Everybody inked! V

oting in the Greater Tubatse area during Wednesday’s national and provincial elections went without major glitches, except for a few ‘minor’ mishaps, like the cross dressers and re-clads in Dresden around noon. What happened is that when Platinum Gazette arrived at the Dresden voting station just after noon, two groups were seemingly arguing with each other (a good distance away from the voting station’s outer perimeter. Arriving at the scene, the groups descended on the reporters, with the EFF supporters complaining that the ANC tried to steal their voters by giving them new ANC T-shirts, with the yellow clad group vehemently defending their new clothes. No violence or anything, everybody peaceful and cheerful, but with a lot of noise. Driving out of Dresden the newspaper happened upon the dwelling of colourful local political opportunist, Mr Joseph Mohlala (erstwhile of COPE, now ANC) who cheerfully invited the reporters into his house where a number of women was busy cooking for the ANC. We did not have time for a bite, but asked for comment, Mr Mohlala duly explained that his opinion of the incident at the voting station is that the so-called supporters of the EFF were simply re-clad in a more acceptable colour and that he was sure it was not an effort to disrupt anything. Another strange sight the newspaper happened upon was that a fully operational voting station was active at the school amongst the ruins of Segorong. All the people in the village were relocated to Praktiseer (by Rhino Minarals to make way for the expansion of the andalusite mine) since the last elections, but a large group of them did not re-register. The Presiding Officer told the newspaper “it is still early, there is nobody here and transport is an issue you know? Maybe they will still come later”. Our route took us through Fetakgomo Local Municipality where we encountered the only COPE supporters we saw the whole day and Makhudathamaga Local Municipality where the EFF was very active. For the rest it was clear that the ANC was well organised and did everything in its power to get voters to the voting stations. We happened upon Mr Roelof Lourens of the DA just before sunset as we returned to Burgersfort from Leboeng. He was very positive about his party’s performance after a long day on the road. At the time of going to press yesterday (Thursday), detailed results for our area were not yet available.

Locals cast their vote Local residents streamed to the polls on Wednesday. The early indications for the Sekhukhune region was that a high voter turnout was handled well by the IEC staff at the voting

stations. Outside voting stations people queued patiently and supporters for different parties made it clear who they support with flags, T-shirts and many other branded items.

Voting in Steelpoort went well as people streamed in to cast their vote. Left: Some Cope supporters along the route in Fetakgomo District Municipality.

Movements of disappointment and celebratory air punches were in the order of the day.

Tubatse Chrome hosted their annual Procurement Golf Day on Saturday last week. This is one of the highlights on the golfing calendar and is always well attended. This year was no different. Players sweat it out on the course during the day’s heat, seeking refreshment at the newly constructed and donated halfway house, the Wildebeest. The day ended with a special prize giving and late lunch at Tubatse Chrome Club. This was served in style and with mouth-watering dishes the Club is famous for. The day’s winners were Rudi Conrad and Carl Conrad. The longest drive winner was JJ

van der Walt and the player with the ball nearest to the pin was Melany Kroon. (Information: Tubatse Chrome Golf Club).
