapy support. More than anything, I am interested in the life of a firefighter, I want to know their daily challenges and processes. I want to put myself in their shoes and imagine what they go through when attending very risky and at some cases fatal incidences”. Cllr Ramaila said benefits such as fire fighting and disaster management services within reach of most residents of the District Municipality represent a major milestone in terms of the service delivery agenda, adding “We are mindful that a lot still needs to be done in terms of ensuring that this fire fighting service is fully capacitated and operates to its maximum potential”. He said local government should be people centred and responsive. “We were very clear that our people are not just mere recipients of services but rather partners in development. Even today we need that kind of a compact, partnership between people, civil society, business, labour and government” he said. He added “A well-managed and motivated human resource with technical requisites and skill is what we need. We can buy as many vehicles and equipment but if we don’t have motivated and skilled personnel, then our efforts will not bear results. It is incumbent on management to ensure that our fire fighting personnel will be equal to the task in terms of ensuring that they fully utilise these tools of service delivery to benefit our people. We must ensure that our monitoring tools are effective so that these vehicles are not abused. We must ensure that at all material times we know the location of our vehicles and what they are being used for. We call upon our Magoshi, members of the media and civil society to help us monitor these vehicles and ensure that they are used for their sole purpose of service delivery.

Tired of waiting The community of Kampong Section in Driekop are tired of waiting for a bridge. On 18 September 2016 they pitched in and worked to try and construct a bridge. According to them they have tried several times to speak to the local Ward Councillor to help but their efforts were in vain. During the rainy season children don’t attend school due to the stream overflowing and

parents are unable to go to work. Culverts were delivered to the village four years ago without being installed at the specific problem area. The residents claim that instead a bridge was constructed at Mogoleng Section in Driekop where their Councillor is residing. (Photograph and information submitted by residents).

Above the law? In Burgersfort traffic officers try their best to have eyes on problem areas. One of the problems they can however not really do anything about is cattle crossing the roads. The animal on the photograph right, walked straight before traffic ready to drive after given the green traffic light signal. At the same crossing vehicles take chances turning right in front of oncoming traffic long after their green arrow signal has disappeared. Often they also try and cut in on the sides of the vehicle in front of them. This cash in transit vehicle was caught cutting over lanes to cross long after it was still safe to do so.

Ngululu donates wheelchair Ngululu Bulk Carriers in Steelpoort changed the lives of Khomotso Lebayane and her family when they donated a wheelchair to her. Mr Makua Marathon took her plight to the radio for a good samaritan to hear. The plea did not go unnoticed and Ngululu agreed to donate the much needed piece of equipment.

NUUS

Raising the legal drinking age to 21 South Africa is set to become one of only 13 countries in the world to impose a legal drinking limit of 21. This is after Trade Minister Rob Davies this week announced a draft of new amendments to the Liquor Act. He also announced changes to the Gambling Act. Alcohol abuse is one of South Africa’s biggest social problems. Together the cost of alcohol-related health care, crime and social welfare, treatment, road traffic accidents and the prevention thereof adds up to an enormous R37,9 thousand million (billion) per year. South Africans are also rated to be way above the average amount of alcohol consumption per year. Research shows that the average South African consumes between 10 and 12,4 litres of pure alcohol per year compared to the average worldwide of 6,2 litres. Changes to the law will make the manufacturers and suppliers of alcohol to unlicensed retailers liable for accidents that lead to death or injury caused by the alcohol sold by them. The Minister emphasized that alcohol manufacturers need to take responsibility to ensure their products are not sold to illegal suppliers. Some of the changes to the law will include a ban on liquor outlets at petrol service stations, taxi and public transport hubs and even advertising of alcohol will be better regulated. Advertisements will have to include an indication of the harmful effects of alcohol. The Gambling Act changes will give government the right to confiscate the winnings of online gamblers. Online gambling is illegal in South Africa. There will also be restrictions on gambling advertisements and regulations for casinos, pay-out machines and electronic bingo will be strengthened. The National Gambling Board will become a regulatory authority operating within the Department of Trade and Industry with its own Chief Executive. There are no plans to increase the allotted casino licenses per province. Some of the countries currently imposing the legal drinking age at 21 include the United States of America, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Sri Lanka. Those selling alcohol will be responsible to check that the person they are selling the liquor to is legally 21 or older. The Bills will be open for public comment and input until 14 November 2016. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about these proposed changes.

Ms Paulina Maponya and Ms Mathapelo Mathosa said: “It is good. Most of our children consume alcohol from a very young age. They must be strict when enforcing the law. They should implement it before this coming festive season. We’re behind this one”.

Ms Christine Nkareng Boshego and Ms Thelma Boshego said: “Our kids are often busy with drugs and alcohol. At 18 they are too young to drink responsibly. They must be strict with this new law. It can only work if the police do not take bribes while enforcing it”.

Mr Hareton Ngele, Ms Catherine Gouws, Ms Winnie Twala and Ms Sharon Twala said: “It is a good thing, but to enforce it will be difficult. They are not even properly enforcing the 18 years limit. The law enforcement officers are often open for bribes as well. In the homes parents should start to take responsibility for their children and their behaviour”.

Mr Sello Scott said: “They must enforce this. At 21 people are at university and this new law will protect them. Students drink too much. If it is enforced it will help students stay sober”. Left: Mr Difference Shilubana said: “These changes will make a definite difference. Most people at the age of 18 -21 are in college or school and they use money intended for their studies and food to buy alcohol. At 21 you are more mature and many people start working and are able to make critical decisions. If government engage with parents and the youth it will be easy to enforce this”.

Left: Mr Derrick Taba said: “It is fair enough. We have youngsters drinking from a very young age. They should change the rules and properly enforce it. I am all for this one”.

Mr Karabo Nkgabane said: “I agree with government. They can even increase the age limit to 30 years. At 21 you are still in school. From 30 you’ll be able to drink responsibly. Government can enforce it if we all join hands to do it together. You must report your shebeen or bottlestore if they are not obeying the law”.

Me. Hannie du Toit en Me. Annerie du Toit sê: As hulle die ouderdom verhoog sal dit wonderlik wees. Ongelukkig sal dié wat regtig wil drink steeds ‘n plan maak. Dis maar moeilik”.

Ms Katlego Mosehla said: “It will help to reduce accidents because of alcohol consumption. I know of someone who died last week due to an accident caused by alcohol. There must just be no corruption with the enforcement of the law”.

Mr Mmusho Serage said: “I support this 100%. Young kids do things that are not OK. Age 21 is still young. I feel they can make it 25 and older. The young ones cannot drink responsibly”.

Ms LJ Makofane said: “At 18 the children are still at school going age. It is not good for them to go to the pubs. Government must enforce and implement this new age limit. The laws are good, but often the implementation of it not”.
