Sekhukhune District Municipality, the most untarred district in Limpopo Province, is about to receive special attention from Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) – the provincial entity responsible for roads infrastructure. This follows an engagement between the Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila, and a delegation of the roads agency led by Board Chairperson, Mr Matome Ralebipi, held at the Thaba Moshate casino and convention centre in Burgersfort on Tuesday, 6 December Also present at the meeting were RAL Chief Executive Officer, Mr Maselaganye Matji, and Cllr Mbuzi Mahlangu, Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for infrastructure. The meeting was organised to foster integrated planning, help improve stakeholder relations, coordinate project management and to share technical expertise. The Municipality and RAL are also seeking synergies with regards to interactions with the mines which are key economic stakeholders in the district, as well as local business. This is the first meeting that RAL has convened with the newly elected political leadership of the Sekhukhune District Municipality, following the August 3 local government elections. The engagements form part of RAL’s continuous consultations with district municipalities in the province aimed at unlocking historic backlogs in the area of roads infrastructure. The district mayor was delighted to have met with the leadership of RAL. He raised, among others, the crucial issue of joint planning when it comes to project implementation, social facilitation aimed at calming community dissatisfaction which hampers service delivery. It is also hoped that through this engagement, RAL will also avail its skilled personnel such as engineers to the municipality to help in terms project design, planning and implementation.
The district municipality has serious challenges when it comes to road safety, having the highest prevalence of illegal speed humps all over its roads. The hope is that with the improvement of the road infrastructure, these illegal speed humps – which pose a serious hazard to motorists – will be a thing of the past.
Matji committed to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between RAL and the Municipality, to be completed by December 13. Once signed, the memorandum will go a long way in improving the quality of lives of the people of Sekhukhune through increased youth employment, contractor development initiatives and skills transfer.

Siyakha brings festive love to community
The Christmas decorations were received with amazement and joy as the Siyakha team assisted in putting up the Christmas trees.
On Thursday last week the Tubatse Siyakha Learning Lab visited the Ebenezer Children’s Home in Bothashoek and the Dilokong Protective Workshop for the Disabled in Moroke. Representatives from the Lab delivered a donation of Christmas decorations to them and assisted them in putting up their Christmas trees. The decor was supposed to be set up in the Learning Lab, but it was decided to spread the festive love in the community and rather donate the decorations. “It was a humbling experience to see the happy smiles on their faces. We have had the pleasure of helping to change lives in 2016 and today we have changed the outlook on what it means to be a part of a bigger picture” the Siyakha representatives said.
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 NIV You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.

Give your input on the National Liquor Amendment Bill The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has extended the deadline for submission of written public comments on the National Liquor Amendment Bill to the 15 December 2016. The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies says the extension was the result of constructive consultative sessions that the department had with the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry and the South African Liquor Brandowners Association. “The department also hosted a National Liquor Indaba in Gauteng last month where it was apparent that affected stakeholders and associations need more time in order to provide valuable inputs on the Bill. We are happy that the extension will afford all of the stakeholders and members of the public at large more time to share their ideas and proposals with us on the Bill,” says Minister Davies. the dti has been hosting consultative sessions for oral public submissions and comments throughout the country since October as part of the national roadshow aimed at soliciting inputs on the Bill from members of the public. Last week the Select Committee on Trade and International Relations unanimously supported Liquor Policy. The Chairperson, Mr Eddie Makue said there was unanimity across all political party lines that indeed the policy is important and will contribute towards responsible drinking. Makue said this will potentially deal with the aspects of safety and security in the broader society. “We need to look at the detrimental impact alcohol has on our society and give consideration to raising the sin tax such that it becomes a deterrent to the abuse of alcohol, especially by young people,” said Makue. The National Liquor Amendment Bill 2016, was published on 30 September 2016, Gazette No. 40319 for broader public consultation where interested parties are required to submit written comments within 30 calendar days from the date of publication. The closing date for the submission of comments was extended to 15 November 2016 and again to 30 November 2016.

Another title for local beauty Limpopo 2016/17 Arrive Alive campaign kicks off Itumeleng Millicent Madiba from Maroga Village (20) was last weekend crowned the Miss Lekolokoto Gardens 2016. She only started competing in beauty pageants when she was 17 and managed to win first princess in various competitions before claiming the title last week. “I would like to thank all my friends, family, colleagues and my parents for the support they gave me. I would like to tell the youth that you must believe in yourself. Believe, trust and have confidence. Respect humanity and follow your dreams. Stay away from alcohol and focus on your books. I would like to wish everyone a happy festive season and happy
The Limpopo Arrive Alive campaign was officially launched on 6 December by Premier of Limpopo Chupu Stanley Mathabatha. The launch took place at Mantsole Weigh bridge station on the N1 near Bela-Bela. The Premier was accompanied by MECs for Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba, LEDET Seaparo Sekoati and Transport and Community Safety Nandi Ndalane. This year’s theme is: “DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE TAKE 5 (FIVE) MINUTES REST, BE HEALTHY STAY SAFE AND EXPLORE LIMPOPO AS A DESTINATION OF CHOICE”. The campaign is part of Limpopo’s drive to encourage all travellers visiting to stay healthy and safe on the road, be alert at all times and explore Limpopo as a destination of choice. Modimolle is one of the hot spots in Limpopo on various crime categories and the focus feel here too when the campaign moved there. The Department of Health conducted health screening on drivers and commuters. Some roads accidents are caused by drivers with diabetic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. EMS personnel were on site to assist motorists who needed medical attention. Motorists are encouraged to do health checks because prevention is better than cure. Take a rest and drink water (especial when experiencing a heat wave). Practice a healthy lifestyle this festive season and beyond. People coming to Limpopo, the province of peace, will be spoilt for choice with a basket full of activities for this festive season. Last year during the festive season there were 1755 deaths on the roads. 208 fatalities occurred in Limpopo. Small motor vehicles accounted for 47.9% of total crashes during this season, followed by light delivery vehicles at 22.7%, minibuses or combis at 10.1% and trucks contributed 4.8%. The majority of people who died were passengers at 38.3%, followed by pedestrians at 34.9%. Drivers contributed 23.9% of the fatalities and cyclists 2.8%. The age group most affected for drivers as well as passengers and pedestrians was between 25 to 39 years accounting for about 47,9% of drivers, passengers 38.5% and pedestrians 34,3% of the fatalities respectively. Weekends continue unabated to pose a major challenge as ably demonstrated by the recent festive season reality. Most crashes occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The highest fatal crashes were recorded on Saturday at a percentage contribution of 22.2% of the total fatal crashes, followed by Friday and Sunday with 18.8% and 16.9% respectively. The Cost of Road Accidents per year is R306 billion which equals R1,5 billion a month which is made up of insurance costs, funeral costs, medical costs etc. Road deaths are one of the 10 biggest killers in the country. More than 14 000 people die on our roads annually. 40% of roads deaths are pedestrians. This season - remain alert and arrive alive!

Children should be strapped into a child seat The AA says only seven percent of South Africa’s drivers put children in car seats - despite the passing in July 2015 of a law requiring all children to be in a child seat. This while less than 60% of South African drivers wear they seatbelts while in a vehicle. “At the time, we welcomed the new law,” (requiring children to be strapped into a child seat) the AA said, “but called on authorities to ensure a wide education and enforcement campaign was launched to ensure infants get the protection the law provides. “What we are seeing now is that too many people are failing to buckle up and protect children in the car.” Earlier in 2016 the AA conducted informal observational research to determine how many children were placed in car seats. “We found that less than seven percent of children in cars were using them. In many instances, children are sitting in the front passenger seat without
seatbelts, standing in the car while it was moving, or at the very least, were not in an age, weight and height-appropriate car seat. “Not only are they disregarding the law, but they are risking their children’s lives. More needs to be done to enforce this law; otherwise its introduction will have been meaningless.” Research shows that a properly fitted child seat will reduce the chance of injuries in a crash, and possibly save a child’s life. “Considering how easy it is to put a child in a car seat, or use a seatbelt, we believe the attitude of some drivers needs urgent attention,” the AA said. Arrive Alive said seatbelts and child restraints were primarily designed to prevent or minimise injury to a vehicle occupant during a crash. The AA and Arrive Alive urged drivers to buckle up, strap in their children and be safe on the roads - not just during the festive season but all year round.

More and more TUPS Clubs on farms Somerhoek TUPS Club, formed by employees of Somerhoek Packhouse in Marble Hall area, received TUPS Sport kit, TUPS Crown and transportation to campaigns. The handover ceremony for these items was held at Somerhoek Sport Field on Friday 2 December 2016. This generous support was made possible by UFF African Agri Investments in collaboration with Somerhoek Boerdery. Coincidentally Somerhoek TUPS Club was established on Mandela Day 2016 where TUPS Sport was invited by AgriAids SA to conduct the activation as part of celebrating 67 minutes of selfless acts of humanity. TUPS Sport joined forces with AgriAids SA after recognising that agriculture sector has
an important role to play in guaranteeing food security. According to the Inventor of TUPS Sport Mr Puleng Mmotla the success in Somerhoek is the beginning of a campaign to build a championship culture on every farm and that the handover of this sporting kit breathes life into the TUPS Sport movement. “When we approached Somerhoek Farm about their employees’ interest in TUPS Sport, they promptly availed a training ground and helped in raising funds for the TUPS Sport kit, TUPS Crown (the equipment for the sporting code) and transportation to campaigns which include Alcohol-free Festive Season Campaign to be held at Napogadi Recreational Park in Marulaneng on 17 December 2016.

Local soccer talent spotted The East Limb Mines’ Community Soccer tournament took place last week Saturday. What made it special was the fact that this tournament saw 9 players being identified by the Pretoria Fairfield Soccer Academy scouters for development and possible life changing opportunities with mayor soccer teams. More players might still be identified through analysis of the video clips taken over the weekend. The chairman of the academy will issue a report after watching the videos taken at the event thoroughly and this report will explain the proceeding for the identified players. Sello Chokoe (Coach of NFD team Black Leopards and X-coach of Baroka FC) joined the event on Sunday and was given the opportunity to talk to the players while assisting with the handing out of the prizes. He exchanged his contacts and asked the organising committee to invite him to any future football development events. Mamelodi Sundowns scouters also called and asked to be invited to the next football development tournament around the area. The day was a big milestone for some of the local players who broke down in tears when they took photographs with the professional football coach.
“Congratulations to all the teams that participated, you have registered your Company in the history or foundation book of this event which has a great chance of becoming a powerful supply event for our professional football teams in the country. Overall, the small event was a big success! I would like to thank all the direct and indirect support that we received especially the direct support from Modikwa Management. I would also like to thank the organising committee for all their hard work and late meetings. We also extend our appreciation to all the companies that managed to send their community teams to the event, realising this opportunity to support and uplift the community talent in football. I think the success and the platform given to the community through this event was worth every cent, time and effort spent and we are looking forward to the next year’s event which will have more scouters from PSL and NFD teams” said Protus Sikhakhane on behalf of the organisers.
