Slippers!
Learners from Joshua Generation made a difference last week Friday when they participated in the annual Reach for Your Slippers Day. They bought their ‘right’ to wear their slippers to school from a participating outlet in Burgersfort (R10 each) and in doing so made a difference to the plight of children in South Africa with life threatening diseases who are assisted by the Reach for a Dream Organisation. ‘This loss of innocent lives can no longer be tolerated’ Executive Mayor
If they are not at it ....
The Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr Mogobo David Magabe is horrified by the continuing horrific road accidents on the roads. Last week 8 people lost their lives after a mortuary van collided with a minibus taxi between Jane Furse and Mamone village. At the time 11 people who are victims of this accident were fighting for their lives in the new Jane Furse Hospital. Two weeks ago, on 19 July 2014, 8 people lost their lives at Leporogong area situated at theR37 road between Atok and Lebowakgomo. This incidents are just figures taken from the recent list of serious accidents reported across the Sekhukhune District Municipality. “We are perplexed and horrified by this unending number of serious acaccidents reported on our roads daily. We are convinced that one life lost is one too many. We can only appeal to all our law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts in order to spare lives. We equally appeal our people in particular motorist to respect the rules of the road at all times. We are worried that negligent driving has been the cause of all this major incidents” says Executive Mayor M.D Magabe.
‘I’m very much concerned about how risky is becoming daily and daily to drive in Burgersfort roads especially our R37 road which is becoming similar to deadly Moloto road. When I passed the town this week I was welcomed by cows crossing the busy road just near Tubatse Crossing Mall and it came to my attention how this can put the life of the road users in danger. I think the road is too small to cover all the motorists in Tubatse however that’s not the only problem. I urge the motorists to drive safely more especially the taxi men. Arrive Alive is not just a slogan is a lifetime message.” Calvin Selepe (Manoke Village)

“We urge members of the community to exercise restraint during this period of mourning. And we send our sincere condolences to the bereaved families. To the injured persons, we wish them speedy recovery from everywhere they are. The department of Roads working together with Road Accident Fund will ensure that government contribute to the send off of our fallen heroes. As the District Municipality, through our Councillors and CDWs, we will offer systematic assistance to affected families” “Having said that, this loss of innocent lives can no longer be tolerated. Everyone must play their part to ensure that the accidents STOP and they Stop indefinitely” concluded Executive Mayor Magabe.
Stomach flu should be taken seriously
Mike Nartey is your friendly pharmacist at Pharmacy at Spar.
Stomach flu or gastroenteritis is not the same as the flu (influenza) that goes around every winter. The real flu (influenza) affects the respiratory system like your nose, throat and lungs but the stomach flu (gastoenteritis) attacks your intestines. It causes symptoms such as watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, nausea, vomiting, occasional muscle aches or headache and a low-grade fever. Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but in severe cases can persist up to 10 days. You should see a doctor if you are not able to keep fluids down for 24 hours, if you have been vomiting for more than 2 days, if you are vomiting blood, if you notice blood in your bowel movements or become dehydrated. Signs of dehydration include excessive thirst, dry mouth, deep yellow urine or little to no urine and sever weakness, dizziness and lightheadedness. Especially children dehydrate quickly and it is important to keep an eye on them and seek medical help sooner than later. Over the counter medicines to help with hydration and binding the stomach is available. Ask your friendly pharmacist to help you find the right products.

Joy for Sarah and her family 2014 had turned into a year of blessings for Ms Sarah Mmeya of Ga-Madiseng village. In May Platinum Gazette reported about her difficult circumstances when a storm left her and her six children homeless. They were living in the remains of what could be rescued from her old shack after a storm swept it away. Ms Mmeya did not have an identity document and she had lost her job. Neighbours and the community tried to assist. Mr Jeffrey Lesese brought her plight to Platinum Gazette’s attention. Member of the SAPS Media Centre, attached to the SAPS Corporate Communication division in Limpopo read about the family in Platinum Gazette. The article was brought to the attention of LtGen Fannie Masemola who immediately requested the Provincial Head of ORS, Brig Nonhlahla Zulu to try and assist. Brig Zulu approached Modikwa Platinum Mine management for assistance. After a visit to the family the SAPS and Modikwa Platinum Mine joined forces to create a glimmer of hope for
the family. A three roomed fixed and much stronger structure was erected on the family’s stand and assistance with proper toilet will also be given. A fence will be erected around the property. Members of the SAPS jumped in with enthusiasm and contributed money or made donations to the family. This allowed the management of the police to hand over much needed groceries, clothing and shoes. During the hand-over ceremony, Brig Zulu ensured that representatives from Home Affairs, SASSA, the Dept. of Health as well as the municipality were present. They undertook to provide Sarah with assistance to obtain and ID document and birth certificates for the children so that she can apply for social grants for them. The municipality was not let off the hook and they promised to look into the possibility of building the family a proper RDP house. Ms Mmeya could not thank everyone enough for what they’ve given to her family. She was overwhelmed with joy and thanks.

Your opinion about the President Jacob Zuma has directed The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate various issues related to maladministration and alleged corruption in various government departments and entities as well as the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) and the Vhembe District Municipality. The team will amongst other things be looking into allegations of: “Serious maladministration in connection with the affairs of the departments; Improper or unlawful conduct by employees of the departments; Unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property; Unlawful, irregular and unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure or practice having a bearing upon State property; Intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property; Alleged offences related to Chapter 2 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, 2004 (Act. No. 12 of 2004), and unlawful or improper conduct by any person, which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interest of the public”. This week Platinum Gazette asked readers how they feel about the coming probe. Their thoughts about GTM being one of the municipalities to be investigated as well as the outcomes they hope to see from the investigation.
Mr Arabia Mohlala said: “It is good. We have a problem with corruption and people are not doing their jobs properly. Ja, after the investigation things will be better. The guilty ones must be fired!”
Mnr Sello Mopane sê: “Dis regtig, regtig goed. Die mense wat Zuma stuur sal die munisipaliteit uit-sort. Hierdie dorp is vol gaatjies en ons karre kry punctures oppad werk toe. Hulle moet ons paaie regmaak. Die munisipaliteit eet die geld. Ons munisipaliteit is gekies vir die ondersoek omdat hier so baie korrupsie is. Die mense sal bly wees na die investigation. Ons het ‘n mooi munisipaliteit, maar die mense wat daar werk maak nie mooi nie. Lead by example!”
Mr Doctor Masinga said: “It is alright. They must investigate this municipality. We don’t want corruption. They must help people who are poor with the budget and not let it go into corrupt things. This team Zuma is sending will sort things out. You remember in the past they had people sorting out Lebowakgomo? Whole departments were investigated and the corruption was sorted out. The same will happen here”.
Ms Constance Makhubedu and Ms Kgaogelo Hlahla said: “It is a good thing they will be looking into our municipality”. Ms Makhubedu said: “I think things will be better there in the future. They will sort everything out”. Ms Hlahla said: “I am not so sure about that”.
Mr Norman Magabe said: “I welcome the investigation, but the President must also clean his desk. Sure, his team will be able to make a difference here”.
Left: Ms Marinkie Mashabela said: “They must investigate. You see our economy is like it is at the moment because government appoints comrades instead of competent and educated people. If they investigate here, they will find irregularities. Criminal law and justice must be applied. Justice to the people. If this team makes sure the right people gets appointed, things will be better”.
Hier is so baie korrupsie – dis hoekom ons munisipaliteit gekies is vir ‘n ondersoek. Die mense sal sorg dat dinge weer beter gaan. Hulle is bang vir Zuma so hulle sal dinge kom uitsorteer”.
Me.
Right: Mr TE Mabelane said: “Yes, I welcome the investigation because those guys at the municipality are using money in the wrong way. They only want to benefit themselves and their families and they don’t care about the community. I hope it will be better after the investigation”.

SIU’s investigation of GTM
Mr Joseph Malepe said: “There is a lot of corruption. The management is just eating the money while we are suffering. We live in a democracy but we drink water with the animals. It is good President Jacob Zuma is doing this. This team will make a difference”. Ms Eugenia Mathaba said: “It is not going to make a difference if this special unit investigate the municipality. They’ve been trying to root out corruption and it is just not working. The procedures they use are just not working”.
Me.
Mr Lawrence Nemakonde said: “Ja, it can only help. You don’t know, often these people just investigate but nothing happens. You hear of this commission of enquiry and that investigation team, but the corruption often just continue. Perhaps they chose us at random because I’ve seen more corrupt municipalities”.
Mr Sydney Mashego and Ms Irene Lesese said: “It is true that there is a lot of corruption here, but they must not only investigate in Burgersfort, they must look at the whole Limpopo. It is full of corruption. This team has pressure from the top so they will definitely sort things out”.
Mr Dumisa Madalane said: “I welcome the Special Investigation Unit (SIU). They must come and investigate the municipality. What I don’t welcome is the way the Hawks came here and just picked at a few people. The SIU will be fair and investigate everyone. I am not defending corruption and I don’t support corruption. I just want people to be fair. Don’t just single out people. The SIU will work fairly without fear and favour. I don’t support the Hawks who came for just two people”.
Mr Thato Moloto said: “This is a good thing. We’ve got a lot of corruption here at our municipality. This special investigation will help us get service delivery at Tubatse. Here at Tubatse we have big, big corruption, that is why Zuma picked us to be investigated”.
Links: Mnr.
