8 February 2013
Everything wet. A massive shock awaited the educators and learners of Maepa Primary School next to the R555 outside Ohrigstad on Tuesday morning when they arrived to build on their dream of a new generation as envisaged by the community, the school and nearby Hannah Game Lodge, a main sponsor of this dream. Thieves came in the night and basically took everything, even the the school’s gate. Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Nkosi Josias Mahlake, on his way from Leboeng to an Executive Committee meeting in Burgersfort, immediately halted his trip when he saw the problem at Maepa Primary School, postponed his meeting and phoned everybody (from three cellphones, one a cheerful metallic pink one), including the MEC and Disaster Management. Alas, at the time of going to press yesterday morning, the situation at the school has not improved after the large theft, which not only saw all the roofing from one block of classrooms stolen, but also half of the roofing of the new block of classrooms, which was taken into use only weeks ago - see page 2 for more details.

NEWS
All the food are gone
As far as could be determined, the thieves came with a truck, the tracks were left at the scene at Maepa Primary School and very much evident on Tuesday morning. Apart from three quarters of the roofing and the school gate that were stolen, the locks of all the security gates and doors to all classrooms in the older block of classrooms were broken and at one classroom at the the new block, a whole wooden door was stolen. The door to the brand new computer centre was also broken open (photograph lef), but the the good news is that no computer equipment was stolen. The computers were taken to Hannah Game Lodge in earlier weeks because the security situation at the school prompted the principal, Mr Steven Mkhabela to request the game lodge to take the computers for safekeeping. Although Mr Mkhabela submitted requests for improved security at the school, nothing has transpired yet. The little tin shack where feeding scheme meals for learners are prepared, was also raided. It seems from evidence on the scene that the school’s wheelbarrow was used to transport the cooking pots to the thieves’ vehicles, as all the cooking utensils, pots and pans are gone, as well as the wheelbarrow. Worse, almost all the feeding scheme food for February were stolen. “For us it is bad, because for many children, the meal they get at school is their only proper meal of the day. It is also difficult to teach children when they are hungry. Apart from that, is the fact that everything is wet now, including some text books we received from the Department of Education in Limpopo” said Mr Mkhabela. Hannah Game Lodge immediately arranged for the roof of the new block, which was donated by Hannah Game Lodge and other sponsors, to be covered. The older block of classrooms was still open by yesterday morning. Disaster Management maintained that it was the responsibility of the Education department, while in its turn, the department has not responded to the principal’s reports and calls for help by the time of going to press. In the meantime, businesses such as Charity Stores in Burgersfort has started to respond to Maepa Primary School’s plight by donating stuff the school may need at the moment. A meeting was also held with parents about the problems at the school and it was agreed that schooling will recommence today. As far as possible children will bring their own food and the classrooms without roofs will also be used. If it rains, no school for those pupils ...

Looking dam good...
Free rabies vaccination campaign continues This week the Department of Agriculture in Tubatse’s free rabies vaccination campaign kicked off. In the first two days of the campaign approximately 200 cats and dogs were vaccinated. This is significantly less than three years ago when more than 800 animals were vaccinated. The campaign continues until Thursday next week and people with animals are urged to bring their cats and dogs to be vaccinated. This is a free service. Vaccination
De Hoop dam is starting to look more and more like a dam as it is starting to fill up after heavy rains in the catchment area. Impounding is however not taking place and as fast as the water flows through the sluices the dam empties again. According to the Department of Water Affairs a number of legal issues still have to be sorted out before impoundment can commence. An official document in this regard did not reach the newspaper in time before going to press.

8 FEBRUARY 2013
State of the Nation Address 2013: Next week Thursday, Parliament will officially open for 2013 in Cape Town. This opening is usually a glamorous affair and is marked by die State of the Nation Address (SONA) by the President of the country. The event is usually attended by all influencial political figures as well as former Presidents, the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court and members of the judiciary, the Governor of the Reserve Bank as well as Ambassadors and Diplomats of the country. It is the joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. 2008 was the first year since 1994 the SONA took place without former presidents Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk in attendance. The SONA is broadcast live on television and the address is scheduled to start at 19:00. The speech the president delivers is published in all 11 official languages of South Africa on the government communications and Information Service website. In his speech, the president usually gives a report on the status of the nation. This means he will ‘take stock’ of the country’s domestic and foreign situation and chart a common direction that should be taken to achieve the goals of creating a better life for all South Africans. Fashion trends are usually something that is being watched as the guests arrive at Parliament. A whole ceremony preceeds the official speech. This includes mounted police escort, military ceremonial motor escort and the lining of the President’s route to Parliament by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), a red carpet at Parliament, a national salute by the Ceremonial Guard of the SANDF and a military band. Usually there is also a flypast by the South African Air Force and a 21gun salute. The 21-gun salute originates from the 14th century when canon and firearms came into use. In 1842, the 21-gun salute became the international norm for the highest honour a nation rendered. It is fired in honour of the Head of State, the national flag, the Head of State of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family and a former Head of State. Civilians can participate through the Junior Guard of Honour consisting of school students, a Civil Guard of Honour consisting of representatives of civil society organisations and Eminent Persons nominated by Provincial Speakers from all nine provinces. Entertainers usually perform on a stage in the public participation area. We asked readers what they would like to hear President Jacob Zuma say in his State of the Nation Address and whether they will be watching the event unfold.
Ms Tebogo Tebele said: “We’ve lost hope. So he must just not make empty promises next week. It feels like they are saying this and that, but nothing happens. We’ll watch it at home on the TV”. With her are Zodwa and Koketso.
Mr Godfrey Hlongwa said: “The President must say how they will give electricity and water supply to the people. People are suffering. They must give us services that do not fall apart in a few months. I will watch everything on TV”.
Ms Lydia Phala said: “I want the SONA to focus on job creation also salary increases for educators. They work very hard”.
Ms Constance Gwebu said: “He must focus on education and service delivery. Teachers earn very little. They must be paid better. I’ll watch in the evening on TV, but if they start showing things in the afternoon it will be difficult to watch as I knock-off late”.
Me. Ina Burger sê: “Korrupsie in die parlement en staat is ‘n probleem. Ek wil hê hulle moet in 2013 daarvan ontslae raak en aandag aan ons land se paaie gee. Veral LImpopo!” By haar is Bianca.
Mr Frans Mphogo said: “I want the President to talk about how they will give better job creation. I’ll be watching on TV”.
Mr MD Mampa said: “Their priorities for 2013 should be addressing crime and education. Even now, they have not delivered books to every school. Schools also don’t have money to run properly. They must not use education to fight each other and try to get power. If I have time, I’ll watch the SONA at home”.
Mr Justice Mphahlele said: “What I need to hear from the President - what will make me happy, is when he tackles issues of education headon. Problems with books and all the other problems are affecting the children and educators. Education is a nation. They must also fast track the two new universities planned for the country so it will ease admissions next year. It is turning learners to crime if they achieve and go through the process, but cannot go study further. I’ll be watching to understand what is planned and I’ll watch their flashy clothes. You’ll see fashion in movement”.

What you want to hear this year
Ms Marinkie Mathunyane said: “I want President Jacob Zuma to say that they will give good service delivery. I’ll be going to one of the public viewing areas”. Ms Minnie Pholwane said: “I want them to create more jobs. The President must have a plan for this next week. We want more jobs like in the mines. I’ll be watching it with my family”.
Mr Zondi Nkambule said: “I want to hear how they will be fast tracking service delivery and I want them to make education more efficient and accessible for all. They should this year allocate a huge budget for education so they can allocate schools enough funds to run properly. I’d like to go to a public viewing area if I get a chance and is invited. Otherwise I’ll watch on TV”.
Mr Ben Sibindi said: “He must tell the nation they will do away with cadership and will employ only the right people with the right qualifications. They must create permanent employment opportunities. Not contract employment. I will watch the event at home on the TV. At the public viewing areas you don’t focus on what is being said”.
Mr Timothy Maebela said: “Zuma must have a plan to create a good environment for business to grow. I’ll watch on TV”.
State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2013: Date: 14 February 2013 Time: 19:00
Mr Mogale Mafuma said: “I want to hear President Jacob Zuma talk about crime. They should get Bheki Cele back in his position. I’ll be at work, so I won’t watch”.
Mr Leroy Topera said: “I want them to give more attention to education and job creation so young people can get jobs. Even those who did not succeed in school should be able to get jobs. I’ll try and watch on TV”.
Me.

Golfing disappointment at Tubatse Chrome Club A lack of support for the Monthly Mug Competition at Tubatse Chrome Club led to the competition not yielding a result on Saturday last week. Everyone is welcome to come and have a fun day on the course. (Information: Willem Montgomery, Tubatse Chrome Golf Club).
Winterveld Rugby Club is kicking off the new rugby season. All interested rugby enthusiasts are invited to come practise with the Club. They practise on the Winterveld Recreational Club’s rugby field, situated outside Steelpoort on the Polokwane road. This is every Tuesday and Thursday from 18h00 till 19h30. The Winterveld Rugby Club, or Buffels as they are also known, participate in the second League of the Limpopo region, under the wing of the Blue Bull Rugby Union situated in Polokwane. They present courses on various aspects regarding rugby throughout the season to all who are interested, from strapping, coaching right through to new amended club rules. The Buffels had a very mixed emotional season last year. Three of their elite players passed away in vehicle accidents, where another talented player broke his back in a car accident. It was a tough season. A team of rugby players from Eerstegeluk joined us, giving our club a tremendous boost in performance and numbers. To crown it all, for the first time in the club’s history, the lads, above all expectations, make it through to the final in their league. They won their semifinal against Pietersburg Dorp,
but unfortunately lost the final against Noordelikes. “The Buffels ended their season on a very high note, without any major sponsors. The Buffels sustained throughout the season, against all odds. The Buffels performed very well on the field, dispite the fact that we only had two home games last year. The Buffels are back. This is our season to make a statement” said Charl van der Merwe from the Club. He invites players: “Come and join us, just for the fun of exercising or for the glory achieved on the field. For the love of the game”. Contact Charl van der Merwe on 079 690 0858.
