Anglo American spells it out: Fuel cells and platinum - the road ahead The window of opportunity is “wide open” for South Africa to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and simultaneously obtain a source clean zero-emission power, Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll said this week in Durban at the COP 17 Conference. “With platinum at its heart, a fuel cell industry would support South Africa’s drive for jobs,” Carroll said. Anglo American, through JSE-listed Anglo American Platinum, is the world’s largest producer of platinum. Carroll outlined how Anglo American had put an expert body to work in London, which had concluded that hydrogen fuel cells could drive development of a whole new industrial sector in South Africa and provide the country with the opportunity to become a major player in the global green economy. “The country has an opportunity to profoundly influence the climate change debate well beyond COP 17. While much of the talk of climate change is understandably focused on mitigating carbon emissions, we mustn’t ignore the huge opportunities that exist in a low-carbon world,” Carroll added. Addressing a function for the presidency of the United Nations climate change convention’s 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17), Carroll said that the findings of the UK’s Carbon Trust on fuel cells development in South Africa were that: • with the appropriate levels of deployment of investment in manufacturing, insulation and maintenance activities, “hundreds of thousands of new jobs” could be created over the next 30 years;

• fuel cells produced could simultaneously help to meet existing energy security challenges and provide rural communities with energy, without any major expansion to the national electricity grid; and

• there would also be clear potential to export knowledge and products to the global market. Carroll said that South Africa was already funding and directing research into fuel cells as part of its hydrogen strategy and fuel cell demonstration projects were under way around the country, ranging from the powering of vaccine fridges in rural clinics to providing heat and power for hospitals. Anglo American Platinum was itself demonstrating a 150 kW zero-emission fuel cell close to the COP 17 conference venue to highlight the green credentials of platinum, which is on the way to being used in 95% of the world’s new cars to capture noxious gas.Carroll reported that the R100million fund to support users of platinumgroup metals had made its first investment to a US company that was manufacturing and marketing fuel cell systems in South Africa and Sub Saharan Africa. The use of fuel cells to power underground locomotives and miners’ cap lamps was imminent.Hydrogen fuel cells using platinum catalysts were efficient, versatile and scaleable and represented a proven technology that provided clean, reliable and cost-effective power. “I know that the South African government is determined to seize this opportunity,” Carroll said, adding that South Africa could become a global leader in fuel cells.Fuel cells, which used hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity and water and heat, could be used in their stationary format, with the source of the hydrogen from coal-bed methane, which could be used to produce water and electricity. Carroll also pointed out that light emitting diodes (LEDs) used in flat screen television sets, smart phones and laptops used sapphire crystals from iridium crucibles, which was creating additional demand for iridium, a platinum group metal sourced mainly from South Africa.

Facts about intestinal worms

Advertorial

Infection by intestinal parasitic worms is widespread throughout the world, affecting millions of people. Children are particularly susceptible and typically have the largest number of worms, which cause a number of health problems; making them unwell, affecting their physical and mental development, and affecting their attendance and performance at school. The worms Three of the most common kinds of worms that infect children are roundworm, whipworm and hookworm. These worms live in the intestines and their numbers build up through repeated infection. Children may often be infected with more than one kind of worm. What problems do they cause? As numbers of worms build up over time, many of the health problems caused by these worms are chronic and can be long lasting. The worms can cause malnutrition, as they rob the body of food through loss of appetite so the children eat less, or through stopping the food being absorbed properly once it has been eaten. Children with chronic worm infections and large numbers of worms may be stunted and underweight. Heavy infections with roundworm can also cause bowel obstruction. Intestinal worms can also contribute to anaemia, especially hookworm, which causes bleeding in the intestines and loss of blood. The larger the number of worms, the more likely they are to make the children ill, which can also lead to the children missing school, and doing less well when they are at school. Chronic infections can lead to long term retardation of mental and physical development, and in very severe infections, even death. What are the symptoms of intestinal worm infection? The different kinds of worms can cause different symptoms, and children with only a few worms probably won’t notice any symptoms. However, with heavier infections, common symptoms in children with one or more kind or worm may include: Loss of appetite, Distended abdomen, Painful abdomen, Coughing, Fever, Vomiting Diarrhoea, Listlessness and generally feeling unwell How do people become infected with intestinal worms? People become infected with intestinal worms through contact with soil that has been contaminated with human faeces from an infected person. For roundworm and whipworm people can become infected when they ingest the worm eggs, either by eating contaminated food (e.g. fruits or vegetables that have been watered with water containing contaminated soil), or by geophagic activity (ingesting contaminated soil directly). For hookworm, people become infected when the larvae burrow through the skin of bare feet. What are the benefits of treatment? Benefits of treatment to individual children are: generally feeling better, an improved appetite and loss of many of the symptoms of worm infection described above. By having their worm infection treated, children should have improved nutrition, better school attendance, and be able to concentrate better when they are attending school. Treatment of school age children will also benefit the local community, since children not only carry the greatest burdens of worms, but can also be a major source of infection.

Community will get a tar road Smokey Hills Mine on Friday last week launched community projects that will not only be a contribution to the economic upliftment of the community, but also make life easier for everyone traveling on the current gravel road. Phokathaba Platinum(PTY) Ltd under which Smokey Hills is licensed will be taking on the responsibility for the construction of approximately 2.5km of tar road from the circle at Maandagshoek, to the turn-off to the mine. The contractors, BIGEN Africa will start constructing a by-pass before the 15th of December and hopes to complete the new tar road within five months. At the ceremony, Mr Piet Kleynhans on behalf of Smokey Hills Mine told the community and government representatives that they’ve heard the call for a tar road. They also asked the community to be patient during the construction phase. Municipal and community representatives all thanked the Smokey Hills for the road that will be coming. During a ceremonial sod turning ceremony, the mine representatives, government representatives and community representatives dug into the very hard gravel surface with a shovel and pick. It was however with smiles on their faces that they did their bit of hard labour for the day.

A ceremonial sod turning ceremony took place at Crossong Section in Maandagshoek. A section of the gravel road will be tarred over the coming months.

Bringing water to the thirsty Smokey Hills Mine licenced under Phokathaba Platinum (PTY) Ltd has shown their goodwill towards the community that had been suffering without water. The Mahubane Section of the Maandagshoek area now has running water at taps in different sections of the community. The mine first drilled for water to provide the community with borehole water, but the water was not fit for human consumption. Plan B then kicked into

action and the community reservoir is now fed directly from the mine’s supply. This is a temporary measure until the Sekhukhune District Municipality’s water pipeline reaches the community. In the mean time the Mine has appealed to the community to take care of the line. Illegal connections into homes diminish the pressure and then the supply cannot reach all areas of the current pipeline. They’ve also asked that the community not take the taps or pressure

valves from the line. Municipal officials thanked Smokey Hills for taking the initiative to provide the community with water from their own source. The community in turn expressed their appreciation, but also urged government to provide sections not served with the new line with water as soon as possible. The hand-over of the project was celebrated by Mr Piet Kleynhans of Smokey Hills with a drink from the tap!

partial administration this week?

Ms Phindile Nkosi said: “With national government handling things it will be much better. There was a lot of corruption”.

Mr Nicholas Jones and Mr Howard Magopa said: “It is a good thing that they have taken over. People of politics don’t deliver services, they want to enrich themselves. We hope it will be all right now”.

Mr Thulani Cele said: “It is not good for the future. The problem is that we have incompetent people in critical positions. How do you over spend 1.4 billion and then just go to national government for a handout? You have to have competent people like in the private sector. What happens in the private sector if you overspend? You get fired! We should start running government like a business in the private sector. The failure to do so will see us heading for a disaster”.

Mnr Albert Schoeman en me. Chantelle van Heerden sê: “Hulle moet die onbekwames en korruptes uitkry en mense insit wat die job kan doen. Gee geld op die belangrike goed uit”.

Supply Chain Management Unit Ms Patience Mahlake said: “It is good if national government takes control. When provincial run themselves things don’t work out because people tend to look after their relatives even though they don’t have the qualifications.” With her is Fahlogelo.

Ms Thelma Matlala said: “I don’t think it’s going to be better now. They can put whoever they want there, but there is corruption everywhere”.

Compulsory Briefing Session: Old Municipal Building’s Chamber, Burgersfort on the 15 December 2011 at 09H00 EVALUATION AND ADJUDICATION CRITERIA Bids shall be evaluated and adjudicated in accordance with the Greater Tubatse Municipal Supply Chain Management Policy as amended, Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act 5/2000, responsiveness to the bid document (s), and on a 90/10 points system, of which 90 point is for price and10 points for B-BBEE Level Contribution as determined on the B-BBEE Certificate. CLOSING DATE AND OTHER CONDITIONS FOR THE BID 1. Bid documents will be on sale as from the 13 December 2011 at the cashiers’ office, Lower Ground, Greater Tubatse Municipal Civic Centre Building from 08h30 to 15h00 during weekdays till the closing date as stated below.

Mr Frank Napo said: “We’ve heard from the media that there are a lot of unqualified tenders that were given to friends and family of officials. I am a teacher and every school receives what we call ‘Norms and standards fees’ with which you have to run the school. It usually comes in two allocations. The one around May and the other December. We’ve not received anything yet and I’m afraid we will not get it. Where it comes to money national government have to intervene otherwise the civil servants will not get paid”.

Hope in Heels Walk for charity Tubatse Chrome hosted the Hope in Heels Walk for Charity on Wednesday this week. More than 300 entries were received for this good cause. All the money raised with the event will be going towards the fight against the abuse of women and children. Every participant received a medal, umbrella and coolbag. After the walk snacks and cooldrinks were served while the white and pink helium balloons were untied to fly away. The symbolism of the balloons is that people can break free from the circle of abuse and fly high to triumph over bad circumstances. Tubatse Chrome thanked every participant, sponsor and waterpoint participant who helped to make a success of the day. Eastern Plant was the waterpoint winners for the day. This annual event is one not to be missed in 2012! See more photographs on page 10.

Walking for a good cause Tubatse Chrome’s Hope in Heels Walk was well attended on Wednesday this week. Read more about this event and see more pictures on page 9 of this week’s newspaper.

Some participants walked and some ran. Despite a quick thunder storm during the afternoon, the temperature was still 36 degrees when the walk started. This made the waterpoints along the way one of the highlights.

Makua Marathon’s message Makua Marathon or Daniel, one of Tubatse Marathon Club’s oldest members is a well-known motivator in the community. Every year he gives a message of encouragement and well wishes for the Christmas holidays. This year he said: “Road safety is very important this season. People should be vigilant 24 hours a day. Lives are important and you could lose your home, brothers, sisters and spouses if you are reckless. Don’t drink and drive or use your cell phone while driving. Pedestrians should look before they cross the road. People should respect the road signs. A merry Christmas to everyone and happy New Year. May you have a prosperous 2012. Remember to look after your bodies. Run and keep fit”.

2012 Tubatse Chrome will make it happen! On the 9th of November Tubatse Chrome took some time out with their leadership team to have a strategic look at the year behind us and the one to come. Heykie Berg, well known actor who currently performs in Binnelanders and who won Survivor 2011 inspired the team with great words of wisdom. He highlighted that everyone in life should have a clear purpose and that one should take action to make your purpose happen. One should not compare yourself to others and ask why they achieved what they have, but rather ask how you can go about it to achieve your purpose.
